Alarms went off again at 7.30am which is happening all too often. I think we all had good sleeps though in the cool fresh air of Jackson Hole and we were soon off down to breakfast for the usual continental affair of Frosty Flakes, a muffin, OJ and a couple of slices of toast with jam. We left around 9.30am after we had got everything packed away in the car. Did a refill of the fuel tank, and bought a coffee from the same cafe we went to yesterday next to the Movie Theatre and we were on our way to Salt Lake City in Utah where we have an evening flight to Los Angeles. I had initially planned on taking the 5 hour trip (plus stops) pretty much due south which had a brief period ... read more

Left around 10am, and saw the usual solo buffalo causing havoc again. Went down to see the famous Old Faithful Geyser. A clock at the gift shop told us it was due to go off between 11.50am and 12.10pm so we did some shopping and then watched the geyser do his stuff right on midday (it happens naturally around every 90 mins) and so much better to see natural than the NZ immitation we saw at Roturua. We drove on to the southern exit of Yellowstone National Park and barely saw any wildlife (maybe due to driving in the middle of the day ?). We soon entered another National Park being Teton and stopped at Colter Bay for lunch. As we entered the car park Luke woke up from his sleep and said "look there is ... read more

Well our accommodation is at the 3 Bear Lodge in West Yellowstone, Montana. Our room fronts the main street and it is on the first floor and quite new as the Motel was destroyed by fire in 2009 and only recently rebuilt. Our room has 1 main bedroom, an alcove area where there is a single bed a tiny bed for little bears as well as a main open plan living area with a separate Queen Bed and a large Dining Table, Bathroom. We also had a big outdoor balcony area overlooking the main street. Agreed to have a sleep in today after so much driving and we were not up until 10am, and had breakfast at the 3 Bears Lodge Restaurant around 10.50am (they closed at 11am !). They were super fast cooking our eggs ... read more

Alarms set for 7.30am today but took a while to get everything in motion. Finally had decent wi-fi so caught up on emails, NRL results, Wimbledon, Tour de France and saw Mark Weber won British Formula 1 Grand Prix as well. Kerry went on Facebook to find her sister Julie was still online at 1AM Aussie Time (go to bed Julie !!). Had a basic continental breakfast included and had cereal (Frosty Flakes again !) along with a muffin and Minute Maid OJ. Kerry so kindly sliced half a banana to make it more interesting. It was easy to load the car today as it was parked right out front of our log cabin and we hit the road around 9.30am. Our first stop was going to be across the border into Montana at a place ... read more

Well what an experience to have stayed in this Hotel. The creaking of the floorboards as you walked around the rooms felt like the Hotel was talking to you about it’s old stories. I had my shower in one of those old bath tabs with the fancy legs and curtains hanging around the outside. If felt weird as I had no wall around me but why weird as I don’t usually fall into the walls by habit ! No breakfast included here so we headed next door to the Busy Bee Cafe, which barely had room for us. They took ages to take our order and even longer to serve the meals (how long does it take to cook eggs and hash browns ?) I think it took nearly an hour. I was getting frustrated for ... read more

We got up early with alarms at 7am and had breakfast downstairs and we were packed and ready to leave at 8.30am which was pretty good. Weather was cool and overcast about 18 degrees at best. We decided to head towards Rapid City and visit Bear Country USA. It cost $60- to go in but wow ! was this place special. We did a 30 minute loop on a road circuit. The first 15 minutes we saw a range of animals in individual enclosures that you drove through and the animals were so close and next to the car. When we entered the bear enclosure you had to keep windows closed for obvious reasons and there were more bears than you could throw a stick at (about 200) and mix between Black Bears and Grizzlies. Because ... read more

Kerry and I had the continental breakfast which was pretty ordinary and the kids were a bit late getting up so we ate without them. When they surfaced we took them to nearby Peggy’s for Breakfast where they had some cooked food. We then headed off for some sightseeing. First on the agenda was doing the Iron Mountain Road trip. This road was an engineering masterpiece when it was first built and includes three tunnels where they are perfectly aligned so that when you drive through them you see Mt Rushmore National Monument directly in front of you. Amazing how this was done. Also the road has several pig tail bridges which are really neat to see and something quite different. After that we started the Wildlife Loop Road. This was something I had really been ... read more

Well I had the worst night's sleep on the trip as I used Sofa Bed to let Kerry get a good night's sleep to get over her sniffles. All to no avail, as I was uncomfortable and the stupid glazed window let in too much light. I reckon I only got a few hours sleep and I had to prepare for the long drive to South Dakota ! We were packed and ready to leave Denver by 9.30am as soon as Luke finished watching Serena Williams get through to the Wimbledon Finals again. Mr Tom Tom was loaded with trip plan and I had the Google Maps version on my IPAD as a back up. We have found the IPAD handy as it has a GPS location device so it shows you on the map where ... read more

Bad start with phone alarms going off at 6am (NYC time and forgot to change timezone !!) I did the breaky run as everyone was really feeling tired after all the action so far (was it 4 of 5 trips I had to make downstairs?) Cereal, Bananas, Muffins, OJ & AJ, Hot Chocolate, Toast & Marmalade, Milk, Yoghurts. Being 4th July we had sourced an outlet shopping sale at Castle Rock about 40km south of Denver on the way to Colorado Springs. The road we travelled on was the Interstate # 25 and the weather today was a lot clearer and we could actually just see the Rocky Mountains although there was little snow on the peaks after the heat wave conditions the USA has had for the last 2 weeks. We arrived in Castle Rock ... read more

Alarms go off at 5.45am and I am up and ready to have a quick bowl of cereal, shower then get the gang ready to depart downstairs as we had our scheduled airport transfer booked for 6.30am. He was right on time and we had a big black SUV with lots of space for the 30 minute drive to La Guardia Airport in Queens. No problems checking in our luggage and after quick snack of bacon & egg on a pita bread wrap (I think they called it a Panini) we were soon on our way. Very slow taxiing down the runway as a big queue of planes but we were in the air about 5 minutes after the scheduled 8.45am flight. We had good seats on the plane with extra leg room (about six inches ... read more
