Today we took a day trip to Strasbourg, which is right on the French/German border. I was very excited because I got to use my French phrasebook for the first time :) I couldn't tell you much about the car trip because first of all, I hadn't been to bed yet. Harry Potter was released at midnight and I'm one of those geeky individuals that waited in line at the bookstore (or in my case, what passes for a bookstore at the PX) until they were allowed to sell the book at midnight. I had been up all night reading it and finished the last of it in the car on the way to France. It was VERY good, by the way. If you haven't read the books yet you really should (I'm sure Matt is ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » Midlothian » Edinburgh June 21st 2007

Well, my birthday is June 24th and I got to spend a long weekend in my favorite place in the whole world (so far). Where, you ask? Scotland of course! Since Matt didn't get to go on my trip to Scotland last summer with Ali I took him on a "Best Of" tour of Scotland. We flew into Glasgow Prestwick on Thursday evening and stayed at an absolutely wonderful B&B right there in Prestwick for the night...Firhill Bed and Breakfast. It's by far one of the best B&B's I've ever stayed at in Scotland. The room was huge, the bed was comfortable, we had our own bathroom, and breakfast was great. There was only one other person down at breakfast in the morning and he had the enviable job of testing kayaks. He said he had ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona June 15th 2007

Spain was at the top of Matt's list so we decided to head to one of the major cities for our first real look at the country (our night in Jerez didn't count as a real visit since all we did was eat dinner and sleep there...we didn't actually see much). It was sort of a last-minute trip and we had problems finding someplace to stay that was reasonably priced...I found out later it was because there was a huge music festival that weekend and it was supposed to be one of the biggest tourist weekends of the season for Barcelona. Of course it was!! But, we found a hotel on Hotels.com that, while it wasn't inexpensive, it was affordable...and they had air conditioning so that made it all worth it (Note: Air conditioning is ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Jerez de la Frontera May 27th 2007

We took the ferry over from Tanger to Tarifa, Spain only to discover that we had missed the last bus from Tarifa to Jerez and the next bus the next morning would get us there too late to catch our flight. Matt, Egan, and Anna headed down to see if the rental car place was open while the rest of us transferred our ever growing luggage over to a cafe to sit. They came back without a rental car but with two taxis that had agreed to take us to Jerez for 120 Euros per vehicle, which worked out to 35 Euros a piece...much cheaper than having to rebook our flight!! Once we got into Jerez we were so happy to see our old friend, Hotel Ibis, and decided to stay there for the night. ... read more

We met up with a private bus at our hotel at 12:30 and took it out to Essaouira, a coastal town that had a gorgeous beach. While conservative dress is worn off the beach, bikinis are acceptable for while you're on the beach. However, we still saw plenty of women in full Muslim dress including the headscarf. When you leave the beach you're supposed to cover back up or risk dirty looks, comments, hissing, and possibly even pinching. We hung out on the beach for a few hours and found a group of camels further down. The highlight of the day was definitely the hour ride that we took on the beach and through the sand dunes on the camels! We each got our own camel and had such a good time. My camel's name ... read more

We arrived in Marrakech (also spelled Marrakesh in case you're wondering) after our 8 hour train ride and went looking for our hotel. This time we stayed at Hotel Amani. Again, we dumped our bags and headed right out to find food. We took a petit taxi (a small taxi) out to the big market and immediately saw that this was very different than Fez. There were tents with tables and chairs set up with just about any kind of food you could want. There were small children, who should have been in bed, out running around begging for money and huffing paint. There were drunks and many more young people than what we had seen in Fez. Where Fez was traditional and seemed mostly untouched by tourism, Marrakech seemed like the tourist hotspot. We ... read more

What's funny is that our first big trip while living in Europe isn't even in Europe! We took off for Morocco today and flew into Fez. We took this crazy rickety bus from the airport into town and found our hotel (Hotel Ibis) and checked in and dropped our things. There were 7 of us...Egan, Erin, Joy, Adam, Anna, Matt, and I. Once we dropped our things we went looking for something to eat and walked around town for a while looking for Moroccan food. What's amazing is how many pizza places there are in Fez! We finally stopped and asked someone where a good place to eat was and he was great enough to show us the way. He took us to a pizzaria that also served tangine and couscous so we ordered some ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Rothenburg ob der Tauber May 19th 2007

My friend Meg came into town for a few days so Matt and I decided to show her (and ourselves) Rothenburg ob der Tauber. This is an intact medieval walled city and was really incredible! I met Meg last summer when Ali and I spent our two weeks in Scotland. Meg and Ali went to high school together and have been friends for ages and Meg and I hit it off immediately. When I found out that she was going to be backpacking through Europe at the same time that Matt and I would be getting here I invited her to come visit and the timing worked out great. I showed her Heidelberg (I won't bore you with more pictures of the same) and we did Rothenburg, which I think was even better than Heidelberg. ... read more

Europe » Germany » Baden-Württemberg » Mannheim May 12th 2007

I just wanted to post a blog about what everything is like just living here. First of all, we weren't able to get off-post housing. They've started a new policy here that everyone "regardless of rank or circumstance" must live on post as long as they can accommodate your housing needs (i.e. number of bedrooms). Since we don't have kids we qualify for a 2 bedroom and they had plenty of those :( So, we're on post. We're living in the back of the neighborhood and there are 6 apartments (yes, apartments) in our building. We picked the 3rd floor...our side of the stairwell is all 2 bedroom apartments but the other side is all 3 and 4 bedrooms so they all have kids. Living upstairs eliminates the amount of traffic that goes screaming past ... read more

Exploring HeidelbergThe Many Adventures of M&M The original plan for today was to take the train down to Stuttgart for the festival but after getting online and checking out train fare, we decided we'd try for next weekend instead (so we can book ahead and maybe save a little money...last-minute train fare is pricey!). So, not to waste a day sitting around, we took the Straßenbahn into Heidelberg instead. The Straßenbahn is the local train...it's a lot like a subway works and just as affordable but above ground so we get to see Germany as we're traveling through it. Before getting on the train we stopped at a bakery (because we missed the free breakfast at the hotel) and Matt got a huge soft pretzel and I got something wonderful that I can't remember what it's ... read more
