One day and several trains later we arrived in Dijon, France. Corb's cousin Anna and her husband Paul are living there at the moment as funnily enough, Paul makes the mustard the town is known for! They have just had the cutest wee girl Grace and so it was a perfect time to catch up and meet the newest addition to the family. They too have a cool apartment literally right across from the Notre Dame Cathedral. Unfortunately there were some troubles with the plumbing and so waste water was thrown out the window (for that true French village experience) and dishwashing was done in the bathroom sink. It was a bit chaotic. Little Grace made up for all the madness by being the cutest little button ever. We spent pretty much all our time hanging ... read more

Europe » Germany » Baden-Württemberg » Heidelberg September 27th 2006

Waving a sad goodbye to the Wiesn we headed to the station and caught ourselves a train to Heidelberg. We were met at the station by Michael and walked back to their flat where we caught up with Hanna - it was so great to see them again. Their flat is really cool. It's pretty spacious by European standards and has a nice garden and a friendly neighbouring cat called Kea who drops in for visits now and then. They have decorated the whole place with photos and souveneirs of their travels which looks really cool, and which made us really excited that we are heading back to Asia again soon. By day we explored town. We climbed up to the castle for great views through the fog and mist to the town and river below ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Munich September 25th 2006

After one last family breakfast (mmm nutella) we headed to the station for our train to Germany. Since we didn't have to meet our friends in Heidelberg until the evening when they finished work, we decided to meet the guys for ein paar mass at the Wiesn and some general hilarity before moving on. It was great. We'd text Gkee before leaving Salzburg and he'd got the message, so at a few minutes past half past twelves the guys strolled up, Gkee looking a little worse for wear after a hard first night. This time we chose the Hacker-Pschorr Tent with the clouds, though unfortunately the beer wasnt so good and we got the tourist treatment which was notably different from that of our day with the almost locals. We had a great couple of hours ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Munich September 24th 2006

So after a lazy breakfast on the terrace we packed up and headed off to Munich for Oktoberfest. The traffic was again not so good so we took a slight detour through some charming Bavarian villages, though we did manage to get up to 160km or so on the autobahn (I have heard rumours of some family members being snapped doing up to 240kph!). Arriving and finding a sweet parking spot we wandered the last ten minutes, seeing all the horses with their carriages of beer along the way. First of all we talk a walk around the whole grounds, checking out all the tents for their atmosphere. The place was PACKED, and the inside of the tents was just so cool. They are more like giant showrooms than tents and the decorations are really cool, ... read more

Europe » Austria » Salzburg » Salzburg September 23rd 2006

Back in Salzburg it was more of last weekend's fun: so we spent the evening at the festival in town, drinking beer and sekt and checking out all the locals in the lederhosen. We then headed up to the 'Sky Bar' with Christoph and Claudia where we had cocktails and gazed out at the Festung and old town by night, it was really pretty and a good time. Saturday was more family festivities; this time in Upper Austria with 3 more of my grandmother's half sisters and their husbands. Traffic wasn't so good so we drove through Germany, crazy! Lunch was a traditional one at an inn under the trees. It was a special place for the family as two of the sisters met their husbands here when they were waitresses while their mother ran the ... read more

Europe » Austria » Carinthia September 22nd 2006

All my fears were completely well founded! We spent almost 5 days up in Spittal and pretty much all we did was eat, drink, and speak bad attempts at the local dialect of German, or 'mit hand und fuß' as my grandmother's step sister Gertie would say. We did manage to get out and visit some of the nearby villages such as Kaning, where my grandmother was born, the very cute St Oswald and Bad Kleinkirchheim where we had lunch and visit the family graves, and the beautiful Millstättersee which shimmered in the sunlight as we drove by. The landscape is wonderful - the hills are steep and green, the houses adorned with flowers, and the roads narrow and windy, barely fitting on the hillsides. The family were typically crazy, full of life, and lovers of ... read more

Europe » Austria » Salzburg » Salzburg September 17th 2006

Our day with the family in Salzburg was great and full of food. We started with breakfast on the terrace of the fluffy cats, admiring the beautiful countryside all around with the green, green fields that stretched on forever and the tree covered hills that headed skyward. There were even a couple of highland cows to entertain us. We met up with the rest of the relatives and headed to a hillside inn just out of Elsbethen for lunch. It had wonderful views over the city and surrounding areas, but not so wonderful singers of folk music. Thankfully the food was fantastic and we tried more of the local grub: blutwurst, sauerkraut, cheeseypasta stuff, strudel, topfenstrudel, straum... it just kept coming. Spent the afternoon exploring the Festung, the Fortress above Salzburg and getting a brief history ... read more

Europe » Austria » Upper Austria » Linz September 16th 2006

So we had one brief afternoon to check out Linz before we had to catch our connecting train down to Salzburg to meet up with the family. It all went rather well considering our lack of German and after hooking up our onward tickets and storing our stuff we headed off into town to the Lentos Kunst Museum. It was pretty cool and had some neat sculpture exhibitions but unfortunately the top floor was closed and so we missed some of the stuff I had hoped to see. Lunch was a picnic on the banks of the Danube where we clambered about the metal sculptures that I think the city is famous for. Then it was across the bridge to the Ars Electronica Center. Everything there is electronic or uses technology in some way. It was ... read more

Europe » Czech Republic September 15th 2006

So today is our last day in the Czech Republic. It has been a fantastic couple of weeks and we will be sad to leave, but we are definitely planning on coming back so it is not too sad. Also tomorrow we go to Salzburg to meet up with my family which is going to be great. Yesterday we arrived and got a room in a very sweet pension. The room is extra cute though not exactly to Corb's taste - it's all floral and lacey with paintings and a brightly filled window box of flowers. It overlooks the river and the park so we can watch all the locals all out walking their puppies and see the trees as their leaves turn orange - very pretty (They also serve a huge and very tasty breakfast ... read more

Europe » Czech Republic » South Bohemian Region » Cesky Krumlov September 13th 2006

Cesky Krumlov is a cute little place that sits nestled in the bends of the Vltava River in a valley in Bohemia. Overrun with package tourists by day, in the evening its quiet apart from the Cathedral bells which chime the hour, and has a nice laid back charm to it. The huge castle which dominates the cliff above town is awesome. From its tower you have perfect views over the old town and into the hills beyond. The castle itself is a series of ornate courtyards and some elaborate gardens which you can walk through without paying a cent. We chose to pay and took Tour Number 1 through some of the most impressive rooms of the castle. We saw the dining and bedrooms of the different eras and ruling families as well as the ... read more
