Geo: 29.3285, -103.205We arrived just about the time the Campground Hosts were making there rounds. We shared a laugh about a story they had told us about when we were there last. I had asked if the mountain lions had been around sighted lately and he said that recently a man of asian descent had knocked vigorously on his RV door, shouting 'llountain lion, llountain lion' . When he calmed down he told the story of walking into the restroom whose door had been propped open due to the summer heat and drought. There in a stall drinking from a toilet was a huge mountain lion. They suggested we try a site that was a former campground host site and it worked out perfectly. We were very close to the campground perimeter, experienced another of the World Class ... read more

Geo: 29.3214, -103.616Got up and had breakfast and the group had decided to hike to Cattail Falls which is one of our favorite when in the park. Unfortunately we fell down on checking the gauge on the truck and had to go out of the way to get diesel before heading down the road. The ocotilla were in full bloom and so beautiful. We also saw bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush and other colorful blossoms. The cactus were also blooming in great profusion. Got to the beginning of the trail and had a bite to eat while we waited for the rest of the gang to arrive. It was a perfect day for a hike, nice sunshine but not too hot. Off we went with a few snacks, water, and our trusty poles! This trail can be accessed by hiking ... read more

Geo: 30.3586, -103.665 Marathon Alpine TerlinguaGot up the next morning and decided to eat at Johnny B's right next to the Gage. Good old food that is not really good for you but good tasting while it is hot. Stuffed ourselves and then we set off. We went to the French Grocer to check out what they had to offer and bought a few things but the produce section was not very full and this was what we needed the most of so decided to head to Alpine to see what we could find there.Enjoyed the ride and looking at the changing scenery as it flew past. The sun was shining and it was beautiful and got there and got to the store. Did your shopping and of course find many more things to buy than ... read more

Geo: 30.3037, -97.7696Mad Dash Deer Dodging across Texas to Big BendAfter we left Austin, stopped by Llano to pickup some very important items. Guess what? Cannot remember what they are!We chose a new route === drove to Mason then on to Medina and took Hwy 190 to Iraan and from there got on I-10. It was a very good choice because the 18 wheelers were not in evidence as they are on I-10. Traffic for the most part was light and we made good time.Saw wild turkeys, deer and armadillos on this journey. What a treat! Of course as it got dark, we began to worry about keeping a deer from running out and ruining our whole day! Honked the horn to alert them to our passing by and made it without incident.Got to Marathon about ... read more

Geo: 9.74892, -83.7534Set in the cloud forest above the village of San Gerardo de Rivas is the lovely Cloudbridge ReserveAfter our lunch at the Talamanca Lodge, we decided to hike on further and see how far we got. We are in better shape this year and were able to make it all the way to Cloudbridge! We went to Cloudbridge twice while we were in San Gerardo de Rivas last time and on one of the times we went on an extensive hike with Adam around Cloudbridge and to the far waterfalls and areas they are working on recovering.Part of the Cloudbridge philosophy is to protect the area from poachers and to stop farming and allow for the regrowth of the plants and trees that once grew there. They are also planting trees and vegetation so they ... read more

Geo: 9.42715, -83.6614hiked to Talamanca Lodge and enjoyed meal while working on the InternetWe don't have as much time in San Gerardo de Rivas as in previous trips, but decided to make the best of the time we have and so decided to head up to the Talamanca Lodge and work on some stories up there. The cost of Internet use has gone up to $4.50 an hour but the view out over the valley is quite nice.We did this hike twice and both times really enjoyed the scenery as you walked along. One of the mornings we got to see the milk cans sitting out for pickup and drop off. Also saw the milk truck as it came past.As you walk along this road, you marvel at the people that participate in the Cerrera Chirripo. ... read more

Geo: 9.74892, -83.7534Decided to break up the trip back to San Jose by stopping at our favorite stopover, the Roca Dura in San Gerardo de Rivas. With ease and calm we made it on the 9:00 a.m. bus from Puerto Jimenez heading to San Isidro de General. The driver did hit us up for extra because we had more than one bag apiece to put under. Small price to pay to not have to keep up with it. Once again as we left town am reminded how important the bus is to people who have to depend on it for their transportation. As a result the first part of the trip was slow going, with people getting on and off the bus. After several hours had a 20 minute stop at a big truck stop style place with ... read more

Geo: 8.53622, -83.3051In 2009 we visited Puerto Jimenez for the first time.We were having breakfast in a local soda (cafe) and talking to another traveler from the US who had come to Costa Rica for dental surgery in San Jose and was exploring the Osa Peninsula while waiting for another procedure date. He said that he had just met a woman who had had her teeth cleaned in Puerto Jimenez. Our dentist in Austin retired after we did and we were due for a cleaning. That's how we discovered our wonderful dentist. One of the reasons we are back in Puerto Jimenez on this trip is for Robert to get another crown put on one of his teeth and for me to get my teeth cleaned. Dentist on SundayDra. Morales has told us her goal is to make ... read more
