Geo: -24.9895, 31.5857Get packed up and on the road and headed to Skukuza. Decided to take the tar road because would be the quickest route based on road conditions. The speed limit on the tar roads is 50kmph and on the secondary roads if 40kmph so observing the speed limits does make a difference. While planning this trip had read on SanParks forum about the death of a cheetah by a speeding automobile and did not want to be a part of this.Even driving the tar roads, you get to see quite a bit and this particular day proved to be an example of a great day on the tar roads! Took a quick drive down the road to the Sweni Dam but there were no elephants in sight but there were some hyena with a ... read more

Geo: -24.9895, 31.5857Don't know how we did it, but we were #1 at the gate at Satara. Since Satara is the big predator campground, the line to get out is usually past the service station when we get there at 5:50 am on a typical day.Decided to do the H-6 road which runs roughly parallel to the S100 but is a tar road. We saw tje five cheetah on this road and are always checking. Did not find the cheetah but did come across a female hyena and two young with some sort of kill. They were eating on the remains and up sneaks a black back jackal trying to sneak in and get some of the remains. The mother warned the jackal off and then they headed out. There did not seem to much more ... read more

We left out of the gate and took the road toward Orpen and then turned off onto the Timbavati road. It is a dirt road and it goes through many different types of landscape. There is an open plain in the beginning and then the scrub trees and views of the river, followed by larger trees and other interesting vegetation. One of our favorite pull outs is at the beginning of the road. We pull all the way down to ... read more

Geo: -24.9895, 31.5857 Came up with this title but for some reason can find no pictures of a warthog. Anyway, we did see a lot of warthog as we moved from Letaba down to Satara. Drove through the campground and found what we thought was the perfect spot to camp. It was close to a cook stand, the ablution block and easy in and out.So, we set up our tent and did a nice walk around before we checked in at reception. Fixed a nice lunch and then time for a short nap before deciding the rest of the day. Had set up a clothesline because we were going to wash clothes after the nap. While we were napping heard some people come in and start setting up behind us. While we were napping they walked ... read more

Geo: -23.95, 31.117.Need pics of camp gateOne South African described Letaba as a paradise compared to the camps further south. It has big trees and lots of palms is scenic. We always enjoy camping there though.not much big game but lots of neat birds (goliath, saddlebill, maribou stork drove toward Mopani and saw a secretary birdWe have always enjoyed camping at Letaba but were a little worried this year because of the drought and would there be any water in the river when we got there. Letaba is usually the furthest north we go in the park to camp. Many of the South Africans we talked to said Letaba was a paradise compared to the parks further south. The landscaping around the campground is very lush compared to some of the others and there are some nice ... read more

Geo: -30.5595, 22.9375Checked in at Olifants and they said our room was ready they thought. So we drove over and they were almost done with room but we could go ahead and bring our things in. Did not see a refrigerator outside the room on the porch as before and asked if we had a fridge. Evidently they had to move the fridges inside because the baboons had no problem turning the fridge around and getting what they wanted from it.The gardener told us a fairly wild story about how the monkeys watch what you are doing and then convince the baboons to break into your refrigerator, or room and get what the monkey wants. Not sure if the story is completely accurate. That first day we unloaded everything and did some relaxing. While we were taking ... read more

Geo: 41.2119, 20.1181Heard lions during the night and in the early morning. We were #1 at the gate even though we had to break down and load up the car! Decided to head down to the Orpen waterhole and see what we could see. Were we ever rewarded. Walking across the road in front of us was a very nice maned male lion. He walked over to the waterhole and had a very long drink of water. As the day became brighter we could see more and more of this lion. Finished his drink of water and then started walking along the side of the road and then eventually moved out on to the main road where we and several other cars followed him for awhile before leaving him to his wandering. We saw some giraffe with the ... read more

Geo: -24.9854, 31.6018Get ourselves packed up and on the road by 6:19. Did not think this was too terrible because was our first break down and load up since we began our adventures in Kruger. Decided to go to Lake Panic hide and see if we could see the leopard. Luckily there were not eight cars in the parking lot and so we were able get out and check things out. There is a sign at the hide asking that no more than eight cars be at the hide. Sure to keep things calm. Also noticed the sightings board did not include the leopard at Lake Panic Hide. Would not be nice to the birders! Were sitting there watching the bird activity and suddenly the guy next to me says, there she is and sure enough on ... read more

Geo: -24.9854, 31.6018edOur first day was part game drive and a trip into Hazyview to try to find a table for our campsite. Rob did not have the one we have used before and we really missed having one for our campsite. We found out that shopping at the end/beginning of the month in a major city is a mistake because it seems everyone is out shopping. Did not find a table but did find the names of some possible places from a guy in one of the stores. The next day we were third at the gate and took off for the Phabeni road. Went to the place where we have seen leopard before but there was no one and then down Waterhole road one of our favorite roads in the park. There were cars stopped ... read more

Geo: -24.9895, 31.5857Up and on the road fairly early and made it through the small villages to enter through Numbi gate. There was no one else in line so it went fairly well. On the way to Skukuza we did see four rhinos! Great welcome to the park.Got to Skukuza and went to the campsite and our favorite spot was just being emptied!!! Waited until they left and then we moved right in. Did a walk around the camp as we went to check in. Did an inventory of all the things we had purchased and put them in a logical order in the trunk and then everyone was happy! When we went to sign in, we checked with reception and there was an extra hut available at Olifants for the day before Robert's birthday. We decided ... read more
