North America January 13th 2011

Woke up by the lovely sound of our mobile phone alarms going off again but must admit I had my best nights sleep as the King Bed is so comfy (I am thinking about sneaking home one of these pillows !). Went down to have our continental breakfast of cereal, and hot chocolate. A few pastry things but a bit rich for me in the morning. Got the internet working which is not free at this place and costs $10- per day. Checked out the specials for Knott’s Berry Farm which I last went to when I was 16 and no-on else knows much about on this trip. They had these specials where you get in for children’s prices if you bring 2 cans of food for the disadvantaged. No problems we headed to the mini-mart ... read more

Well after some nice sleep we awoke around 10.00AM and too late for breakfast. Had a look at our room as did not even notice it when we arrived. We have a 2 room suite with King Bed and lounge in main room with microwave and small fridge. Second room has two queen beds and bathroom. Very comfortable beds and everyone slept really well. So we headed down the street to IHOP which serves breakkie all day long. Eggs on Toast (over easy is the go) with some coffee. Great weather with sunny day and about 24 degrees. We bought a 4 day Disneyland Park Hopper ticket which cost $216- each (I wish they would charge children children’s prices until they are not children any more !). These tickets allow you to leave Disneyland and go ... read more

Well the day started pretty much the same as yesterday. Opened the blinds to see a pile of snow in the courtyard. After breakfast Kerry & I went and had a look outside to see how things looked. A couple of the hotel workers were trying to shovel snow from the driveway to make access better. The roads were still a mess and sidewalks pretty slippery too. I decided that since the MARTA train station was only 50 metres away (just across the road) we should try and catch the train to the CBD which is 5 stops away as we were pretty sure they would have this area cleaned up by now. I first checked on the Internet to find out that the World of Coca-Cola Museum was not opened, then I found out the ... read more

Well what can I say. The snow storm certainly arrived. Looking out the window to the courtyard below looks a lot different than yesterday. About 3-4 inches of snow fell which does not sound like much but believe me it is ! The whole state of Georgia has come to a stand still. It’s not much better in Mississippi or Alabama or even Tennessee. This area does get snow flurries and averages less than one inch of snow for the whole of winter. This is one of heaviest dumps of snow on record here. It’s even snowing in South Carolina on the beach ! To give you a sense, when you head outside there are very few cars driving around on a Monday morning, all the schools are closed, and you cannot tell where the road ... read more

Well I woke to find out it was minus 6 and with wind chill actually minus 15. Decided to head away straight towards Atlanta as a major winter storm was still being predicted to hit the southern states later tonight. Atlanta is famous for a few things being the home of Coca-Cola, host of 1996 Olympic Games and CNN. It also has the largest free standing granite rock in the world known as Stone Mountain. The drive was only about 200km and the skies were mostly overcast. I was amazed at just how many signs we saw for Waffle House along the drive which looks like a dump but must be OK if they have so many outlets. I guess they sell Waffles ! As we approached the Atlanta area we decided to get some lunch ... read more

We are now past the half way point of our travels. Well it was a very cold night and day started with breakfast in our Hotel lobby (scrambled eggs on toast + OJ). We headed out to the car and it was windy and cold. Temperature in the car said it was zero outside and this was about 10AM. We headed to a place called Lookout Mountain which is only a few kms from downtown. First stop was Ruby Falls. I deliberately did not tell the kids anything about this place so they would be surprised. The tour starts by going in an elevator down about 260 feet through limestone to the middle of the mountain. We await a tour guide who then took us deep into the caves seeing various formations along the way to ... read more

The day started pretty late and we missed the breakfast inhouse. We had a couple of yoghurts and bananas with us and finished these and then headed off around 10.15AM. We arrived at Scottsboro Alabama around 11AM and the drive here was a bit different as we were not on an Interstate but driving through various small middle american towns (still dual carriageways so a good road nonetheless). A bit windy today but mostly clear skies and temperature a bit warmer at around 12 degrees. Today was essentially a travelling day to get to Chattanooga which is back in the Southeast corner of Tennessee, but when we researched the journey we realised that Scottsboro was about half way and has a famous attraction called the Unclaimed Baggage Centre. Essentially all of the lost baggage that is ... read more

Weather was fine & clear this morning, and after breakfast in our Hotel we were on our way by around 9.45AM heading into Sweet Home Alabama. Short drive today only about 200km to a place called Huntsville. It’s known as Rocket City as it was here in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s that America’s space programme was based. They have a place called the US Space & Rocket Centre which has more artifacts than they have at Cape Canaveral in Florida where all the launches now take place. We arrived in Huntsville around 12 Noon and decided to have lunch before going to the space centre. We had seen this place called Cracker Barrell about 20 times on this road trip so we thought we’d give it a try. Inside is a gift shop with ... read more

We all slept in and missed the breakfast session which finishes at 9AM. Luke was excited to see some snow flurries outside which were pretty much tiny snowflakes drifting down and they would melt as soon as they hit the ground. By about 10AM it changed to a light drizzle and temperature peaked at about 8 degrees. We then headed to the Adventure & Science Centre which is a modern museum which is interactive and has exhibits about space, water and the environment. It had some really good exhibits and the kids stayed here for 3-4 hours. One of the fun things they did was to to go on this ride which showed what it is like to defy gravity. Lunch was at Subway and we then asked for directions to the nearest Wal-Mart where we ... read more

Had breakfast in the Hotel lobby where we all had made to order eggs for the first time. Sunny side up was the go with some crispy bacon (but not too much !). We got the Hotel shuttle down to the Hilton on 4th Avenue to wait for our tour. We did a tour with Tommy’s Tours. It is a tour of downtown Nashville and then goes out to the Oak Hills area where all the celebrities live. Tommy himself was the driver and he added some comedy to his commentary to make it an excellent adventure. We only found out about it via Trip Advisor where the tour got some excellent reviews. There has been no brochures anywhere about it which probably helps keeps the costs down. The weather was a bit warmer today and ... read more
