I have been diligently studying Spanish for several weeks, attempting to prepare for this upcoming dive into the culture of Latin America. It is a dream that has been on my wish list for a lifetime, finally to be realized. Our travels will begin in the city of the tango, where we will spend two weeks exploring the rich culture of Buenos Aires. While in Argentina we hope to make a trip to Iguazu Falls, deemed to be one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world, venturing briefly into Brazil as well. Then we will make our way to Peru, where we will spend the duration of our time exploring Lima and Cusco, before embarking upon a four day hike to the spiritual odyssey that is Machu Pichu (well, one of us at least). And finally, we will spend several days exploring the ecological diversity that is the Peruvian Amazon rainforest, traveling by boat from Puerto Muldonado.
Our time in Peru will be even more special for us, as it is there that we will be meeting our son Tanner and his partner Annie, whom we have not seen in over a year. They have been traveling pretty much since we last saw them, driving their motorbikes all the way from Canada, through the US and Central America, then flying them to Columbia from Panama to resume their epic road trip which will take them ultimately to the end of the Trans-American highway and the Antarctic. Now that is another whole definition of “epic” that we won’t be taking on, but we are very much in awe of their tenacity and adventurous spirits. Stan’s sister from Canada will also be joining us in Peru to experience the four day Machu Pichu trail, all eight decades of her an inspiration to welcome challenge and respectfully but firmly defy age stereotypes.
Although only visiting three countries over the seven weeks that we shall be in South America, we are anticipating that the diversity of our itinerary will indeed make for an epic adventure, particularly because this will be our first time setting foot on the Latin American continent. No familiar territory anywhere. We shall try to embrace it all with a beginner's mind, which always allows for the broadest perspective. Thank you for your interest in our travels.
