Central America Caribbean » Cuba » Oeste » La Habana February 24th 2013

I did the morning tour of Old Havana this morning. Wow. What a difference to the area that the Nacional is in. Centro Havana was nothing too special and a whole lot of hounding of people trying to sell things. But old town is just in a world of its own. So many sights and sounds to take in. Cuba had just been on the Australian Amazing Race so recognised some landmarks from that like Ambos Mundos and other places made famous by Hemingway. It was a nice walk around. After that I returned to the Nacional. I walked to Hotel Victoria to gauge how far it was from the National to see if I needed a taxi. It was only a few minutes. Even with my regrettably over packed backpack it would be easy to ... read more

Today was my full day trip to Vinales booked through Cubatur desk at the Hotel Nacional. The tour was conducted in 3 languages. Spanish, English and God knows what. Today I'm slightly depressed about how crap my Spanish is and that no one on this tour seems to speak English as a Primary Language. Not that I want to chat away all day, but the option to be able to is nice. Vinales was about 2 hours south of Havana. We stopped at the Valley to get photos and there were people selling souvenirs . Then we stopped at a Tabacco Farm to see how Cigars were made. The farmer rolled a few and handed them out for the group to smoke. We then got invited into the farm house for coffee and snacks. Next stop ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Cuba February 22nd 2013

Had a little bit of a sleep and then tried to see if I could get on an afternoon walking tour of old town but unfortunately the hotel only books the morning tours. I booked a tour tomorrow for a trip to Vinales and then for the walking tour in 2 days from now. I left the hotel, past the old cars lined up out the front, and shouts of 'Miss, Gorgeous, Taxi, Take you anywhere' down the Malecon. I walked that towards old town taking photos along the way but I didn't really know where I was going and gave up about halfway there and went back and hung out by the hotel pool. Tonight I went and saw the Cabaret Parisien. Although it was completely in Spanish I could follow it enough. Your just ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Cuba February 21st 2013

Breakfast in the morning was included and was a nice buffet. The shuttle is free and leaves every 30 mins and so was at airport in no time. Easy check in and then I set off to find where I could purchase my Visa for Cuba. It took me a while but eventually found the right counter and got my Tourist Card. Airport had free wifi and a decent sized food court upstairs. Ate, chatted online and waited for my flight. Once again I was the only Blonde on the flight. Don't think I'll be blending in in Cuba too much – I definitely look like a Gringo. I've been told Immigration in Cuba takes a really long time. I was lucky in that I was somehow one of the first in the que. The immigration ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Panama » Panamá » Panama City February 20th 2013

Today I start my next adventure. Cuba bound Via Panama. I choose to fly to Havana with Copa Air. I could have gone a bit cheaper going with Areomexico/Cubana however I wanted to avoid using Cubana. Yes they have a terrible safety record but I actually wanted to avoid them as I read that they are notorious for delaying flights – including delays of 48-72 hours. Apparently if they 'delay' a flight and not cancel it they do not need to organise accommodation etc. As I was doing the tour I didn't want to risk a late arrival. Therefore a took advantage of a chance for a layover in Panama. Copa was a nice airline to fly with. Like reviews said they look after you enough and did 2 food services on a 6 ish hour ... read more

What a better way to spend Valentines Day then to leave the county. Business Class to LA. Now thats love. Thank you Virgin. Despite some horror stories from Crew regarding Standby and check in I manager to drop my bags and be issued a business class ticket right away. No standby pass. Winning. Went through security, got a nice pat down , ate some maccas and then did what I do best – sit on my butt and kill time at the airport. Boarding time, scan of the ticket and oh oh... No deal. Luckily the beeping error was just a change of seat and I still ended up in business class. I think I was sitting there like a deer in headlights until the door was closed and there was no chance I was being ... read more

Made our way back to Anaheim to finish the tour. We drove past Hollywood again and had an optional in Hollywood to do the Famous Houses. We jumped on a bus and had a tour of Beverly Hills and Bel Air. It was pretty interesting and cool but I took photos and don't remember who any of the houses I took photos belonged to. When we got back to the hotel we got to do our own thing. Tour officially over. Most of us went into Disney Town for dinner but again not a big night - dinner then bed. We met up with Chris from Canada and he also came to Venice Beach with us a few days later. The next day Cat and I departed Anehim for our Venice Beach accommodation. We figured the ... read more

Today wasn't too long a drive. We headed towards Carpinteria via Santa Barbra where we got to chill out on the beach and look around the shops. The going things seemed to be these like peddle car things. Barb and I hired a 2 person one but other people hired ones that held about 8 people. You had like bicycle peddles and it was pretty hilarious. Good workout. We went up and down the boardwalk and around the streets for several hours. There wasn't too much going on for the last night on tour. We had dinner in the hotel restaurant, a few drinks but it was not a big or late night. ... read more

We had 2 free days in San Francisco to do whatever it was we liked. Before leaving OZ I got tickets to Alcatraz for the 25th. The others did a tour of the baseball field. Cat came with me to Alcatraz. It was great. Freezing but great. Its the one thing you have to do in San Francisco. I did learn something on this trip. San Fran is freezing!! We got the ferry out to the island taking some photos of Alcatraz in the distance. Once the boat docks you walk up to the prison at your own pace and then get head phones for a self guided tour. Its really good and really brings you into the story of what happened on Alcatraz. Pretty interesting. It was better then I expected it to be and ... read more

Sorry if my blog gets a bit shorter now. I did not write any further notes while on tour and so I'm just doing this now from memory - 2 years later. I wont make that mistake again. Anyway..... Today it was onto San Francisco. It was a relatively short drive - only a few hours. We had a bit of a driving tour around the city so we had an idea of things we might want to do and see in our 2 free days in San Francisco. We were taken to fisherman's wharf and had some time to look around then drove over the bridge to get some photos. We drove past the houses that were used in Mrs Doubtfire and Full House "the famous four". That afternoon/night we had our sunset sail optional. ... read more
