Geo: 9.66303, -85.0671We have now been to this new hiking paradise five times and each time have been rewarded by at least one new bird we have not seen in this area. We have been able to leave the hostel no later than 7:00 a.m. and have been rewarded for our efforts. One morning we were starting up the trail and Robert saw something in the road and it was a agouti heading across the road. We headed on up the road and were able to identify at least one of the small birds that flit and flick through the trees and are so very hard to identify. This one was a gray crowned yellow throat which is one of the wood-warblers.We got to observe two mot mots in a tree and it took us a few ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica January 27th 2013

Geo: 9.66303, -85.0671We are trying to get up in the morning and do some sort of exercise before it gets too hot. Of course, "gets too hot" is a relative term. It is in the 80's from about 6:30 a.m. on. The highest we have seen on our thermometer in our room is 88! So, knowing this, we have been getting up around 5:30, cup of coffee, gather things up and set off. We did two hikes downhill, the ruta de evacuation and a walk about town. Robert suggested we head up from Luna Llena and see what we could see. Headed out and made it around two curves and there was a road heading off to the right. Decided to take a chance and see what was down that road. Came to a place in ... read more

Geo: 9.66303, -85.0671Feeling much better and got up and went up to the chairs by the fence to watch the sunrise. It was a beautiful sunrise, popping up quite rapidly over the water. We fixed our fruit and toast with peanut butter breakfast and then decided since it was overcast, we should get some exercise.Went to our room and did our yoga routine, then headed down into town. Walked down to check out the times for the bus back to Puntarenas. Robert seems to think it would be great fun to ride the boat to Jaco. I still am not of the same mind. We walked down the beach toward the camping area and the Hotel Arenas. All pretty much looks the same. Still can't quite understand how people can camp in that weather but many ... read more

Geo: 9.66303, -85.0671What's happening in Montezuma............It was nice to see most of the places that were in business two years ago when we were here are still in business and the street vendors are still steady trying to sell their wares as well.As in many parts of the world Montezuma apparently has occasional water shortages. On our third day here, we were told the kitchen was going to close at noon and not open until the next day, but the showers and toilets were going to be in full operation.Apparently the area did not get as much rain as they usually do and are suffering as a result. Also as in many parts of the world, one notices evidence of the lack of conservation in a number areas around town........leaving the water running when rinsing cleaning ... read more

Geo: 9.66303, -85.0671Back To Paradise In MontezumaAfter a rough start we were ready to do a little exploring and get some supplies for our days at Luna Llena. We decided to have breakfast at El Sano Banano. We had eaten in their garden there last time we were in Montezuma and it was quite delicious, though pricey. Both ordered the Costa Rica breakfast which comes with beans and rice, two eggs, tortillas and a few plantains. We also ordered a fruit plate since we had very little the night before. It was all very good and the setting is quite nice. We like to sit outside in the garden so we can see any of the "creatures" that decide to pass through. It was fairly calm with just a few magpie jays and one iguana to entertain ... read more

Geo: 9.93, -84.08Laura:Got up at 4 am ,and took a quick shower . Alonso had coffee waiting and some food but neither of was hungry. Alonso had called the station the night before for tims drove us in the dark down the winding streets into San Jose and to the station in the dark to avoid San Jose Traffic and get us in line for tickets with time to spare.. Very interesting to see the Tico's up early and walking for exercise along our route.Passed a few people sleeping on the side walk along the route near downtown so that raised our level of concern but teh station had a rope across the drive and looked pretty safe. As Alonso dropped us off a guard or a taxi driver, we could not tell which, pointed the ... read more

Geo: 9.9054, -84.1303 We woke up in our beautiful room high above San Jose and the Central Valley and took a wonderful shower, glancing out the bathroom window at the gorgeous view! Yes, last night was not a dream, the view was still there.Alonso had moved his hostel from near the airport in Alajuela to way up high above the Central Valley to the upscale San Antonio de Escazu, and also near a small town called, all things, El Llano. This was interesting to us in that our camp house in is in Llano, TX.Also very Interesting to us that we had actually stayed at a B & B in San Antonio de Escazu the last night on our first trip to Costa Rica back in the 80's ! So here we were, back in a ... read more

Geo: 30.2676, -97.743Robert notes:We spent four or five days in Austin taking care of health stuff, getting some things for our trip and visiting relatives.Saw some friends off on their trip on Amtrak from Houston to Alpine and return.Visited Robert's mother and brother and sister, also saw a couple of friends and talked travel. They have also been to Costa Rica several times, had told us about Montezuma where we will stay about two weeks and love. They will begoing to New Zealand where we have been twice. We were planning on taking a taxi to the airport since we were leaving after most were off to work when my nephew Marcus offered to take us to the airport, which was wunderbar~! Geo: 30.2676, -97.743While traveling around in Texas, visiting friends and relatives for the holidays and enjoying antique camp house in Llano, we encountered some interesting birds and such....You would think we would be experts by now as much traveling we do. Experts in the opinion category, that's for sure. What to bring, what to leave behind and making the lists.I (Laura) start making the lists weeks early and add too them as we go. Rather than just putting things on a list in a random manner, I title the lists by category: essentials, life would be nice with these, bedroom/closet, kitchen, living room, bathroom and fill in the items in the appropriate category. Maybe this is overkill but it sure does help me since we pack over a period of time and not just on one ... read more

Geo: 30.7592, -98.6747Finally got all the bags to the 99% packed and it was time to close up the house and get ready to go to Austin. Bill came by with a bon voyage gift of Ruta Maya coffee which of course had to pack some to take with, and off we went.Since we were going to Marble Falls on our way into Austin, we stopped to see the Bald Eagles.Eagles mate for life, and for years this pair has returned to nest eight miles outside of Llano. They are really a treat to watch. They were taking turns carrying in nest building materials.Later will be the real treat: watching the young ones trying to get up their courage to fly!Made it in to Austin and continued with our errands getting everything ready. Decided to spend ... read more
