Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica January 23rd 2017

Geo: 10.4459, -83.4673Ok so now we are off to Tortuguero! Robert had done some research and found there was a 9:00 am direct bus to Cariari and from there to catch a bus on to La Pavona to take the boat on to Tortuguero. On January 22, repairs began on a main bridge between Alejuela and San Jose. According to the information Robert found, only buses and legal taxis would be allowed on the bridge after 6 a.m. Everyone else would have to take the long way around to San Jose. We were traveling on January 22 at 5:45 am and made it to the bridge at 6:03 so had to take the long way around. Since it was Sunday, traffic was light and we made good time and got to the Gran Caribenos Terminal at 6:25 ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica January 22nd 2017

Geo: 10.0333, -84.1833When we arrive in Costa Rica, we usually spend the night in Alejuela where the airport actually is even though the tickets say San Jose. Robert does a lot of research and finds us a place 10 to 15 minutes from the airport usually with a kitchen where we can relax, get some groceries and be ready to head out in the morning. When we first arrive at the airport, we usually get a sim card, sms and data service for a month to be able get wifi in places we stay that have no wifi service. Of course, this is another thing that Robert checks for when planning where we will stay. One of the major services is Kolibi which operates a desk at the airport and can take care of all of ... read more

Geo: 30.2676, -97.743Spent our last night at La Quinta because we had an early flight to Costa Rica........6:30 which meant getting to the airport at 4:30! Used Pronto taxi service because we could a pickup in advance and our driver showed up early!Travel tip- always try curbside check inGot to the airport and tried our luck with curbside check in. We were able to check in there but did have to rearrange some of our items in our bags. Robert is never over on his checked bag until today. His bag weighed 57 and Laura's was 51. The curbside is much more generous with your bags being over a bit in our experience Took the big purple dry sack, first aid kit, peanut butter and horseradish out of Robert's. Put the purple dry sack into Laura's ... read more

Geo: 37.4594, -110.354Lone Rock Lake PowellAfter doing some shopping, getting gas, and pumping out headed to Lake Powell and Lone Rock camping area. We had been in touch with our friends from Kanab and they were going to meet us there and kayak in the morning. Just like everywhere else, there were a lot of campers at Lone Rock. The area down by the beach is dry primitive camping but a nice area to camp. Were checking out where we might set up when horror, we got stuck! Had to unhook and tried to use our leveling boards to get out but it was getting worse. Up comes a lady driving her off road vehicle and offers to help us. We have a tow rope, she went and got her car. While she was getting her ... read more

Geo: 37.2844, -109.551Albuquerque to BluffUp and on the road to Albuquerque to pick up Stefan and Marianne at the Route 66 Hostel where they were waiting for us and ready to get on the road. The Balloon Festival was going on when we left and we did get to see a few balloons as we headed out. Made good time with a grocery shopping trip in Farmington and got to Bluff and the Cottonwood campground at around 5:00pm. Stefan and Marianne are staying in one of our tents using borrowed sleeping bags and pads. Marianne said she would rather tent camp than sleep in the camper with us which worked out just fine. Got their tent set up and walked to the Cottonwood Restaurant for dinner. The restaurant used bandannas as napkins and you were urged ... read more

Geo: 47.369, 8.53803Trip to Lake Lucerne and KastenienbaumStefan's family owned a house on Lake Lucerne that has been sold but the Erni 's still can use the boat house and so we went to spend a weekend enjoying beautiful Lake Lucerne and the boat house. We set up our tent near the boat house with a lovely view out to Lake Lucerne. Got our things unpacked and set up and had a great dinner cooked outside on the home made grille and had a few glasses of wine before calling it a day.The next morning enjoyed coffee and views across the lake before a leisurely breakfast. Most of the day was spent helping to some cleaning up of the shore area where detritus washes ashore and collecting fallen limbs to be used in the fire in the ... read more

Geo: 47.5597, 7.58053NOTE about the pictures: they tend to jump from event to event and seem to be out of order. This is because the pictures are in folder by camera........7D, laura camera, Robert pocket camera, and phone camera but hope does not confuse too much!In 2014 while at Wildlife Camp in Zambia we met two intrepid travelers, Albert and Sue. We immediately became friends, talked of travel and because they had been to Venice picked their brains for our upcoming trip to Venice. When we finalized our dates to be in Switzerland, we contacted them and they invited us to come visit them in Basel. Stefan had some family business to attend to in Basel and so we all took the train to Basel where Stefan and Marianne headed off to attend to their business ... read more

Geo: 47.369, 8.53803ThereNOTE: As seems to be par for the course.............we are behind in getting stories up and out about our adventures so will focus on the highlights of our time in Switzerland. Because Switzerland has such a excellent public transportation system, we only rode in a car one time and that was pulling a trailer with three kayaks and the rest of the time we walked, biked, bus, tram, train and boat!Arrived in Zurich very tired from our early morning departure from Paris and our last month of dawn to dusk adventures in Kruger so did some catching up on our much needed rest. Our first adventure was a bike ride with Stefan down to the Zurichsee and biking around part of the lake. Managed without incident but was a little scary right at the end ... read more

Geo: 48.8566, 2.35097 Condensing Paris and Switzerland into a short story highlighting some of the major activities during the time we stayed here.We choose to stay in an Airbnb again and this time it was in the Pigalle area. The girl who owned the place was not going to be in town and left our key with the local nearby bar. No problem getting the keys from the bar and finding the outside entrance. There were supposed to be some instructions on how to get to the actual place but all there was was a key and two sets of numbers. Got inside the building and got to the floor we thought we should be on but now what? Were talking back and forth and a gentleman appeared from upstairs and told us he would help ... read more
