We were due to wake up at 7 however our home stay mumma only woke us at 720. Our guide said we would help make breakfast but ours was already prepared. It was like a fried bread/tortilla thing. They gave me 6 pieces. So nice but I struggled to finish 3. I feel so bad not finishing all the food they are giving me. Following breakfast we did some house chores like washing up for mumma then papa came and took us sheep herding. He had done most of it we just had to catch them in the final field. Each sheep had rope attached to them so we had to catch 2 at a time and tether them together in various parts of the field. We also peeled potatoes by hand picking the skin but ... read more

I didn't have a great sleep last night. Not sure it it's the altitude, the alcohol or the room. I was in thermals but it was cold even with the extra blanket so I put the heater on. I'd been a it sceptical about it as it smelt like burning but I got desperate and it turned out ok. I didn't start a fire so things worked out for me. We didn't have to leave until 830 but I woke up 545 so I got up showered had breakfast and used Internet till we could go. We were told we would be picked up in Peru limousines. When we walked around the side of hotel we had tuk tuks waiting for us but pedal ones not motor bike ones like in Nauta. Andreas said it's time ... read more

Today breakfast 730 leaving at 8. We still had our private bus so that was really good. The drive to Puno was 6-7 hours and we stopped every 2 - 2 1/2 hours for toilet and snack breaks. We did see some flamingoes on a lake however were on a bridge so unable to stop for photos. Andreas said there is usually more of them around. Most of Puno housing was pretty ugly but the plaza and shopping street seemed quite nice and it was big and felt safe. We dropped our bags at the hotel and headed for lunch. The room keys here were really cute. Little Spanish ladies stuffed dolls in dresses and you have to lift the dress to find your room number written underneath. My room was up 5 flights of stairs. ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa » Colca Canyon June 3rd 2016

Breakfast 630 depart 7. Basic breakfast bread butter a bit of ham and some plastic cheese. We drove a little over an hour to get to the condor viewing spot. On the way we drove through a village which and a few lookouts but were told we would stop on the way back. Before arriving at the view point we stopped on side of road for some pictures as a condor was eating a cow. Condors live off dead animals - they don't attack like eagles. The condors work with the foxes. Condors signal where the food is by flying in circles and the foxes come in to kill. The fox eats first and the condor scavenges off the left overs. However livestock in the area also fall over the edge of the mountains sometimes and ... read more

Today up 415 for a 5 am departure. The hotel packed us a small breakfast with a sandwich fruit water bottle and biscuits. Had a nap on the bus before our first stop where we ate. We were warned it was cold. It was more the cold it was freezing. I wore a tank, long sleeve Tshirt, fleece and my down jacket and it was still horrifically cold. Everyone went crazy buying beanies, scarves, gloves, socks and leg warmers from a lady who had a stall set up. As we were there super early only one was open and got all the business. One other poor lady was still trying to set up when we left so missed a lot of sales. We tried Inca Tea which helps with the altitude. I wasn't going to buy ... read more

I felt as if I was tossing and turning all night but I must have managed at least 3-4 hours sleep as one of the few times I woke up the sun was starting to rise and it was just before 6 am and I felt good and not tired at all. We got our bags and jumped on a bus to our hotel. We were told we would have same bus driver aka private for the next few days so that makes it a lot easier and more comfortable. It was a full size bus too so most of us were able to have a row to ourselves to stretch out and keep all the stuff we keep accumulating, Andreas did the best he could to try get our rooms ready in time and we ... read more

Woke up 7 feeling much better. I went downstairs and had a light breakfast and got my bags sorted. At 9 we met in lobby to go to Nazca lines. I think all but 4 choose to do it. We were put in a van and driven to the airport with instructions on meeting a lady when we got there. We checked in, weighed in and were divided into groups. My group Went first. It was a really small plane. Even smaller than the African one. It only held 6 passengers and 2 pilots. The Pilot took photos of us outside the plane then we piled in and off we went. Such a small plane I was even told to close and lock the door myself. At the first Nazca line right away I could tell ... read more

Not my best day today. Woke up feeling pretty Ill as in wanting to vomit. Not sure if it was the bus food or the ceviche or I'm just sick but definitely not feeling great. Thank god I did not drink lasts night and it is not self inflicted. I had a little vomit. This is the first time I travelled without any anti nausea meds so that sucks as it is such a big day today too. Breakfast was 15 soles. Considering not sure I could stomach it I decided to skip and just eat some biscuits I had in my backpack. First up today was an optional boat trip to ballestas islands which I think everyone signed up for. I took a sea sick tablet before I went and thank god I did. The ... read more

My new tour starts today. Unsure to be excited or depressed. Peru is such a large and incredible country. So much variety of what I will see on this next part of the tour. I met the guide Andreas downstairs and he did a quick run through of what I missed last night. He didn't go in as much details as he did the group meeting as he said he gets the group to meet every night before dinner and then runs through the following days plans - what it involves, meeting and travel times, what to take etc. He said its easier to do it that way so everyone remembers and is informed. So rather than overloading me now just touched base and was there to answer any questions I may have. He said he ... read more

Devastating to wake up and get off the boat today. I woke up about 615 and breakfast was at 700. It was docked in the shipping port so some pretty ugly views to end our last day on the boat. We had to put our bags outside our room before breakfast so the crew could start loading the skiff and bus. After breakfast we chilled on deck one last time. So sad. The girls just wanted to get off to get the goodbyes to crew over and done with. We air dropped each other photos from the trip. It's so good and easy to share pictures. Emily's dad had organised a sheet with everyone's emails so we took photos of that too to stay in contact. Alinson took us all out on the skiff to shore. ... read more
