When I am travelling I have two basic concerns: one is not getting sick, and the other is not getting into any trouble and / or having an accident that would cause us to return home sooner than planned. On Preventing Sickness : Pray to the Gods as loudly as you can, as many times as you can, and to as many Gods you can possibly remember so they will not bestow upon you the wretched curse of diarrhea! One prayer that had worked for me on our last trip went something like this: "0 almighty God, spare me from the curse." Beverly, my lovely wife, forgot to pray to the Gods and paid the nasty price last year in India. I think she now pretends to pray for forgiveness and makes promises to the Gods ... read more

The air distance from Yangon, Myanmar to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is 1,023 kilometres. We were able to buy airline tickets for $23 per person. After all additional baggage fees, surcharges, and taxes were added in, the grand total still came to only $65 each. Go figure. In past years we have passed through Kuala Lumpur several times. I spent one day years ago passing through by train when travelling with Tanner, and was not left with any particularly good impressions then, and Stan and I have since landed at the KL airport terminal on at least four occasions to wait for connecting flights. We decided this time to make a point of visiting this city. What an excellent decision that was. We spent five days exploring, and have both come to the conclusion that of all ... read more

Arriving in the early morning after a twelve hour overnight bus ride from Inle Lake, and catching an evening flight out the next day to Kuala Lumpur, we had very little time to spend in this city and get to understand or appreciate it. During our short time here, we happened to witness a dragon dance on the street, in celebration of the Chinese New Year, and made a point of visiting the Shwe Dagon temple at sunset, which was definitely worthwhile. We expected to see one massive temple covered in Gold Leaf which is particularly stellar when the setting sun and the night lights shine on it. We did not expect to see an array of smaller temples ornately decorated in gold and glass surrounding the large pagoda. So even though we were feeling somewhat ... read more

We took an eight hour bus overland from Bagan to Nyaungshwe and Inle Lake, which gave us more opportunities to see the rugged, mountainous terrain of Myanmar, and glimpses into Burmese culture. Inle lake will undoubtedly go down as the most beautiful place we visited in Myanmar. It is a huge lake which has numerous inlets on which communities have lived, and continue to live, as they had for generations. The streets are waterways, where all transportation is by boat. We passed children boating to school, and mothers paddling to pick up their children after school; vendors selling their wares on the waterways, and workers going about their day to day tasks, along with many taxis transporting tourists like ourselves. It is the land of houses built on stilts, to adapt to the water levels that ... read more

We made our way from Mandalay to Bagan winding down the Irawaddy River for twelve hours on a triple decker river boat. It wasn't a luxury liner, but it was clean, comfortable, and more than adequate, with a cafeteria, airplane style seating area, and three sun decks. But what made this trip ever memorable for me, and many others on the boat as well, I believe, was, once again, the music experience. I believe I already mentioned in my previous entry that Stan is the best music manager ever. Well, he did it again. Early on the trip, while chatting it up with some of the other travellers, he met a professional musician from Germany, and suggested that he should play a few tunes with his wife. Shortly after, both myself and my travelling guitar Ramblin' ... read more

When we arrived into Mandalay from Bangkok, its tiny airport reminded me a little of Regina's airport years ago, before any of its renovations. Hot, dusty, dry, and impoverished, the city itself felt a little desolate, at least at first, before we rented bicycles and toured around. When we did, we noticed immediately the vibrancy of its people, particularly when we went through the market areas. Without a doubt, a favorite memory for us will be the "music caravan" experience. The music caravan consisted of three trolleys of very old school stereo music equipment - huge speakers, CD players, microphones, and such - which were being pushed through the streets by at least a half dozen men. One of the men - the singer - was singing a Burmese tune in Kareoke style - to a ... read more

Friends of ours from Canada were vacationing at Jomtien Beach, a beachside resort suburb of the city of Pattaya, just two hours south of Bangkok, so we decided to take a detour en route to Myanmar and spend a few days enjoying the sun and experiencing briefly the lifestyle of luxury condo living, while visiting with friends from back home. This was not real hard to take. How could a sixteenth floor, beautifully furnished, one bedroom suite with a view of the ocean be anything but? Lounging around the pool or taking in the beachside restaurants and night life was not bad either. The beach was okay, but far busier and crowded than beaches we generally gravitate toward. All in all, it was nice to get an idea of what condo lifestyle in Thailand could be ... read more

My last travel entry, written just before we left home for Bangkok, definitely carried undertones of concern about arriving in Bangkok, the vibrant city we have come to love in our previous travels, being a little worried that it would be consumed by the political tensions and protests that were highlighted daily in the media reports. These fears were dispelled immediately. We had easy transport to our hotel, as no roadblocks were in effect after midnight when we arrived - but we did speak with other travellers later who had experienced some traffic delays due to protestors' route closures. The protest march we observed in our neighbourhood was peaceful - although we avoided the huge rallies - but we did ride the sky trains directly over the protests in the daytime and all seemed peaceful. We ... read more

Adventurous travel is not easy. If it were, it wouldn't be an adventure, it would be a vacation. We'd like to believe that we are adventurers and problem solvers, not vacationers. What we seek in travel is to meet people from other cultures; to develop more understanding, patience, and compassion; to better appreciate the many choices we have had in our lives; and to continually seek ways to somehow give back. Along the way, we have the privilege of seeing sights and sharing experiences that most people only dream of, as we are, after all, dreamchasers. It is exciting, it is amazing, and it is humbling, but it is not always easy. I will admit I have become complacent in the last few months - relishing for the first time in as long as I can ... read more

A few years ago there had been a very clever advertisement directed at travellers who have completed their careers, and finished raising their families, but have not in the process lost their youthful spirit of adventure, and are now set to pick up where they left off - way back when they had no responsibilities - and continue their global wandering. It featured a plane taking off into the sunset and was accompanied by the caption "Remember when the kids wanted to run away from home?" We thought about finding that image and posting it on this final blog entry, but decided instead to use one of our own photos, captured as we flew our own skies, into the new sunsets and sunrises that await us. And we are not running away from anything. Instead, we ... read more
