Geo: -13.1339, 27.8493Getting adjusted to the rhythm of Wildlife Camp. Did our walk while it was still cool. Mago is still in the chalet area. Herman showed us the new "hide" he has built over near the restaurant. He thinks during the dry season there will be a lot of activity there. He also told us there had been 5 lions near his house last night but they did not come down to the campsite.Told us the Zambian government is going to allow 24 lions to be killed at $100,000 each if we understood correctly. The money is supposed to help the community but he is not sure if it really will.Went back to the camp and fixed a nice lunch of green beans and potatoes and a salad and were eating lunch when a beautiful ... read more

Geo: -12.895, 31.9228Up and ready to start packing up and Morphy was already at Mabuya. He had business in town and was staying there so we stepped up our efforts. Pretty much had everything out of the tent and then it started raining but was a very brief rain!Got everything loaded up and in the car and went to settle our bill with Mabuya and the internet was down. Tom told us to settle up when we returned after Wildlife Camp.Set off around 9:00a.m. and Bizwik was our driver again. Nice, polite and a careful driver. We got stopped in three road blocks along the way and he had to pay at two of the stops. Evidently police corruption is on the upswing according to both Bizwik and John our second driver. The last time Bizwik ... read more

Geo: -13.9808, 33.7721Finished up our packing and were ready to head out. Called Uber to take us to the airport and were able to get to the airport in under 30 minutes!!United has a new check in procedure there. You self check in, get your boarding passes and luggage tags and then you go to the check in counter where they weigh your luggage and then you are checked in and ready to go through security.Right before we went to sleep on Monday, Robert checked the news and Lufthansa airlines was having to cancel flights because of a ground employees strike. On Monday they had cancelled 900 flights but our flights from San Francisco to Frankfurt and Frankfurt to Johannesburg were still flying. Then to further complicate matters, there had been a security issue with the ... read more

Geo: 38.3514, -121.993Head up to Vacaville to Paul and Kjersten's country property where they will be having a party on Sunday where they will be grilling the last of the lamb that was killed by coyotes. Kjersten had created a beautiful bower for us to set our tent up in and it was perfect for listening to the birds in the early morning. Good chance for us to try out the new tent and figure out where we will be putting all our things. The first evening we had a light supper and then sat out by a wonderful fire and visited before calling it an early evening. The next morning had oranges and grapefruit from their trees along with cheese and toast. Did a walk around the perimeter checking out the native oak trees Kjersten had ... read more

Geo: 37.8695, -122.271Thursday, April 21Start heading back to Berkeley after stopping in Santa Rosa at the REI where we bought a Midori tent that has about the same footprint as the Base Camp 6 and the Rolling Meadows tents. The good news is according to the specs, it weighs 10 pounds. When we got back to the Outlet and set it up and weighed it, nope, it was 13 pounds but still is lighter. We took the Coast Highway back down to the city and the drive was spectacular and traffic was light and so we were able to pull out several times to enjoy the view. Stopped at our favorite store in Gualala and got a few groceries so we would not have to leave the Outlet once we got there.Friday April 22Was a rainy day ... read more

Geo: 39.3078, -123.798Tuesday, April 19 and Wednesday April 20 Kayaking the Albion RiverDecided to go and do some kayaking after eating breakfast at the headlands at Russian Gulch. While we were eating breakfast the first day, three gray whales came into the cove and glided around for a while and then headed on down the coastline as far as we could tell.Went to Albion Campground to rent the kayak. It is a very easy process; go to office and pay, then out to storage container to get paddles and lifejackets and then go down and pick out which kayak to use and off you go!We got to watch mother harbor seals with their young baby that were quite fun to watch. At times it appeared as though they were watching us as well. On both days ... read more

Geo: 39.3078, -123.798Sunday, April 17Up fairly early and on the road with a stop in Santa Rosa for some more supplies. Bought in solar charging system to use with charging our phones and other small devices. Took Highway 128 out of Santa Rosa which is a very winding road. Found that the car handles the curves very well and so the drive was quite enjoyable. Got to Russian Gulch State Park and decided on Site #17. It is a nice space with room for more than tent and is on the creek with nice trees across the road.Got the tent set up and then drove to the picnic area at the top of the hill with the great view across the headlands . Fixed our dinner of things we had bought at the Berkeley Bowl and ... read more

Geo: 36.6002, -121.895Decided to go on hike with Kjersten and she thought it would be nice to walk through the neighborhoods in Berkeley and then up into the park that is above the Claremont Hotel. It always interesting to me to look at the various types of architecture as we walk along to say nothing of the lovely flowers planted here and there in the different yards. As we were walking, we were steadily climbing higher and higher and then were at the park entrance. Walked up for a while and then were rewarded with a stunning view back out toward San Francisco. It was a very clear day and so you could see forever. Walked back down and decided to have lunch at the Claremont Hotel. It is one of those grand old hotels from the ... read more

Geo: 36.6002, -121.895Taxes were done early, and paid before heading out on this vacation!!!No rain so easy break down and load up heading back to Berkeley. Got to Berkeley and got settled in the cottage. Paul arrived and got us taken care of us on keys for the stay. Got a few things at Berkeley Bowl and Walgreen's came through with the doxycycline needed for the trip.Cleaned up and took the worker shuttle that come through the Heinz office buildings right by Paul's and stops at the Oakland/Ashby Bart station where we got out and then walked on to the Garage Gallery for the show. The exhibit was quite interesting. The artist sits down every day with a 4x6 paper with felt markers and draws what she is feeling. Bought one of the paintings for our ... read more

Geo: 36.6002, -121.895Made a decision to stay at Veteran's Memorial for another night because Pfiefer Big Sur campground could possibly be full and just drive the Big Sur coast and come back to already set up camp. There is also the price difference; Veteran's $30 and Big Sur $78.Got a croissant and coffee at Peets and then drove over to the Coast Guard pier to check things out. It was so very sad; there was a seal dying on the shore with fishing twine wrapped around his neck. Evidently someone had called so see if it could be saved.T The traffic was not horrible and so we were able to pull off and look at the view Stopped at our favorite place to check and see if we can see any condors flying around and check ... read more
