Our next method of transport was a Sawngthaew, or truck with benches in the back. Sounds like a novel way to get around town? We had 6 bumpy hours ahead of us. Surprisingly it wasn't actually that uncomfortable. Did get a bit chilly as we drove through shaded valleys though. The scenery was stunning as we drove through more mountainous jungle today, following the Salween River along the border. About an hour or so out of Mae Sot we passed the Refugee Camps - wooden stilt houses much like those of the hilltribes round here, but in a guarded and barbed wire encircled compound that stretched for miles. The people in this area look different from the local Thais - the women wear colourful fabric as long skirts, have Thanka (a white paint) painted onto their ... read more

Awake nice and early we jumped on board a minivan that set off at breakneck speeds towards Mae Sot, on the border with Myanmar. As we drew closer and closer to the border mountains started to rise up out of the countryside, taking us up to dizzying peaks, and then winding our way to and fro into the valleys below. In Mae Sot we happened upon a REAL HOTEL at backpacker prices and treated ourselves to aircon, satellite TV, a western bathroom with a hot shower, and more side tables than you could dance on. It was great. The uncooked chicken for dinner was less than great, but once we'd had it cooked a second time it was well tasty. Mae Sot had an interesting feel as it is a base for many Western Volunteers who ... read more

Walking along the river as the sun set the sky was coloured all shades of pink, orange and blue. Along the riverbank people walked together, did aerobics (it's called healthy street) and set up their stalls for the evening market. The birds chattered away like a group of gossiping ladies, fillng the night air with their song, and even overpowering the noise of the motorbikes as people returned home after a day out or at work. We decided to head back to the night market by the train station where we had super delicious pineapple and watermelon shakes, followed by some hell tasty bbq chicken hot off the grill and some rice to mop it all up with. Our tummies satiated we returned up the creaky wooden stairs, past the giant elephant, to our quaint little ... read more

Sorry about the quality of the last entry - I was in a queue to board our flight back to Bangkok and since we were travelling with a tour group of Chinese Senior Citizens it was a bit of a bun fight to get on and find seats and thus I was a tad distracted, and then panicky as they opened the doors. Anyhoo, we survived our first budget flight and arrived unscathed and with all our belongings despite all the signs telling us that they took no responsibility for our luggage, especially as the ground staff at Bangkok Airport were known for their frisky fingers. Phew. Bangkok was once again the same but this time we saw "Happy Feet". It was all kinds of cute and had me singing and tapping my toes for days. ... read more

Oops! Just noticed that the chaotic entry I hurriedly wrote whilst queueing for the flight to Bangkok never got uploaded - must have pressed the wrong button as I prepared to shoulder barge the golden oldies to get me a seat! Anyhoo, our few days in Singapore were great, though it was might hot and humid and we were very much glad of our airconditioned room! We spent a whole lot of time wandering up and down Orchard Rd checking everything out, sadly though we are not made of money and don't have 100 porters to carry all our hearts desires so in the end Corb picked up a very cool pair of shoes and I got an iPod. We did make it out to the BrightHills Temple, which was huge and very peaceful, though it ... read more

Rockin up in Singapore for a second time was much easier than the first as we knew exactly where we were and where we were heading and so it was only a short while before we were all sorted and at our hostel. This time we are staying in Chinatown, in an area full of restored old Chinese buildings, and just round the corner from enough food to keep us busy forever - so it's a great place to be. After the usual errands such as organising cash and checking the net we called up Brenton (and woke him up, oops!) and arranged to meet later that evening. Later came around and three of us began what was to become a really laid back and enjoyable evening. We started with satay in Smith St, then progressed ... read more

The bus down from KL was hot and long, but apart from that Melaka was all kinds of wonderful! Showing up mid afternoon we caught the bus into town, the familiar sights guiding us once we jumped off the bus and headed over the bridge into the Old Chinatown area. We decided to get a room at the Sama Sama Guesthouse, a 300 year old plus Chinese house filled with plants and lazy cats. The owners are a friendly Malay guy and his eccentric Swiss German wife, but they make the place totally liveable, and the cute decorations make it all very homely. We were lucky as just after we'd got inside the heavens opened and all hell broke loose. Water cascaded down everywhere, and the central courtyard was like an outdoor shower on full pressure. ... read more

Having not being able to buy or carry much over the last 9.5months as we travelled, now that we are getting to the end of the trip it is time to shop! With the knowledge that our last few days will be in Bangkok to pick up a few last minute bargains we had decided to head south to KL and Singapore to begin the shopping mission. Getting a room in KL proved trickier than last time we were here as prices have gone up significantly since then, and everything is much more pricy than we had experienced in Penang. We wanted to stay fairly centrally so that we could walk to and from all the areas we had planned to visit for our shopping and just places we had enjoyed visiting last time. Our room ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Penang » George Town November 14th 2006

So from Thailand we busted over the border with our sneaky bananas to Malaysia. Right away all our memories came flooding back and, despite a few changes, the place looked pretty much the same. We quickly found ourselves a bed and set out in search of the food Penang is so famous for. We didn't have to look far. In fact the only way to avoid the fantastic food of Penang was to stay in our room, and that wasn't something we were up for so there was a lot of eating fitted into our few precious hours in town. We started with the classic Hainese Chicken Rice, and our plate was deemed by Corb to be the best he'd tasted. Hard to beat such a strong first meal, we had some mighty fine curry mee, ... read more

From Phuket we headed Northwards and around the bay to Phang-Nga. A tiny little town surrounded by limestone mountains and palm trees, it's a very cute little place, the highlight of which is a trip out on Ao Phang Nga (Phang Nga Bay). We took an afternoon jaunt in a longtail boat through the mangrove swamps, through caves and past little limestone islands that cover the bay. It was beautiful, one of the most impressive places we have visited in Thailand. After spending a few hours out on the water we stopped at Koh Tapu (James Bond Island) where The Man with The Golden Gun was filmed. It's tacky and filled with tourists, but the caves and bays nearby are quietly stunning. Avoiding a storm out at sea we headed back to Koh Panyee, a Muslim ... read more
