Great write up!
Your detailed account of our journey puts my own effort to shame! It seems though that the train ride made a stronger impression on you than it did me, probably because living in the US you don't get so many chances to travel by train?

"Great write up1"
Thanks, Sarah. You're being too kind! I suspect you're right about this short train trip being more memorable to me than it would be to some others because of the lack of opportunity. This BDZ train was nothing like those in Europe and the USA ("the 20th Century Limited," the "Empire Builder," the "Coast Starlight" to name a few) during the golden years of train travel. But, returning from trips I've particularly enjoyed, I tend to see everything through rose-colored glasses!

Bulgarian Lion Guarding the Grave of the Unknown Soldier

That face!
We fell in love with this lion too :) You were blessed with much better weather than we had on our few days in Sofia. I didn't really connect with the city, so it's nice to read another perspective. Looking forward to your blog on Plovdiv... we loved that city!

RenanDrew, thanks for your visit and nice comment. We really did have excellent weather in Sofia, and sorry you didn't have better weather on your own trip there. For being a large city, I thought Sofia was very pleasant, with friendly people, lots of history and so much to see. We were there for a total of 4 nights over the course of the trip, but to really do Sofia justice, it would have been better to stay at least 2 more days as several of my friends did. I absolutely loved that lion!

 Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral
There is an Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Tallinn, Estonia and this one in Sofia Bulgaria. Who was Alexander Nevsky that he attracted such adoration?

 Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral
Dave, thanks for your visit! Although I did not learn this information while in Sofia, when I did some research after our return I found that Nevsky was a Russian prince (and I believe is considered a saint in the Russian Orthodox Church). Apparently though the cathedral is named for him, it was also built in honor of the soldiers who died in the Russo-Turkish war, and that these battles in the end aided in the liberation of Bulgaria from the Ottoman Empire. We saw similar tributes to a variety of people who aided in the struggle of Bulgaria to free itself from Ottoman rule.

Great memories
Thanks so much Anne Marie! I came home with great memories too. Still chuckling at the story you told me about one particular night in Sofia!!! LOL!

Happy memories!
Wow, you have certainly captured the delights of our stay in Sofia in this write-up! Thank you for the name-check, although on this occasion I did no organising beyond suggesting how we might split into those two groups for the tour, as it didn't need to be pre-booked :)

Happy Memories!

Cabin Fever
The folks who schedule these shows are very clever. If you live in a part of the country that is cold and gray, just when you think cabin ever might be terminal, here comes he travel expo. It in January in NYC, in February in Chicago, in early January it's in Boston - are you seeing a pattern here? Glad you had a great time, and may your bucket list get ever longer.

'Cabin Fever"
You're probably correct from a marketing standpoint, and I guess the people who put on the boat show that same day at the Javits Center also take the same approach. But no matter to me as it certainly brightened up an otherwise cold and boring winter weekend!! I'm now thinking that a bucket couldn't hold all the places I'd love to travel to, LOL!! Thanks for your comment!

'Interesting to compare experiences!'
Sarah, thanks for your visit! Even with the crowds, I think you'd enjoy the NYT Travel Show, as I'm sure I would enjoy the London Destinations Show too. It would have been nice to have complimentary show tickets for sure, but the cost for our tickets was negligible in the scheme of things especially for NYC!

Interesting to compare experiences!
As you know I attended the London Destinations show around the same time, so found it interesting to compare experiences. This one seems even bigger, and with more swag! But on the plus side (for me) I can get into Destinations for free as tour companies offer tickets to anyone who has previously booked with them. Love the sound of your hotel too - if we plan a return trip to NYC I will check it out for sure.

A wonderful day out!
Great photos and memories of our lovely day out, although I didn't realise at the time that you had such a problem with the minibus, although I admit it was a little cramped. I hope it didn't spoil the day for you? And that we can find a bigger one in Bulgaria!

A wonderful day out!
Thanks for your visit, Sarah. Although I thought the Snaefellsness Peninsula tour was the best in terms of sights, I thought the transportation was the absolute worst. We were relegated to sitting in the back the entire day; I am short and yet the seating was extremely cramped for me; the shock absorbers seemed to be non-existent and every time the minivan hit bad road conditions we were jostled to the point it was almost intolerable. I actually said something to the driver/guide about how bad it was and could he please take it easy in such cases, but he was curt and moreorless gave a "get over it" reply. By the end of the day we had really had enough! So hoping for better in Bulgaria.

Just stunning!
So glad the weather changed so you could capture these stunning photos. And I really liked the photo from the carbonated spring water stop too... so arty I wasn't sure what I was looking at, but such rich colours :)

Thanks so much for the nice comments -- I really appreciate the feedback. I'm so glad you liked the Okelda carbonated spring photo!! I'd love to visit northern Iceland now as the scenery there is just incredible.
