Welcome to another edition of the Spanner family travel blog. On this adventure it's just Kerry & Andrew off to the USA where we are doing two separate back to back road trips where will be visiting another 7 new states. I will try and keep it interesting giving you an idea of what we are up to and adding some photos along the way. Feel free to add some comments to the blog at the bottom and if you are sick of hearing them let me know and I will unsubscribe you from the blog updates. Left home in Tweed Heads around 7am and drove the Mitsubishi Station wagon up to Brisbane and realised why I hate city commuting. A few showers when we left but as soon as we crossed the border into Queensland ... read more

No alarm and woke up at 9.30 today. Decided to walk along beachfront looking for breakfast by heading right instead of left this time. Soon came across a couple of restaurants. Went to Ocean Blue and ordered the special for $4.50. For that price I got Bali gold coffee pot, large glass of pineapple juice, scrambled eggs on toast with sausage, tomato, a bowl of fruit mixed with yoghurt and muesli (yummy), and a bread basket which had two slices of different bread, a croissant and a slice of banana bread. Wow what a full load. We then walked up to the next cross street and headed back towards Legian Street. Lots of shops along here and we picked up some items. I even managed to get myself an authentic pair of Billabong thongs for $10- ... read more

Alarms off very early today to get us all up and dressed and off to Breakfast in readiness for our pick up at 8.45am. We thought the easiest thing to do was to have breakfast at the poolside buffet to not waste time. They charged $12- per person and it was pretty normal buffet choice. I had some corn flakes and then a couple of fried eggs as well on toast. The minivan arrived on time to take us to Benoa Harbour for our departure via high speed catamaran to Lembongan Island. The catamaran caters for 150 people but today only about 30 on board. I decided to buy a waterproof bag for my mini camera so I could take some shots of the is whilst snorkelling. I had seen someone use one of these with ... read more

Woke up to find it was raining slightly outside and sky looked pretty threatening. Made me realise I have failed to detail any weather for the trip so far. I can say it has been the same every day. Rather predictable. Overcast with sun trying to peek through every now and then, temps from 25-31 and very humid. If I don’t say anymore, you can presume the weather is unchanged ! Started off the day by dropping off laundry nearby. Only $20-for 7.2kg to be ready for collection tonight. Went to breakfast at a place nearby. Looked cool, as we had to climb into this elevated Bali Hut. Went downhill from there. We were the only people there (WARNING !!!!!). Ordered some drinks. Kerry had cappuccino and I ordered a Latte as were not sure what ... read more

We had Gede arranged as driver for our transport to Legian for $25. A bit worried about whether his car would be OK, but it did fit our luggage in snuggly. Really good having him as we talked about stuff all the way for the hour long trip and he was good at speaking English and had a great personality as well. He told us about how he had a dream to go working on cruise ships like his younger brother but he had an accident (i.e. had a baby, got married and dream ended !). His brother has just returned from Costa Cruises in Europe after being away from family for 8 months and he earns a lot more than they get in Bali and supports his family. Gede has some land near rice patties ... read more

Alarms off at 7.30 for a 8.15 pick up for our Bali Baik Tours. Had the usual fruit platter as well as scrambled eggs for breaky and finished just in time as the tour bus arrived perfectly on time and soon we headed off in a mini van along with another family of 4 from Wollongong of all places !. First stop was the coffee plantation where we sampled a range of coffees and teas. Elise love the Mangoeseen Tea so we bought some. They had this special coffee that they raved about but I did not try it. They have an animal like a possum that is nocturnal and it scoures the ground and eats “only the best coffee beans”. It is unable to digest so they come out with the poo (yuck!). They then ... read more

Alarm set for a wake up call at 6.45 as Luke and I were off on a white water rafting adventure on the Ayung River. Our guide was a guy called Salenko which sounded more like a Lithuanian Basketball player than a Balinese Rafting Guide. Our bus picked us up and we travelled around 30 minutes to get to the place where the rafting starts. We were given our helmets and life jackets and an oar to paddle with and the guy said to Luke off you go down those steps. We were about to venture down the side of a cliff face about 100 metre drop to the river floor. These were no ropes or handrails and most of the steps were pretty big by normal standards. However they were made with concrete and were ... read more

Well I struggled to sleep through the night, and woke up early around 5am I think. I could not resist the temptation to check out the golf progress. No TV coverage but iPad had live scoring so into the toilet I go to check out the progress. Great news Jason Day birdies 3 holes on the back 9 to take the lead, but then gives two of them back. Adam Scott birdies the 18th to take the lead with one group to play. Bugger, Angel Cabrera birdies 18 and we have a play off. Common sense kicks in and I return to bed. Upon awakening Luke says “Dad did you hear about the golf? “ I played it down and asked what happened and he said Adam Scott has won in a playoff. You beauty an ... read more

Well here we go again. Just a short 12 day adventure to Bali for the first time. So we have the convenience of using our local Gold Coast Airport we thought we would try Scoot Airlines which means we actually fly via Singapore. Flight due to leave at 9am, so wake up call was set for 6am and Taxi booked for 7am. I woke up around 5.30 so I got up to see that yesterday's downpour had moved on and the sun was about to rise. First priority was to check that Scoot flight had actually left Singapore which it had but looked like it might arrive half an hour late. Next I had to turn on the TV to see how the Aussies were going in the US Masters Golf. Good news as Jason Day ... read more

Well we had nothing planned for our last day but there was one thing in the back of my mind we might do and that is shopping at the outlets in Citadel. After breaky I make sure they are open, and then arranged a hire car at the Budget place right across the road from our Hotel . It took about 30 minutes to get there and the freeways were flowing OK in our direction anyway. We went to most of the shops here but Luke was looking for an NBA jersey and they had none at all. What !!! I actually thought this place was of less quality than what we found in Denver and certainly not up to the Las Vegas standards we have seen before. We finally ask someone where we can get ... read more
