The journey from Srinagar, Kashmir, to Dharamsala was a two day taxi ride which we shared with a couple of Italian women we met. To say it was an exciting journey would be an understatement. We lucked out with a driver who seriously could take a place on the Indiana Five Hundred race team. The first day of travel was a solid nine hours of two lane, winding, mountainous road at ridiculously high altitudes that was constant bumper-to-bumper traffic. And we are not talking mostly tourists, for the majority of traffic was large trucks and army vehicles. He passed them all, but was so smooth that we were not expecting to die at any moment. Either that, or the dance-with-death drop to the bottomless valley below was such a constant that it was pointless to worry ... read more

We knew as soon as we stepped off the plane in Srinagar, Kashmir, that this was going to be a different type of adventure. Our first clue was the very apparent military presence everywhere. All those soldiers sporting machine guns were just a tad bit intimidating; at least until they returned your smile. Then there was the equally obvious abundance of men everywhere, and noticeable absence of women, this being a predominantly Muslim culture. It's a good thing we were greeted at the airport by a friendly guy who took us directly to our pre-booked accommodation with the Amina Group of Houseboats on Dal Lake, the beautiful lake that borders the city of Srinagar. We were invited to stay at this particular houseboat by Mana Jugoo, one of its owners, a very friendly man we had ... read more

I remember at one point back home, in the early stages of planning this trip, I had wanted to avoid Mumbai altogether, thinking it would be too much hassle trying to navigate one of the world's largest cities, with a population of twenty two million plus. I was so wrong, and I am so glad we came here. Without a doubt, we lucked out with our hotel selection in the heart of Mumbai, one block away from the Gates of India, the famous Taj Mahal Hotel, and walking distance or a short ride away from all the major attractions. Situated right on the water, we had a view of the bay from our room, and spent our evenings blissed out by the beauty of all the boats sparkling in the water from the hotel's excellent rooftop ... read more

After our brief time in Alleppey floating down the backwaters of Kerala, we hopped a two hour bus to the city of Kochi, still in the province of Kerala, and stayed in Fort Kochi. Fort Kochi is the oldest port in India, and shares a history of settlement by a variety of invaders, Portuguese, Dutch, and English, all of whom have left their marks in the interesting architecture that still provides so much character today. The narrow, pristine streets, quiet roadways where you really could fearlessly walk or ride a bicycle, and the very laid back vibe of Fort Kochi made you sometimes wonder if you really were in India. We were sorry we only had a couple of days to spend here. Because we thought it would be easy to do from this little town, ... read more

Kerala is a province in India that is characterized by its waterways that have, since forever, served as roadways around which communities were built. These communities still thrive today, so when you take a boat cruise to the backwaters of Kerala, you are not just viewing more beautiful scenery as a tourist. What makes this experience different, and much more special, is that you are viewing life as it still goes on in this very beautiful environment. The boat cruise options are numerous, from luxury houseboats that provide both dining and sleeping accommodations, to quaint little Venice-like Gondolas for two powered by the guy at the back quietly paddling you through the tiniest, most intimate waterways where you get up-close-and-personal glimpses of the people who live, play, and work here. We chose the later, and it ... read more

Ah yes, where we left off, and a word about that midnight train from Pondicherry across the country to Trivandrum. We left our hotel at seven in the evening in a hired taxi who provided us with our first experience of travelling the highways of India by night. We were only on the road for an hour and a half, and we found the experience stimulating and exciting, because there was such a diversity of traffic and people on the road and roadside to watch - including solo bikers to families of four on motor scooters; bicycles with no headlights; and numerous tuk-tuks competing for road space on a two lane highway with countless buses and very large trucks. Having said that, there is little question that night road travel in India is not for the ... read more

Getting to India involved an intense and variety packed day of travel. It began with a half hour tuk tuk ride to the Colombo airport at 7 a.m., where we eventually boarded a 70 minute flight to Chennai, India, after going through at least four security checks. Once arrived in India, we took a forty minute taxi ride to what we thought would be a bus station for the next leg of our journey. The reality was that we found ourselves dropped off on what seemed like some random busy street, but there was a guy there next to this wicked looking beater of a bus, screaming out the name of the city we were headed to. We were presented with the option of sitting on the street and waiting for a nicer air con bus ... read more

WANT TO LOOSE WEIGHT? 1. Don't join weight Watchers, where you have to count calories and go for those embarrassing weekly weigh ins, only to find that you have been gaining weight, instead of loosing any. Then you have to listen to some smiling Skinny Minnie telling you to count your calories, and try harder this week, cause "We know you can do it!" 2. Don't join Herbal Magic, where you spend thousands of dollars on herbal supplements and prepared meals that you will never cook for yourself once you are off the program and begin gaining your weight back. 3. Don't join a health club. Who in their right mind wants to spend hundreds of dollars on a membership, buy expensive running gear, run for miles and get all smelly, just to find out that ... read more

The second part of our mission in Polonnawara was to visit its ancient city. We rented bikes again for the day, and by 8 a.m. we were on our way. We were not disappointed. Unlike the temples of Anchor Wat in Cambodia, which were created in different time periods by different civilizations and rulers, these ruins really felt like one large city. You could get a sense of the community that had existed here a thousand years ago, which is in amazingly good condition given its age. On our way home, we stopped by a carving factory, where we watched carvers at work, and then were absolutely blown away when we stepped into the warehouse and discovered the vast array of excellent work they had produced. Sculptures, masks, and beautiful, master crafted furniture were all on ... read more

I'd like to say I came away from my hike up Adam's Peak unscathed, but I cannot tell a lie. I have to admit to walking just a tad bit more slowly for the next couple of days, and could not persuade my body to consider another mountain climb so soon, so we altered the plan to visit Sigirya, Sri Lanka's version of Australia's Ayer's Rock, and came instead to Polonnaruwa. Our mission here was twofold: to search for elephants, and to visit the ancient city ruins. On day one, we set up a safari, but it was not going to start until 2 p.m., so we took off on our bicycles in the morning to see the sights around us and engage in more Sri Lanka local culture. While biking along a lake minutes away ... read more
