Woke up to hear some banging outside and found a crew of construction workers going hard at it trying to take down an air conditioning filtration plant on the rooftop. They were having all sorts of problems and it made for interesting viewing ! Today is another beautiful sunny day and still warm at 25 degrees. I watched TV early and saw Stephen A Smith on the ESPN First Take show describing how Kobe scored 60 points in his final game last night. No wonder there was a big roar !! Later Kerry found another show, this time about some bloke who went on a trip to the Australian outback to meet some indigenous folk who showed him how they eat off the land. He was eating weird food like lily pad stems, turtle necks, wallaby ... read more

Well what a sight Las Vegas is today. There is not a cloud in the sky, light winds and it is a warm 27 degrees. Whilst I was getting ready this morning Kerry was surfing the channels on the massive TV in the living room. It must be a 55-60 inch screen or something like that in a fairly small space. She found a Travel channel and there was a show on where some guy was in Amarillo which is where we were only 4 days ago and he was doing a story about how they make chicken fried steak which is what I had in Branson, Missouri. How odd ! We probably would not have been interested in watching this show had we not tried it. Next he went on a tip to the Big ... read more

Well let’s start by finishing last night’s activities here in Las Vegas. We were having a welcoming drink at the 5 o’clock somewhere bar out the front of the Flamingo Casino which is right next door to the Linq where we are staying. After enjoying a cold beer I wander inside looking for the restrooms. Well they are not easy to find so I have to go deep inside the casino past all the tables and slot machines and finally get there. I find my way out through a different exit of the casino and back on the strip and I am a few hundred metres away from where I left Kerry ! Later she wants to know where they are so I show her the way. Now we are both inside the casino, the air ... read more

Well we had three distinct options on how to start our day. We could either stay in Santa Fe and do either a walking tour (not going to happen !) or an open air trolley tour with narration of the area. Alternatively I had found out about a scenic byway (it is what the Americans call their scenic roads) that we could drive on as we head towards Albuquerque. We decided to discuss over breakfast where we had freshly made waffles laced with maple syrup (very healthy indeed !) along with the best orange juice we have had on this trip to date. We had to walk across the driveway from our unit to the breakfast room and it was chilly at around 10 degrees. Hence option 1 out as we are too tired to keep ... read more

Up around 7.45am and downstairs for our final Marriott Hotel supplied buffet breakfast of this trip. A mix of scramble eggs on muffins, as well as a blueberry muffin and OJ will get me going whilst Kerry just had some cereal. Check out was a breeze and thankfully the luggage all fits in the Chrysler 200 as we did not get a chance to check it out last night. The car is a lot different to drive than the Toyota Camry which travelled 2,977 kilometres from where we started this road trip in Houston 14 days ago ! We finally got away on the road around 9.20am and headed straight out on I40 West towards New Mexico. The landscape was so flat it was amazing. You could look either left or right (although I was mostly ... read more

Ordered breakfast in room and we shared scrambled eggs on toast and a muffin with jam. Thought it was $13.00 but when we checked out there was $3.00 extra for room service fee, $3.20 delivery fee and tax added so not as good a deal as I first thought. Decided not to eat the last 3 pieces of Pizza that we have had in the room for the last two nights (probably a god idea since we have no fridge here !). We left around 9.30am and headed west on I40. First stop was one of the iconic Route 66 diners called Lucille’s at Weatherford where Kerry ordered a coffee for starters and I had a classic strawberry milkshake which was delicious however I need to learn to take my time as brain freeze is not ... read more

After yesterday’s long drive we both felt really tired today. We had bananas and a muesli bar for breakfast and then headed off in our car. We drove about 11km to the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. Whist it was not too far away we actually had to go on 3 separate interstate highways just to get there. Very tricky stuff early in the day navigating these massive interchanges. The museum cost $12.50 each but we had a $2- discount coupon in one of the brochures we picked up yesterday so that helped. When we went in one of the volunteers had a chat with us to explain where to go and he said it would take about 2 hours to go around. The first section was an area of paintings where they show off ... read more

Fine and sunny day as we wake up for what would be a very very long day in the car. It started quite cool around 14 degrees but eventually climbed to 26 degrees. It’s strange here where the maximum temperature in spring time generally occurs around 5pm so it takes a while to warm up every day. We headed north towards Springfield before we started our journey on historic Route 66. I was aware that the original Route 66 went through the South Eastern corner of Kansas, so it was natural to head this way so we could tick off US State # 30. First stop was a town called Galena where we came across an old Ten Pin Bowling alley which has seen better days. We stopped at an old emporium / antique store as ... read more

Up quite late around 9.30 today and my back is improving a lot. As we got upgraded to a suite we will do all the washing today. Cloudy start to the day only about 16 degrees and a sight drizzle around. It is supposed to reach 21 later and get a bit windy but we will see. We went to Farmhouse Restaurant for breakfast at 2PM ! Kerry had 2 Pancakes with Pecans and I had 3 Pancakes with Blueberry. Simply delicious. Then we went to the famous Dicks 5 & Dime souvenir store and got the licence plate for the Bali Hut (and a cake of soap). We were lucky to find the licence plate as we walked up and down every aisle and we got blocked at the end of an aisle by a ... read more

Late start to the day as we finally had a chance for a lay in after 3 weeks away. We have no breakfast included here at the Hilton and started the day with a muffin and banana left over from the previous day. We drove to the Visitors Information Centre (the official one that is, noting there seems to be about 30 visitor’s centres around here !). We had booked tickets to 2 shows here and had to collect our tickets. Whilst we were there we asked for some advice on breakfast and he gave us two suggestions being Billy Gails Café about 15 minutes’ drive away and The Farmhouse Restaurant which is close to where we are staying in Bransons Landing. Since we are already in the car we decide on Billy Gails Café. It ... read more
