Well, we've arrived in Germany safe and sound :) It's 2:20 in the afternoon here, which is 8:20pm Eastern Time back in the States (Sorry...I was tired and meant to say 8:20am!!) and we're all pretty tired. We're in Hanau for the night and they're putting us on a bus to Mannheim first thing in the morning. If permanent housing is as nice as the temporary place they put us in I'll be pretty okay with living on post :) Our plane got into Frankfurt at 7:30 this morning and it took us a while to clear immigration, get all of our luggage and the dogs, and go through customs (which is where they look at the boys' medical paperwork). It all got slowed down because there were a lot of those big green Army duffels ... read more

Our official moving day is finally here! We'll be getting on our plane in less than 15 hours and I'm way too excited to sleep...so I'm emailing instead :) I know it's been a while since our last "chapter" but honestly, not much has happened. We sat in Alabama for 2 months...although I took a little break and headed back up to Tennessee the last weekend in March. It all started with the fact that I needed one more haircut and just went from there lol. It really was a productive weekend...I closed out a savings account, met with our real estate agent (to date the house still hasn't sold, by the way), got my hair cut and highlighted, and figured out how to renew Matt's driver's license. To get our driver's license to drive in ... read more

Well, we're back in Daleville, AL now. We headed back up to Tennessee last weekend and finished up our last few remaining projects on the house and got the Jeep as ready as Matt could get it for the long trip from Tennessee to Alabama. So now the house is empty...freshly painted, empty and ready to move into today! Hopefully someone else sees it that way soon :) I also came up with a few ideas for how to leave Copper alone without having to disinfect the hotel room after we come back every time. One is to find a way to baby gate the boys in the kitchen (the kitchen opening is really wide and requires me to get creative), which really isn't the ideal situation since the cleaning lady comes once a week and ... read more

Well, it's Day One in Alabama. We got up early this morning, packed up the car and the dogs and were off. The dogs were whining so much when we got started that I thought Matt was going to either throw them or himself out onto the highway but they settled down after a little while and were really good the entire trip. We got into Daleville, AL (right outside of Fort Rucker) and checked into our hotel. We got the large suite...you think of a nice place when you hear the word "suite" but this really isn't nice. It's big, which is nice, but not very clean. But, it's cheap and they allow dogs, so I bought the Wal-Mart version of Clorox Cleanup and started bleaching. That helps :) After Matt got checked in on ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London July 30th 2006

So, today is the day. I'm headed home. We got up early and loaded everything back into the car and Brian drove me to Gatwick. We left in plenty of time had traffic been even remotely normal. But, it took us an hour to drive the last 10 miles to the airport. Traffic was horrible! I now realize I should have had Brian drop me off at the train station and caught the train into Gatwick. But, you live and learn. I was about to be late for my flight and I need to be at work tomorrow (yes, I'm a glutton for punishment!) and couldn't miss it. Brian dropped me off, said to call when I made it to the gate so he knew I wasn't getting stuck in London for the day, and said ... read more

Sarah's mom was entering a contest in town. She entered her marmalade, some eggs from her chickens, and some roses and sweet pea that she had grown. I'd never experienced anything like this sort of small town competition. They had entries from quilting all the way to pies. Do they still have things like this in America? She won honorable mention on her eggs (which was quite good since she just got those chickens a week ago!) and first place on her sweet pea. Elizabeth (Sarah's younger sister) and I ran the entries down in the morning and then went later on to see the results of the judging. Sarah drove me past Stonehenge in the morning...we were going to pay the fee and go closer but the tour buses were already there and it was ... read more

Sarah had a work function to attend...I'm not quite sure what she had to do there but her company had a tent at the Game Fair in Hampshire, so I went with Sarah's mom and her sister. We met up with Sarah for lunch. It looks like it was really interesting and I wish that I had been able to see a bit more of the events. I really wanted to see the falconry but I was able to watch some of the hunting dog events and visit a few of the booths so I did get to see some interesting things. It seems the vacation is winding down now. Tomorrow is my last day and I'm going to be sad to leave.... read more

In the morning, Ali and I packed up and Pam and Richard took us to Sarah's, where we would spend the rest of our trip. They also helped us figure out what train to take from Salisbury into Woking so we could go see a friend of ours in a play. Once we got to Sarah's house just outside of Salisbury we just spent the day visiting with her, her mother, and her sister. Then we changed and caught the train into Woking. Our friend Brian was in Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. We called him when the train got in and he met us at the station. Then we headed on to a pub for dinner before the show. The show was great. It wasn't a fancy theatre but the singers were wonderful and ... read more

We got up in the morning, ate breakfast, played with the resident dog (he really was cute), loaded up the car, and headed back to Inverness. We got into town in record time so we did a bit of shopping then headed to the airport (which we almost couldn't find!) and dropped off the hire car. My suitcase was right at weight...20 kilos (44 pounds). Like I said, I overpacked. We were allowed one checked bag each and one carryon. Everything that wouldn't fit in my suitcase without making it overweight, I put in my duffel which I'm sure weighed almost as much! Our carryon was only supposed to be maximum 10 kilos (22 pounds) so I had to make the bag look like it was a lot lighter than it was. I'm not strong, so ... read more

Breakfast was great, as usual, and we loaded back up into the car and headed off of Sky. Ali left her purple sweater in the restaurant in Shiel Bridge so we backtracked a bit to retrieve it. We had some time to kill until they opened for lunch so we took some more pictures of Eilean Donan while we waited. The funny part is that we ran into the guys that we met at breakfast in Shiel Bridge! They were the funniest little German men that were island hopping on holiday and I had completely forgotten about them until we saw them again. What are the chances? So, we got Ali's sweater and headed north to Ullapool. Much of the roadways north are one lane with pulloffs so you can allow traffic to pass you. It ... read more
