Geo: 8.53622, -83.3051Captain Mark Corn is too nice to be listed among the Pirates of the Caribbean, and besides, he plys the beautiful waters of the Golfo Dulce and the Pacific Ocean instead. We had met Captain Mark Corn at a La Palma on our first trip to Puerto Jimenez 2010. We were researching places to stay for our most recent trip and were impressed by the reveiws we had found about his new place.Cabinas Tropicales is a hybrid between a budget guesthouse for his Sport Fishing clients, and place that backpackers can appreciate for the kitchen available for guest use .We spent a number of nights in his nice new accomodations near Puerto Jimenez's bush airport. We enjoyed his tales and meeting his repeat sport fishing clients who told a few and were once again going ... read more

Geo: 8.44348, -83.462To the end of the world with Costa Rica CraigGot up early and invited Craig over for coffee. Cabinas Jimenez has a coffee pot in each of the rooms so it is nice to get up and have that first cup of coffee in bed. Craig came ove and we all sat outside and watched the sunrise, ate pastries and mango slices, and watched the parrots moving to and fro.Got ourselves packed up and Craig ferried us over to Cabinas Tropicales. Our room is actually two rooms and Mark let us have it for the same price as the one we had orginally booked.Tom Kayak has suggested we go check out Dos Brazos for its old buildings and mining history.Dos Brazos is an old mining town in the vicinity of Puerto Jimenez on the ... read more

Geo: 8.53622, -83.3051 Craig is supposed to join us today but we still had time for another early morning bird walk and short adventure on the bikes.2nd day hike Basically we walked the same direction as we had the day before but did manage to see some different birds than we had the day before. Some of the birds of note were the red legged honey-creeper which is a very colorful purple/blue with a "glittering pale turquoise crown" and red legs. We also saw some parrots building their nest and a woodpecker chattering away at us as he flew about. The day before we had hiked to the end of the road where there was a fence and a sign telling you to keep out. This day there was a woman in her car leaving and we ... read more

Geo: 8.53622, -83.3051 CostaRicaCraig's first kayak trip Craig said that though he had gone canoeing many times around Wimberley this was the first time he had ever been kayaking, hoped he didn't fall in. Fortunately the water is quite warm and would not be problem it would be in cold or swift moving water.Craig was a natural in the kayak and had no trouble.Unfortunately my kayak was full of water and kept tracking to one side or the other and so you had to keep paddling to keep it going in a straight line. We were heading to the top of the high tide cycle and could barely make it under the pier for Crocodile Bay.Made it to the what local paddlers call the Rio. After you paddle past the ferry dock, the playa and Delfines, ... read more

Geo: 8.53622, -83.3051First Day Kayak in the Manglar We checked with the front desk at Cabinas Jimenez and firgured out that the tide spread between the high tide and low tide was fine for the afternoon kayak. If one gets caught out at low tide have to carry the kayaks back a long way and could even have trouble getting out of the mangrove. Yuck! But we were assured that the tides would be in our favor so we gathered up what we needed and set off. We took two of the unusual single person sit on top kayaks that we have used before, different from any that we have seen elsewhere with there very nice molded back. They seem to zip along and are quite maneuverable. We decided to go to the left around the point where ... read more

Geo: 8.96337, -83.4564This is the third time we have made this trip down from Manuel Antonio to Puerto Jimenez and it has always worked amazingly well. We discovered Sierpe Shuttle Corcovado -- Alex Chinchilla email : shuttlesierpe@hotmail.com -- on our second trip down and they are fast, reliable and you travel in a comfortable vehicle to Palmar Norte where usually you connect with a bus on to Puerto Jimenez. This trip was no different. As you leave Manuel Antonio in a comfortable air conditioned van, the road climbs up through the jungle past the hotels and cafes to the busy little city of Quepos. From there you leave the busy life of the ci behind and travel through palm nut plantations, small communities and cross several rivers along the way. Many of the small communities are in ... read more

Geo: 9.38945, -84.1347After our long hike the day before, we decided to do the hike we found last time we were in Manuel Antonio that is near the hostel. I'm not sure exactly how we found it but it does start near some other hotels and someone has done a lot of work. The trail for the most part is cleared and there are ropes in many places to keep you on track. At the beginning of the trail, we were greeted by some serious yappers that finally went back inside their fence when they saw we were not worried by them. What is so amazing to me is the fact that you almost immediately are in the thick jungle. I am pretty sure that some of this is old growth because it does run adjacent to ... read more

Geo: 9.38945, -84.1347Raphael's Terrazas This is another one of our favorites for eating. Two years ago, we met the gregarious owner, Raphael, who gave us some of the history of his place and urged us to come eat there. We did and were glad we did.The first time we went to eat at Raphael's this trip, he was not there but we had a great meal and fabulous sunset. We went back a second time and got there for happy hour. While we were waiting for the sun to go down in the cool shade a troup of squirrel monkeys appeared like magic ~! Robert thought he spied Raphael and went over to talk to him. Robert told him about meeting him two years ago and he came over to our table to visit with us. ... read more

Geo: 9.38945, -84.1347Got up fairly early and decided to do our walk we had discovered on our last trip here, along the beautiful Manuel Antonio Playa beach and then up a steep 4x4 gravel jungle road to get back up to the main road in Manuel Antonio. We enjoyed this instead of the National Park on our last trip because there are far fewer people, not the crowds one has to contend with at times in the park.We had thought about doing a kayak rental but some of what we read talked about the rough surf and so we were not surch if we wanted to take that kind of chance. So we opted for this walk and were glad we did. Set off from the main beach past all the workers getting the umbrellas and chairs ... read more
