South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires April 26th 2009

And so we found our way to El Sol, a very friendly hostel on the edge of the Recoleta district and our home for the week. Once settled we followed the advice of the hostel owner, Paul, and headed out to La Cholita for the Bife de Lomo and Bife de Chorizo with a wee drink. Ahhhh BA. We loved it already. Our first day in BA dawned bright and sunny, if a little crisp, and we set off exploring the city, waylaid only by pastries and coffee while admiring the National Congress Building. We then walked the famous streets of the city, and braved crossing the Avenida 9 de Julio (ok there are pedestrian crossing with lights but there are still lots of cars). We pretty much walked all day, checking out shopping centres along ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires April 19th 2009

From Uyuni we had some very unpleasant bus experiences as we bounced our way south and a little sideways and then south again to the border with Argentina. As Caitlin counted the hours to the next bathroom and the number of Bolivian buses left I mourned the Bolivian vineyards we were not able to visit, but then tried some Bolivian wine and decided it wasn´t much of a loss. From the border we jumped on another bus. An Argentinian bus. And Caitlin smiled. And then she went to the bathroom. And then we wound our way through crazy coloured valleys, past the Quebrada de Humahuaca and countless cute little villages to the city of San Salvador de Jujuy. And we were back. Thus there was icecream. Ahhh dulce de leche. Unfortunately the hostel with a pool ... read more

We woke early to sunshine and the sounds of the army performing the dawn drill on the edge of the salt plains in Uyuni. Having heard about the wonders of Minuteman Pizza we made a beeline for their homemade granola and smoothies = best breakfast of the trip so far! We headed off in our little 4WD with a driver who said very little, two inquisitive old Germans and two hilarious guys from San Francisco. First stop was Colchani and the salt museum... we road a salt llama! We then clambered over salt mountains and visited one of the famous salt hotels where I was stampeded by a baby vicuña before heading of to the cacti filled wonderland of La Isla de los Pescadores for lunch. Then the fun bit began. Along with Gemma & Greg ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Potosi April 12th 2009

We arrived in Potosí on Good Friday after a relatively short bus ride to be confronted by a rather large hill. Wandering up it we managed to find our way to our chosen accomodation (Hostal La Casona, stay there, the showers are choice!) just in time to avoid the afternoon rain shower. First stop: La Plata for a beer. We tried the local Pilsner. Caitlin was convinced they´d thrown in some mine dust to make it authentic. A little disappointed we headed to La Casona (not affiliated with the hostel) and some how ended up with a rather large jug of Caipirinha :) And some tasty felafel. And then we headed back to our hostel for a good night´s sleep. Or so we thought. A group of 5 descended onto our dorm just as we´d lay ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Chuquisaca Department » Sucre April 10th 2009

I don´t think I have ever felt so relieved to get off a bus. Ok maybe, but never one that was supposed to be so short and straightforward. Anyhoodle, we picked up our bags and headed for the nearest HI hostel (expensive yet clean..) for a quick reshuffle and then it was off to explore Sucre. It rained, so we breakfasted at the first place that was open. Bellies full we visited La Casa de la Libertad and learnt all about Bolivian, and Latin American independence. We also saw some very cool furniture. Oh, and we found several chocolate boutqiues and tasted their wares. We explored the plaza, but were still hungry, so headed for an early lunch at Joyride. I heart their hot chocolate. Post lunch we hiked up the somewhat steep hill to La ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Chuquisaca Department » Sucre April 10th 2009

So, having been tricked by fate and the swarky ladies at the bus station, we were now holding two very expensive tickets on the last bus out of Cochabamba, eagerly awaiting departure. And waiting. And waiting. Finally we set off. Only stop for a meal break 25 minutes down the road. Then everyone piled back on, complete with chicken, gravy and god knows what else, as we bumped our way along. Caitlin and I were sooo lucky. We had the middle seats in the back row. Our seats weren´t even level. My ass was numb before we left the bus station. Caitlin was lucky. Her seat neighbour was a 13 year old who had a wee crush. He spent the night staring, giggling and cuddling up to my curly haired friend. Oh how we love bus ... read more

Checking into our hostel in Cochabamba we barely had time to take off our packs before we were off out the door in search of icecream. We had read of an icecream parlour named Dumbo and made a beeline for it. Feeling we should have dinner before desert this time we stopped at a roadside vendor for a burger and fries. And Caitlin added what she thought was guacamole, oops! Upon finding Dumbo we found a lot more than we had bargained for: a series of icecream and cake parlours in a row, all begging to fill our tummies. We started with Dumbo: dulce de leche & snickers flavour for me, oh yeah! Day 2, breakfast: Cristal for chocolate cake & a strawberry and yoghurt shake (fruit = healthy). Then we got a dose of culture ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz April 6th 2009

From Copacabana we headed for La Paz. As we wound our way away from the lake... well actually we didn´t as it appears to be everywhere. Eventually we arrived at the lakeshore again only to be herded off our bus onto a small ferry whilst the bus bobbed across on a barge... only in Bolivia. Once in La Paz we were mesmerized by the size of the place, and the smell of the markets as our hungry bellies rumbled. It had been many an hour since our lunch in Copacabana. Unfortunately all of our hostel choices were full and so we trundled about eagerly searching for a place until one was found, complete with resident pigeons and a pair of wellies on the windowsill. And so our tummies dragged us out into the night where we ... read more

From Cusco we climbed up and up and up until we crossed the border (one small incident with a money changer) and entered Bolivia. A night in Copacabana was chilly, but a lovely view of sunset over Lake Titicaca over a bottle of La Paz Pilsener was our reward for the journey. A sunny Saturday presented itself and off we set along the lakeshore, between villages, beside fishermen, through forests, up and down hills until a little old man named Javier offered to take us across the lake in his wee boat to the Isla del Sol. We had a slight altercation when he tried to pull a swifty on us ( I can eavesdrop in Spanish, yes!) and then we were deposited at the far end of the island, a tower of rocks above us. ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu April 1st 2009

Sleep did not come easy on the night of March 27th. Getting out of bed in the cold and the dark was even harder as our heads spun and tummies cramped. Alas, we are hardy folk and so set off into the night to start our 5 day trek to Machu Picchu. Arriving in the village of Mollepata we had a light breakfast and met our crew. Us (of course), Matt & Anna (South of London), Darren (Wales), Ivana (Buenos Aires), George (Hungary), Mandee (Invercargill, but we´ll say Perth) and our ever-chirpy guide Enrique. Day one was tough as we battled with the lurgee but the scenery was spectacular as we wound our way round mountains, looking down on villages way below us and up towards snow capped mountains in the distance. Camp 1 was at ... read more
