Geo: 37.5422, -122.515Point Montara Lighthouse Got to the lighthouse a little after 3:00 pm and got ourselves checked in and looked at the common areas and looked at the state of the refrigerator. Happy to say it was all clean, and well equipped. Went and checked out our room. No keys to deal with but a code to open the outside door and one for our roomBoth our room and the dining table had incredible views down to the beach and the shore beyond. The rooms are quite small but we had only brought in what we needed for our two day stay.Decided to go for walk and we ran into a gentleman that told us we should walk the headlands toward the small town. It was a great adventure. Sometimes the path seem to be ... read more

Geo: 38.3514, -121.993We got everything loaded, groceries shopped for and headed out for the country property around 6:00 pm. We were very lucky and did not have much in the way of traffic and made good time. Got there and got the tent set up without the help of the "dawgs" who tried to help us in the beginning. Paul had set us up a refrigerator in the barn to put our thing into which was very nice.Had dinner and a great conversation on topics ranging from the beginnings of the Berkeley Outlet to life today and everything in between. With a beautiful moon to guide us off to bed.Had a nice breakfast of tortillas, chiles, and eggs with fresh cantaloupe that had been rescued from the reduced price fruit section of the Berkeley Bowl. After ... read more

Geo: 37.805, -122.273After our bicycle ride across the Golden Gate Bridge, today was going to be a much less active day. We began the day by meeting Joel, whom we had met in Costa Rica this year for breakfast in Oakland at the Buttercup Restaurant, near Jack London Square. Joel lives in Oakland and recommended we meet here. The #72 bus dropped us about a block from our destination. One of the things we noticed as we rode along were the very interesting buildings that still exist in Oakland. There are many buildings from the 20's and 30's still standing and in many instances are either being restored and have been restored to their former glory. There are a couple of 20's era movie "palaces" along San Pablo and Broadway, the two streets we traveled along. Joel ... read more

Geo: 37.7792, -122.42Just like the weather man said,m the day was clear and the wind did not seem to be blowing. We had decided we were going to use public transportation so we got everything loaded up and off we set. Caught the #49 bus at 7th and Heinz. Was right on time and we got to the BART station in time to figure out how to use the ticket machine, get our ticket, and get downstairs at the correct time and get on the BART.We traveled in a tunnel under the Bay ? got off the BART at the Montgomery station in San Francisco and there was a Peet's coffee kiosk there. We got some delicious coffee and enjoyed the musicians playing for our enjoyment. Emerged from the station into the sunlight and after one false ... read more

Geo: 37.8695, -122.271Beautiful Aquatic Park area of Berkeley and moreOn our visit to California we are staying at the Berkeley Outlet in the Cottage by the Sea It is so nice of Paul and Kjersten to share this wonderful place with us. I always seem to sleep so well in the cottage. We have a great space to be in and can visit with them without getting in their way.We are in walking distance of the Berkeley Bowl, grocery store and can go down there to get our supplies. It is a beautiful walk along Heinz as the flowers are in bloom and are so varied and ones we do not see in Santa Fe .The first morning we were there we got up early and after coffee walked down to the eatery part of the ... read more

Geo: 35.6915, -105.937So, off on a new adventure! Robert found some inexpensive tickets out to California on Southwest Airlines from Albuquerque to Oakland so we off we went. We were going to take a taxi to the Railrunner station but Sophie offered to take us there so we took her up on that.We managed to get everything loaded up and headed out. We took time to have lunch at Aztec before she dropped us off. We had a very nice time catching up and just talking about a wide range of topics.... read more

Geo: 35.6915, -105.937Cochiti Lake is on Pueblo land about 35 minutes south of Santa Fe. There are two entrances. Tertilla Peak Entrance opens in spring, and we had not been there in some time. The huge launch is quite steep so we went around the waterfront to a more level place to air up our Sea Eagle and prepare for the paddle. We could see birds on the water and the clouds on the mountains looked quite forbodeing, but the forecast was for a small chance so we went for it.We were paddling along a cliff face when we were startled by what might have been and owl flying out of a nest in the rocks. We spotted some fisher ducks that Laura determined were Western Grebes. They made exotic calls to each other, strange, echoing sounds on ... read more

Geo: 35.6915, -105.937We signed up for another river restoration/tree planting with WildEarth Guardians. This time it was going to be in the Valles Caldera. We decided to go up the day before like we had done the other time but this time we camped in the Jemez Falls Campground seven miles from the entrance to the Valles Caldera. We took the scenic route up through Los Alamos, past the guard station with no problem and amazingly were some of the last people to arrive at the campsite before it was "campground full"! We had ourselves a nice dinner, and watched the comings and goings of our neighbors. We were surprised to see that there was not a burn ban in effect and people had their campfires blazing! We had looked at the weather before going up there ... read more

Geo: 35.6915, -105.937Getting out and enjoying the outdoors is always enjoyable around Santa Fe. At present, there is a regular Friday hike up Atalaya Peak that really suits our style. This is the second time we have done this particular hike and have enjoyed it both times. We hike at a moderate pace..............no pressure to hike faster and always someone interesting to visit with as you head up and down. This time there were two women we had met on an hike we had taken up near the ski basin. Really did enjoy the pace we set for ourselves as we headed up and then down. The one problems I see with this hike is the people that hike with dogs without having their leash ready to restrain them if people come near them or keep them from ... read more

Geo: 36.2699, -105.783Scouting the Rio Grande Gorge for campsites and future kayak opportunitieshttp://www.blm.gov/nm/st/en/prog/recreation/taos/orilla_verde.htmlAfter a night of fun and dancing in Taos, we headed out to the Rio Grande to see what the campsites were like and also check out the river. Because the state of New Mexico is still in drought conditions, the river is really low and even looked bony in some places.Neither one of us were quite up to kayaking (feeling kinda lazy) so just drove along the edge of the river and checked out the campsites and decided to camp at Arroyo Hondo campsite. We got a campsite that looked out over the river and up to the mountains above the river. Beautiful view. These are primitive in that there is no running water or flush toilets but the price was right........because we are ... read more
