Breakfast was a bit later today around 9.30am as we had a shorter day of travel to navigate. I had two fried eggs sunny side up with bacon and sourdough bread. Kerry had Granola with yoghurt and some fresh fruit. We left the “Courtyard” Marriott around 10.30am. It was an excellent hotel chain part of the Marriott group we have not been to before and I took a few souvenir pens along with me (as I do !). We then headed to Columbia which is the state capitol of South Carolina. We were hoping to do a tour of the State House where government sit. We arrived around 11.45am and the gardens around the building were beautiful. We saw scores of young children around we were concerned about not having booked anything. We took a few ... read more

Let me start today by apologising for anyone who tried to view my YouTube clip from yesterdays blog. It has now been fixed so lease go back and try again. Breakfast served and prepared by our host Scott. We were joined by the other guests were one family of 2 young girls and their grandmas from Nth Carolina. They asked us I we would join them in saying grace which was a first for us. We had a good talk about politics. Scott served us fresh fruit being raspberries, rock melon and strawberries. This was followed by pancakes with a beautiful homemade syrup with diced apples. Washed down with homemade apple juice was excellent. Unlike the B & B in Savannah where it was all over in 30 minutes, here we kept talking for an hour ... read more

Weather was perfect started around 15 degrees and increased to about 23. Not a cloud in the sky. Got up early around 7am and had small breakfast of Special K with berries, strawberry greek yoghurt a banana and OJ. Left around 8.30am and we headed off on route 526 and then route 17 on our way to Wilmington, North Carolina. Still not totally used to Mr. Tom Tom. It does give clear directions but I like to see the overview of the route being taken as this morning it seemed to be taking a slightly route different to the one I envisaged. Nothing major as we just used the Google Maps on Kerry’s new smart phone to show the route and make sure we did not get lost ! 292 km total driving today for around ... read more

We had the usual buffet fare for breakfast and then headed into downtown Charleston across the Ashley River bridge. We had a walking tour booked with Tommy Dew starting at 11am so we had a little bit of time to kill so we headed south towards the end of the peninsula and Murray Boulevard where the quality of homes overlooking Charleston Harbour were amazing. Just house after house was in immaculate condition with beautiful gardens. We would find out later these homes whilst looking old are in the newer section of town built on reclaimed land but still over 100 years old. We got to the area known as The Battery that looks out to the Atlantic Ocean where you can see the famous Fort Sumter and headed up East Bay Street where the buildings just ... read more

Went to be quite late night last night trying to get the travel blog updated but slept right through until alarm went off at 7.15am. Went downstairs for breakfast at 8.30am where Sabrina organized another beautiful treat. We had french toast with layers of berries and a dollop of cream, an apple & nut cake, and some fresh fruit. The guests we met the previous morning staying at this B & B had all left and there were three other groups who were all from the Orlando region of Florida. We had already packed the car before breakfast so we were right to go straight away around 9am. We had considered driving to Charleston via Beaufort for a more scenic experience and when I discussed this with Sabrina she said it would be a good idea, ... read more

Had a good night sleep in our big 4 post bed (almost needed a ladder to climb into it). Had breakfast downstairs in the dining room with 2 other couples who were from Orlando and another couple from Charlotte. They had been here for a while and were going home today (Sunday). They served us eggs florentine which looked like a quiche, a muffin, croissant and OJ and a raspberry type of desert. All pretty good. The weather started cloudy with a slight shower and pretty cool around 16 degrees, so we decided to use the car for a drive around Savannah’s Historical District. Kerry kept popping out for a photo as we slowly drove around. The best spots were the beautiful homes on Jones Street. We stopped for a coffee at the same café we ... read more

Up nice and early around 7.30am and got the bags all packed up again, and headed downstairs for breakfast before we made the walk up Peachtree Street to the Hertz Depot to pick up our hire car. I had charged Mr. Tom Tom that Bruce had kindly lent me but I was getting concerned as I could not switch it over to US Maps (it was still on Australian maps). I figured it was because we were indoors so I took it with me as we walked to the Hertz depot hoping it would spring to life. It did not ! OMG how am I going to find my way around now ? Anyway we got to the Hertz depot and I showed him the printout of my reservation and I could not believe it but ... read more

Alarms were set for 7am as we had to get to our first booked tour. We have a cooked breakfast buffet at the Best Western Plus which was pretty reasonable selection and everything was pretty fresh. I had Scrambled Eggs on toast with a sausage shaped like beef patty, blueberry yoghurt, muffin, and a pancake with maple syrup that I made myself in this fancy machine in 1 minute. All you do is put down a plate and press start and here it comes. Not real tasty and then Kerry said the next person’s was twice the size as mine (I guess I just warmed the machine up for them !). Kerry had more sense and had some healthier options. Next we headed off to the CNN Centre via Centennial Park which was built for the ... read more

Up at 3am and ready to head back to LAX for our flight to our next destination Atlanta in Georgia. It has been almost 24 hours since we arrived and I miss flying ! Well we both agreed the beds at 4 Points Sheraton LAX were amazingly comfortable. Shame we only got half a night to sleep there. Will be back here again no doubt as they allow you to check in for 24 hours from your actual arrival (i.e. arrive at 7am and stay until 7am and only pay for 1 night stay). Only 10 minutes to LAX with free hotel shuttle so good for connections. Anyway we got to the Airport and check in was a breeze. In fact with Southwest Airlines you print up your own baggage labels and stick them on yourself ... read more

Los Angeles It is now about 7.30am and daylight is just breaking as we walked outside the LAX terminal building and started looking for the free hotel shuttle. This place always reminds me of the movie flying high movie from the 1970’s as I keep hearing over the p.a. system “no parking in the white zone’’. We walked and walked an walked and finally found the right area. Just what we needed ! 10 minutes later the blue shuttle bus rolls in. A nice man puts our luggage in and no other passengers onboard so we have private transfer for the 5 minute ride to 4 Points Sheraton LAX and on arrival it was really quiet so we had no problem checking in. Our room was ready and in the older wing section, but did not ... read more
