The weather this morning was a bit "iffy" when we arose from our slumbers, with overcast skies and the hint of showers, so we waited until noon before heading out. Our plan was to accompany John and Cindy on a walk to the Villa Comunale, the scenic overlook onto the Gulf of Naples, which sits above the harbor from where ferries embark for the isle of Capri. A boat excursion to and around Capri is at the top of their "to do" list on this trip, so they wanted to check with the tour operators who operate out of this small harbor, the Marina Piccola. Unfortunately, the cloudy skies and low-hanging overcast made for less than ideal viewing conditions over the gulf this morning. Dee and I parked ourselves on a bench, while John and Cindy ... read more

Our guests have shown remarkable resilience in recovering from the rigors of their overseas flights yesterday. As we can attest from our own experiences over the years, the first day or so after arrival from the states is like being in a daze, with biological clocks and sleep cycles thrown out of kilter. But John and Cindy, our guests from Florida, are coping well so far. They managed to get several hours of sleep before waking up in the middle of their first night; sat for awhile on the balcony watching the "street action" below; then back in the sack for a few more hours of sleep. They awoke just in time to enjoy one of Chef Dee's robust breakfasts of eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes, toast and coffee. Since there was no strict agenda set for ... read more

For better or worse, today marks my 75th birthday, and if asked for my thoughts on reaching this milestone, I would have to say I'm most grateful for being able to share this day, this odyssey and the better part of my life's journey with a beautiful and loving lady, my wife Dee. As icing on my birthday cake this year, the arrival of close friends later today will be another reason to celebrate! The aforementioned friends from Satsuma, Florida, John and Cindy Vogt, landed in Naples (Italy, that is) just before noon today, after a long and grueling journey. They departed from Jacksonville (FL) yesterday, flew to JFK in New York, where they boarded an overnight Delta flight to Amsterdam, and then connected with a flight that brought them to Naples today shortly before noon. ... read more

The weather gods must be smiling down upon us (at last!), as we enjoyed yet another day of blue skies, sunshine and mild temperatures. We only hope the streak continues, as we're expecting two special guests (a couple from Satsuma, Florida) to arrive this coming Sunday for a 9-day visit. Since they are Floridians, their thermostats (like ours) are not accustomed to the chilly temperatures we have endured since our arrival in Sorrento almost three weeks ago. Our first order of business today was to walk to the pharmacy, the same one we had visited to purchase some blood glucose test strips for me shortly after we had arrived. It is a customer-friendly environment here, and the pharmacist on-duty today was very helpful in suggesting an over-the-counter cough medication that Dee was seeking as a replacement ... read more

Much to our surprise and utter delight, by mid-morning today we spied blue skies and sunshine! What a welcome relief after days of dreary and wet weather conditions. We were even able to ditch our jackets by mid-day, when the air temperature poked its way into the low-to-mid 60s as we walked to the viewing point overlooking the Gulf of Naples. The crystal-clear air and the blue waters of the gulf were like a picture postcard, with Mount Vesuvius and the city of Naples clearly visible in the distance. After enjoying the scenic view out over the gulf, we paid another visit to the cloister at the church of San Francesco, where I believed there to be an interesting gallery exhibiting a local photographer's work. However, it had apparently moved to another location, so we continued ... read more

Once again, overcast skies greeted us this morning, but at least no rain showers (for the moment). We waited until shortly after noon to leave the apartment and search for a place to have lunch. Since our arrival in Sorrento over two weeks ago, we have passed by an old establishment on the Corso Italia with a tongue-twister of a name: Ristorante O'Parrucchiano "La Favorita". Apparently it dates back to 1868, with multiple generations operating the restaurant since that time. The photos and menu on its website looked very appealing, so we decided to give it a try today. As we walked into the front entrance of this restaurant, the ornate decor and fixtures gave us the impression of a grand hotel from the belle époque era. Marble or alabaster staircases lead up to several spacious ... read more

We were somewhat encouraged by the hint of sunshine and clear skies early this morning. But alas, it was not to be, as the clouds began to roll-in by late morning (just when Dee hung some wet towels on the drying rack outside on the balcony). Although there was no precipitation, the overcast skies lingered for the remainder of the day, with the high temperature reaching 59 degrees. Around lunchtime we entered the maze of narrow streets to locate a restaurant on the Via dell'Accademia, oddly named "Piennol Land Food", that Dee had found during an internet search. It turned out the name of the place is derived from the sweet-tasting variety of tomato (piennolo) cultivated on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius. The very friendly and attentive manager, who spoke excellent English, greeted us warmly, and ... read more

Rain showers moved into the area this morning, dropping temperatures into the mid-to-upper 50s, with enough of a breeze to chill our shivering Florida bodies to the bone. So we more or less laid low in the warmth of the apartment until one o'clock, when we decided to have a late lunch at Benvenuti in Casa, the family-operated restaurant across the street from our apartment. This little gem is becoming a favorite spot for us, not only for its delicious Neapolitan cuisine, but for the passion and friendliness of the energetic husband-and-wife team that do such an outstanding job in running the entire operation. Today was our fourth visit to this restaurant since we arrived in Sorrento, two lunches and two dinners. We dined here when our friend from Rome paid us a visit, and she ... read more

The highlight of our last few days here in Sorrento was the much anticipated arrival yesterday of a very dear friend who lives in Rome, but who also has an apartment in Milan. We first met this remarkable lady (Laura) way back in 2014, when we rented her palatial apartment in the Prati district of Rome for two weeks. The following year she arranged to spend an afternoon with us when we were in Florence; and we met again briefly at the Rome airport in 2016, just prior to our flight back to the states that year. During the intervening years we have developed a special kind of relationship and bond with her. She is without doubt one of the most fascinating, kindhearted and energetic people we have encountered during our many years of traveling, so ... read more

Today was a laid-back kind of day, with little of note to report, apart from another nice experience at the English Inn for lunch, and our quest to find a local bakery within walking distance. We are expecting our friend from Rome to arrive by train tomorrow afternoon, and she will be staying with us overnight, so Dee wanted to buy some croissants to serve for breakfast tomorrow morning. We stumbled along the Via Cesario and neighboring streets, believing there to be a bakery or pastry shop in that area. But I must have made a false mental note in my memory bank, as we could not locate any bakery. After twenty minutes or so of futile wandering and searching, we decided to take a break for lunch at the English Inn. It wasn't a total ... read more
