Condo lifestyle has not been our norm. In fact, we had no such experience prior to visiting friends last January who were condo living in the Pattaya resort suburb of Jomtien Beach. At that time, we did what all tourists to the city of Pattaya do - we made a point of visiting Walking Street, the renowned sex epicentre of Thailand. The experience was analagous to visiting Amsterdam for the first time, and checking out its famous Red Light district. I did not fully realise how much that introduction tainted my perceptions of this city until we returned this year to again visit our friends, and did not include that area of town in our agenda. Instead, we discovered kilometres of paved beach walkway two minutes from our condo, safe and fully lit at night. In ... read more

Canada is amazing, and our prairie hometown of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, is beautiful. In addition to wide open spaces and smiling faces, we have some of the best sunsets in the world, and unlike those tropical sunsets which are indeed stunning, our sunsets are equally dramatic, but last for hours in the summer evenings which also extend long into the night, as we are the land of the midnight sun. The prairie people are amazing and enduring as well, always exceptionally generous and ready to lend a helping hand; they are strong, down to earth people, and are some of the best musicians in the country. That strength of character and sense of community is undoubtedly attributed to the harsh winters we have learned to live with and survive together, where temperatures can dip to 50 ... read more

The Continuing Adventures of The Dreamchasers 2014 followed the Dreamchasers Great Adventure of 2013, which we had agreed was amazing on a number of levels. It wasn't a major worry keeping us up at night, but it did give us a moment of pause when we began this adventure last January, as we wondered how we might follow up "amazing". Our 2014 Adventure has now come to an end. We soon fly west into the never ending sunset, so it is time to once again reflect upon the fifteen highlights of this year's adventure. Then we can better access how we have followed up "amazing". The events are not listed in any order of preference, as that would be just too difficult. They are listed in reverse chronological order, beginning with the most recent experiences, as ... read more

I alluded in the previous entry to spending a lifetime looking for my yoga teacher, my guru, and having finally found what I was looking for. This was not an exaggeration, as I was first introduced to yoga in the early 70's, and Yoga has been a part of my life ever since. In the process I have been exposed to a variety of yoga forms have studied with a number of yoga teachers. However, I have never felt I had found "my guru". I have for years wanted to immerse myself in a yoga course somewhere in the world, but I just could not put it together before. As one who believes that everything happens for a reason, I do not believe it is coincidence that I "happened" to find this particular yoga Shala. And ... read more

As I pointed out in my first Ubud entry, the theme for our 2014 adventure was "Slow Down, You Move Too Fast", and although we covered a lot of new territory throughout Asia and Indonesia on this trip - Myanmar, Kuala Lumpur, Borneo, Lombok, and the Komodo Islands - we have indeed slowed down this past month. Soon after arriving in Ubud, Bali, we rented the studio apartment, as well as two motor scooters, so that we could get to our daily yoga classes. The Yoga Shala ( "Shala" is Sanskrit for "School") is located in a village 30 minutes outside of Ubud, and our two hour classes begin at 8:00 a.m., six days a week. About the same time, I committed to fifteen hours of individual instruction in Indonesian Language study, and have now completed ... read more

2014 has been a rather spectacular year for us, as we have now brought in the New Year for the third time in as many months. On Canadian soil, just prior to departing on this adventure, we celebrated New Year's Eve on December 31st, as per usual. Then, a month later, on February 1st, when we arrived in Kuala Lumpur, we discovered it was the Chinese New Year. The celebrations and decorations were everywhere, as there is a very significant Chinese population in Malaysia, and in particular in Kuala Lumpur. We also learned that the Chinese New Year celebrations go on for exactly fifteen days, so the Chinese New Year was still being celebrated when we arrived in Borneo, Malaysia. And now, on March 30th and 31st, we have had the opportunity to bring in a ... read more

The sub-title for The Continuing Adventures of Dreamchasers 2014 is "Slow Down, You Move Too Fast". Although we have had longer stays in one place during this year's travels than last - at least three of which lasted over a week - we have still done a fair amount of moving around in the past three months, as you will have noticed if you've been travelling with us through our twenty two blog entries. But we have now arrived at our final destination, where we will remain for the next four weeks, having committed to daily yoga classes and a studio apartment that we have rented for the month. We have also rented two scooters, and I, for one, appreciate the practice we had riding on some of the badly rutted roadways in Kuta, Lombok, as ... read more

Unless you are a surfer seeking out the world class breakers of Bali's Ulawatu Beach, Kuta is the most popular beach strip tourist destination in Bali. That is, if you are looking for a location which provides sun, sand, and seaside beach culture, as well as a zillion shopping opportunities from low to very high end, and a full range of spas, restaurants, and bars, all congested together in a strip of land that borders the ocean for more than a few kilometres. Every inch of land space in Kuta, Bali, is developed, and its beaches are similarly covered three umbrellas deep as far as the eye can see. If I could take you back, just for a moment, to recall the family of goats and herd of water buffalo that passed by "my office" at ... read more

We fell in love with the Gilli Islands when we were first introduced to the largest of the three islands, Gilli Trawangan, last year, in May 2013, so it was always in our plans to return to the islands in our 2014 Adventure. This time, however, we decided to acquaint ourselves with another of the islands, Gilli Air. It is the second largest of the three, and the second liveliest as well, Gilli T being renowned as the busiest and most developed. The smallest of the three, Gili Meno, is by far also the quietest, but we have yet to stay there. Gilli Air is a little analogous to that small city that offers all the amenities the larger one does, but is not quite as busy. Like Gilli T, it has a variety of restaurants ... read more

Our five day boat adventure concluded when we were taxied to the doorstep of the Segare Anak Bungalows in Kuta, a seaside community on Lombok's very scenic stretch of southern coastline, famous for its world class surf and stellar white sand beaches. Kuta, Lombok, is not to be confused with the more renowned Kuta, Bali, which is an entirely different, more commercially developed, and very busy experience. Remember what I had said in an earlier blog? Lombok is often referred to as Bali's shy but beautiful sister. That descriptor definitely applies here. Our hotel is situated facing and maybe a hundred metres from the beach. The narrow, one lane beach road directly in front of the hotel, is used primarily by motor scooters and the occasional mini van or taxi, with rare appearances by the odd ... read more
