Once again, overcast skies greeted us this morning, but at least no rain showers (for the moment). We waited until shortly after noon to leave the apartment and search for a place to have lunch. Since our arrival in Sorrento over two weeks ago, we have passed by an old establishment on the Corso Italia with a tongue-twister of a name: Ristorante O'Parrucchiano "La Favorita". Apparently it dates back to 1868, with multiple generations operating the restaurant since that time. The photos and menu on its website looked very appealing, so we decided to give it a try today.
As we walked into the front entrance of this restaurant, the ornate decor and fixtures gave us the impression of a grand hotel from the belle époque era. Marble or alabaster staircases lead up to several spacious dining areas (capable of seating hundreds of people), each surrounded with or covered by canopies of lemon and orange trees, with assorted flowers and plants as ground cover. It is truly a stunning venue, and would be even more stunning when sunshine (finally) filters through the canopies of trees and other greenery.
We studied the menu carefully for several minutes before deciding upon
steak and veal, with side orders of grilled zucchini and tomatoes au gratin, and a small bottle of red wine. My portion of veal, which was very good, was so large that I brought half of it home. Dee was less than impressed by her steak; she has now had disappointing steaks at two different places, both times finding them too tough.
After we finished our lunches, and made our exit from the restaurant, we had intended to revisit the church of San Francesco to view an exhibition of photographs at a gallery above the church's cloister, but a rain shower foiled our plans yet again. So we decided to abort our mission and headed for home, with a brief stop at the grocery store to replenish our dwindling supplies of Heineken, gin and vodka!
Dee's Comments: Another day of coping with the foul weather. The forecast called for rain later tonite, but raindrops began falling on our heads much sooner than that. The weather forecasters here are about as reliable as the ones back home; they should just say 50-50, and be done with it!
I donned some new clothes this morning (including new pants),
and was feeling pretty good about myself. We went to a beautiful restaurant for lunch, where I managed to climb a huge set of staircases leading to a garden setting fit for Adam and Eve! After we finished our lunch, and had descended the staircases from heaven, we came out onto the street when,
guess what? The skies opened up, and the downpour began!
We dodged our way to the grocery store to pick-up a few items. By the time we reached the apartment, the legs of my new pants were soaking wet. Remember, we have no clothes dryer, except for the drying rack we place on the balcony, so it will take awhile for them to dry out.
Had a bit of a meltdown at this point, what with our continuing frustration at the bad weather, so I got into my PJs and dozed-off on the couch, in the late afternoon. This can't be springtime in Italy...
can it? Trying hard to remain optimistic about what tomorrow brings. :-)

Italy takes April showers brings May flowers seriously, it stinks it keeps raining on your parade. The restaurant is stunning with all greenery. After your gelato photos, had to get some too! Hoping you get some warm sunshine soon.
