Gorgeous city
Reading your blog brought such great memories flooding back :) But I also vividly remember my poor tired feet from all the cobblestones and hills. The version of the Milyo story we heard was slightly risqué, and apparently his hand 'in his pocket' has other connotations... :/ I loved Plovdiv a lot and could easily go back :)

Plovdiv
Thank you for taking me on an in-depth exploration of Plovdiv. I visited myself a few years ago, but only seen to remember staying in an atmospheric communist block of flats at a very interesting home-stay. It seems there is much more to the city beyond this!

Plovdiv
Hi Alex, thanks for having a look at my Plovdiv blog and your nice comment. I enjoyed our short time in Plovdiv and could have easily stayed for another day or two since essentially we really only had one full day there and that spent in the Old Town and Kapana. Although we used Plovdiv as a base while visiting Koprivshtitsa and Bachkovo Monastery, etc. I will try to look for your Plovdiv blog, but am curious what you thought of this city.

Thanks, Anne Marie!!! It was a great Euromeet and great to share it with people like you!

Hotel Ego
How coincidental that we stayed at the same hotel in Plovdiv!?!? Did you try the little garden restaurant directly across from the hotel? It was rather lovely. Your photos of Koprivshtitsa remind me very much of our time in Bansko. Looking forward to your thoughts on Plovdiv, and reading about the Meetup - I'm curious as I've never been to one :)

Hotel Ego
Thanks for your visit RENandDrew! Wow, that is a coincidence that you were also at Hotel Ego! I personally didn't try the cafe across from the hotel, but my husband did when stayed in Plovdiv while I visited Koprivshtitsa with the others. Though it was a bustling town, I enjoyed the Old Town and Kapana sections of Plovdiv. People seemed friendly and happy!

Wonderful Memories!
Thanks so much, Josephine! It really was a pleasure to be able to see some of Bulgaria with you! You are the sweetest!!

Thanks
Thank you for such a great write-up of our day out. It was a shame we had to skip the Thracian tombs. Many of us had the chance to visit one on the Monday tour but unfortunately you had to leave before then :( And thank you too for your diplomatic approach to the discussion of the controversial mural. It wouldn't be seen as such by most of us in Europe but I appreciate that in the US opinion would be more divided, and I'm sorry it upset you to see it Sx

Arts and Sciences
Another informative post Sylvia - and I do like good wall art. As for the artist who portrayed his/her subject in an offensive way, I think they're being small-minded and counter-productive to their work

Arts and Sciences
Thanks for your kind comment as always, Malcolm. There's a time and place for everything, but I thought this was a poor choice of both to bash another country.

San Antonio
I often wondered what San Antonio was like and now I have a pretty good idea. Mind you I never realised that the Alamo was in the middle of a built-up area. I don't know why I should have thought that mind you. Another excellent blog Sylvia and I'll be following your tour around Texas with interest.

San Antonio
Thanks for your visit and nice comments, Malcolm. I guess it is kind of surprising to find the Alamo in the middle of what is now the old town center of San Antonio versus being in a wide open area as it used to be. But in a way, it also makes sense because the Alamo began life as a Spanish mission with all the activity, commerce, etc., that would go along with it. And, in the years after it was built and after the Battle of the Alamo, as the population expanded, the town of San Antonio grew up around it. It's quite something to see and imagine how it used to be.

Ah that makes sense!
Thanks for clarifying Sylvia, it all makes sense now! Yes, you have definitely helped to put Texas on our ever-growing wish-list :)

Tempted by Texas!
We've never really considered Texas when planning road trips in the US but it seems we should, as San Antonio sounds a wonderful place to visit! I especially like the look of the missions, and the Alamo would be fascinating to visit. It seems unlikely though that it used to take a day to ride 3 miles on horseback when you can walk it in an hour or less! Did you maybe mean to write 30 miles?

Tempted by Texas
Thanks for your visit, Sarah. We really enjoyed what we saw of Texas, and I would hope that if you ever visit, you would too! As for the distance between Spanish Missions, I believe it is true that Calfornia's Missions were spaced about 30 miles apart (a day's ride). For the San Antonio Spanish Missions, you are right that I was incorrect. They were definitely not 30 miles apart (I think it really was roughly 3 miles apart for most of them). A park ranger told me that the spacing between San Antonio Missions was such that the native population of the time could support that many missions with shorter distances between them; and perhaps most important, the soldiers stationed at the Presidio near the Alamo had to be able to reach the mission farthest away (Mission Espada) probably in a day's time. Sorry about that.

It is so lovely to read your travel-blog, dear Sylvia, and see Bulgaria through your eyes. I missed so much of Bulgaria and it is wonderful seeing your beautiful photos :) <3

Regina, you are always so kind! We truly missed you when you were not able to be with us! I hope you enjoyed the places you were able to see and the dinners we had together. I have at least one photo together with you from Plovdiv that I think is really special. It was a wonderful trip, and Rick & I hope to see you and Jon again at a future Euromeet!!

Wonderful memories .
What a wonderful read Syl , I loved our holiday and a place I would gladly go back to . It’s brought it all back . I can still see the fields of roses and the wonderful aroma and fields of poppies . It was a picturesque village lots of lovely houses full of history . Thank you for bringing it all back to life Josie xx

Wonderful memories!
Thanks for your visit to my blog, Josie! It really was a great trip, and I would definitely like a return visit to Bulgaria. But it wouldn't be the same if I didn't have friends like you there to share it with!

More happy memories!
Memory was great, wasn't it? I had exactly the same trout dish as you and Rick, and it was definitely the best thing I ate in Bulgaria, even though I had many other tasty dishes :) I think our tour delay was down to Nadia picking up Teresa at her hotel - I don't think she allowed enough time for that so wasn't at the Ego when the driver arrived. But she was otherwise very good, I thought. A shame you didn't get a good stork nest photo - I didn't either, on this trip, but n our Monday outing (which you sadly missed) we made a stop in a village with a great example for us to photograph! I love your description of the houses we visited on this trip as 'looking through the keyhole at the lives of people who once lived here'! I too would have liked more time here and would happily have skipped the winery in favour of lunch here and free time to walk around afterwards, but I don't think any of us realised how much there was here when we arranged the tour.

More happy memories!
Thanks for your visit, Sarah! I too have so many happy memories of our time with friends like you in Bulgaria. I agree with you about Nadia and liked the tour very much, but as you say, there is so much more to see there. And, like you I would have opted for lunch in Koprivshtitsa and more time there even though I liked our lunch at the Starosel winery. I also feel I would have liked to see more in Staro Zhelezare (topic of my next blog), and the list goes on and on! Not sure how Rick feels, but I know I would be happy to return to Bulgaria and see lots more of it. Wish I'd been with you all on the following Monday!

This place sounds interesting, and making memories with ex- VT members will always make for a great blog

Historic Koprivshtitsa
Thanks for visiting, Malcolm. Koprivshtitsa certainly was charming and very interesting if you love history of any kind. And, to do this all with VT friends made everything and every place that much more enjoyable.
