Geo: 36.4072, -105.573Dancing and Dining in TaosAfter we left Abiquiu Lake, we took a back road we had not been on in before and ended up on a gravel road that dropped us down into the gorge of the Rio Grande at the old Taos Junction Bridge. Our kayaking meetup was participating in a Spring Kayak Race and we had planned to join in and maybe do some paddling on the upper, easier parts. The weather was kind of forbodeing and we decided not to paddle but instead go to Taos for an evening of dining and dancing. We did a walk around the older parts of Taos before we went to eat enjoying all the sights and sounds as usual. It was not as crowded as in the summer but the traffic was still backed up ... read more

Geo: 36.2072, -106.318Camping and Kayaking Stunning Lake AbiquiuWe are trying to get in shape for our trip out to California later this month and so decided to go to Abiquiu and do some paddling. We got all packed up and set off. When we got to the campground, the wonderful volunteer that checked us in was very helpful. She picked out a site in hopes we could get level and would like it.We drove to the site and got level and loved the view we were given from the site! We looked out over the lake and had a fabulous view of the mountains in all directions. The sky was overcast and so the clouds were making interesting contrasts on the mountains and lake.Had a nice dinner and called it an early evening. After the sun ... read more

Geo: 36.0222, -106.958Have you ever been to the Jemez Mountains of New Mexico? One of our first trips out west camping back in the day took us to Fenton Lake and on NM 126 to Cuba on our way to Colorado. Its a beautiful area, and this time we camped the two nights around a volunteer project with WildEarth Guardians. We got permission to camp the night before we did the tree planting. We have gotten a new tent to take to Africa and wanted to test it out and see what putting it up consisted of. We were pleasantly surprised to be able to put it up without any trouble. We fixed a soup for dinner and just as we were sitting down to eat a herd of elk came down the mountain side and were ... read more

Geo: 35.6915, -105.937We've been supporters of conservation and environmental organizations for years, organized student projects, taken students to the United Nations to participate in global environmental forums. When we moved to Santa Fe five years ago this month we began looking for environmental opportunities. That's how we found WildEarth Guardians !Our first action with them was planting trees in Santa Fe. Since then we have done more tree planting, and taken down fences in the Valles Caldera. Other ways we help have been helping with mailouts, delivering posters for events, and taking newletters around to various businesses. All of these actitives are great fun each in their own way. Helping with the mailouts allows us to hang out in the wonderful Wild Earth Guardians office with wonderful views and great outdoor eating area. The delivering of posters and newsle ... read more

Geo: 35.265, -105.363We are members of the NM Camping enthusiasts and there was a meetup that looked interesting and was at a place we had never been, much less heard of. Glad we went because it was a beautiful campsite on the Pecos river about an hour north of Santa Fe off I-25 heading toward Las Vegas, NM.Once you leave the freeway, the road meanders through countryside, and along the Pecos river in places and is a great journey. You also pass old homes, businesses, and through a pueblo before entering the state park.It has a different reservation system than I have encountered before. If you find a green-non reservation site, you can have it for one night but then must move to another site or call and pay to make a reservation. What a system!Found ... read more

Geo: 35.6915, -105.937Santa Fe Hiking Meetup up Atalaya TrailOK, we really enjoy being back in Santa Fe. We have our exercise class on Tuesday and Thursday and we belong to several meetup groups that allow us to hike, kayak and camp as we choose. Some of the hikes we have been on turned out to be more difficult than we had thought they would be but we struggled on and finished them. We read about the Atalaya Trail hike and it was described as "over easy" and so we decided to go for it because we had been interested in checking this trail out. Looked the directions up on GPS and off we went. The trail begins in the St. Johns College parking lot. This can be confusing but there are signs that clearly state this.Joined the ... read more

Geo: 30.7593, -98.675Finally we were all packed up and ready to go. The packing, as usual, took longer than we ever anticipate and we were finally on the road by 7 pm and planned to camp at San Angelo State Park.We have found that it takes us 12 to 16 hours to get to Santa Fe depending on the route and how many rest stops. We like to break the drive up into two days and camp one night along the way.Got to San Angelo that night and following the GPS instructions, we headed out toward the San Angelo State Park. Alas, we arrived too late and were out of luck and the park entrances were closed and we had no where to go. Pulled out the big atlas and saw there was a rest stop ... read more

Geo: 29.1833, -102.962We got up in the Basin and decided to drive down to Rio Grande Village since we only had a couple of nights left. It was pretty full so we decided to camp on River Road. The last time we camped here December several years we got stuck in snow! !!!! Since then there had been major flooding and we had not gone down River Road.We were able to get a night at Loop Camp which is more or less around half way from either end and right above the Rio Grande River with wonderful views of US and Mexico. The 51 mile 'primitive' gravel road had been worked on recently and would have been fine for two wheel drive vehicles if one could guarantee no rain. In addition, we were glad we were in ... read more
