Bulgaria
Thank you for taking me on your journey through Bulgaria. It seems like you had a wonderful time there. I remember also from my time there it seemed like a real hidden treasure of the world. I think you should make no apologies for visiting a McDonald's in Sofia. Towards the end of my trips, I do the same, as I begin to crave western food, burgers, chips and pizzas once more! Hope you are enjoying the settling-in again and reminiscing stage back home, which often comes after a great trip ?

Buzludzha Monument

Amazing architecture
This is a part of the world we have yet to explore and would love to do so.

Bulgaria
I loved reading this blog - it's very obvious you had a great trip :) Please, don't get me started on the whole 'tourist' vs 'traveller' thing - it's yet another way people use to draw distinctions of being superior to others. We are all tourists whether they want to admit it or not. We rarely go to chain restaurants, but I quite enjoy an McDonald's visit when overseas to see what's different on their menus! Not to mention that it's always a reliable clean toilet stop :)

Wonderful memories from the monastery and the restaurant, what a day - love your photos, Sylvia :D

Thanks so much, Regina! You and Jon saved the day by braving the flooding rain and thunderstorms to take us all to dinner! Your kindness will be remembered by all of us and will now be legend in VT Euromeet history!!

The end of a great trip
Another excellent read bringing back my own good memories of Bulgaria. It was fun to share much of it with you but a shame you couldn't join us on that last adventure. I so agree with the point you make, 'Some friends wonder why we travel to countries such as Bulgaria, and frankly, I wonder why they don't!' I could of course also say the same about North Korea ;)

The end of a great trip
Sarah, thanks for your visit. I feel a good trip is made even better by being around people you really like. I was glad to share much of this trip to Bulgaria with you too, and our other VT friends. I'm glad you feel the same way I do about sometimes making the choice to visit countries that others would not. Your travel history is something to aspire to. Thanks again for organizing the fun Koprivshtitsa day trip and the Sofia Walking Tour -- I have no doubt the VT meet you're organizing will be excellent in every way. Looking forward to your blog on North Korea too!

Farewell to Bulgaria
Another VT meet and blog over with another year. Sounded like a great trip and a pity I couldn't be there

Farewell to Bulgaria
Thanks for your visit, Malcolm. I'm sorry you couldn't be there for the meet. The planned activities were excellent, but there was also the freedom to explore on your own or with a small group. Of course, in the end it was seeing Bulgaria in a new light that made it special to me. Assume you will be at next year's meet!?!

Bulgarian Treasures
Good to hear. I have a few travel ideas in the pipeline, nothing concrete just yet...

Bulgarian Treasures
Thank you for sharing your blog and wonderful photos on this seemingly little-visited corner of Europe. The fortress and monastery look beautiful, and must have been very interesting to visit.

Bulgarian Treasures
Alex, thanks so much for reading this blog. The Bachkovo Monastery was extraordinary in the richness of its paintings. It's difficult to remember everything we saw here but a few paintings really stood out. Glad we got to visit Bulgaria. Where are you off to next?

Thank you
Thanks for including the link to my blog in your edit Sylvia - much appreciated!

Monastery
The art and architecture looks incredibly beautiful. I would love to experience a night in a monastery in Bulgaria too! Something to definitely keep in mind should we return :)

Monastery
Thanks for your visit, Ren and Andrew! I'd love to return to Bulgaria for another visit, and staying at Bachkovo Monastery would be an interesting experience. Rila Monastery also offers accommodations I believe.

Wonderful photos!
I've enjoyed reliving that day, especially through your photos of the church interiors at the monastery - like you I was overawed at the scale of the decoration and art works! By the way, I have the story of the man with his hands cut off in my own blog entry about the day: https://toonsarah.travellerspoint.com/328/ - 'a pagan kneeling at Mary’s bedside trying to drag her down to Hell, his hands chopped off at the wrist by an angel to prevent him succeeding.' Feel free to copy!!

Wonderful photos!
Sarah, thanks so much for your visit, and for the explanation of the painting! I used to be so much better at remembering details like that! Also, thank you so much for offering the information about the painting from your own blog -- I'll take you up on that!

Get Thee to a Monastery
Another fascinating insight into Bulgarian life Sylvia, and you must have been in picture paradise with all those frescoes, paintings and icons.

Get Thee to a Monastery
Thanks for your visit, Malcolm! I think Sarah agrees with me that seeing the incredible scale (both in number and quality) of the frescoes at Bachkovo is extraordinary. I feel very lucky indeed to have seen this monastery!

Thanks for the memories
Reading this in Beijing and enjoying reliving our adventures in Plovdiv while en route back from North Korea!

Thanks for the memories
That's very much appreciated, Sarah! Look forward to reading about your own adventures in North Korea soon.

Plovdiv
Ah, my visit to Plovdiv, and Bulgaria, was before my Travel Blog days - there is no blog entry on my time there here. I really can only remember staying in a soviet-style block of flats, and I think I liked my visit as there were not many other tourists there (I enjoy going off-the-tourist beaten track). Hence one of the reasons why I now Travel Blog - to help me remember more of my travels...!
