We spent this morning attending to some mundane household chores, including using the washing machine for the first time since our arrival. Despite the lack of instructions, we were able to do a load of wash, but it took almost 2 hours for the cycle to finish. The apartment has no clothes dryer, so we were forced to use a drying rack that we placed outside on the balcony. Although there was direct sunlight for awhile, by the time we left the apartment around noontime the entire balcony was in the shade; plus the winds were nonexistent. Needless to say, when we returned later in the day, the clothes were still as wet as when we had hung them out to dry! Today for lunch we tried the Trattoria Chantecler, a restaurant we had passed when ... read more

More fine weather here today, so we ventured out around 10:30 AM to run a few errands, the primary goal being to buy some paper filters for the brand new drip coffee machine that sits unused in our apartment. We are expecting an overnight guest in a few days, a dear Italian friend from Rome, who's told us she drinks American-style coffee, but we have no filters to use in this coffee maker! If you think this sounds like an easy problem to remedy, you'd be mistaken. We've looked high and low for these filters for days now, but have been unable to find them in several grocery stores, or even in kitchen and housewares shops. We have concluded that most Italians brew their coffee and/or espresso without the use of a drip maker, so there ... read more

A frontal system brought some heavy rain showers throughout this region of Italy yesterday, along with some lightning and thunder to boot (go figure that out, with air temperatures in the mid-50s!). Needless to say, the inclement weather put a damper on our plans to pound the cobblestones and explore another section of the town. So we stayed put inside our apartment the entire day, venturing out only for a grocery run in the late afternoon, and for dinner across the street at Benvenuti in Casa in the evening. We had another wonderful experience at this family-owned and -operated restaurant, where friendly, attentive service along with delicious Italian cuisine seem to be the key ingredients to its success. We are simply amazed at how a husband and wife team can manage to cook and serve with ... read more

Good Friday began for us at about 4:00 AM this morning, when Dee was awakened by some singing and chanting outside on the street below our balcony. We had been forewarned of a religious procession that takes place every year during Easter week, so it did not come as a complete surprise. Still, it was a little eerie to see people dressed in white hoods, with some carrying crucifixes or other relics, solemnly walking down the street in the middle of the night. At first glance, to the uninitiated, it could have passed for a Ku Klux Klan march back in the states! Later in the morning we decided to make another effort to locate the train station. We are expecting a very special Italian friend from Rome to pay us an overnight visit next week, ... read more

The miserable weather that dogged us yesterday gave way to clear, sunny skies today, and the thermometer inched its way up to the mid-60s later in the afternoon. So we set out around 10:30 in the morning, walking to the nearby Parco di Villa Fiorentino, a small park toward the western end of Corso Italia. This park is the site of a villa that now houses a foundation where various cultural events and exhibitions take place. The well-manicured grounds are planted with a variety of plants and flowers, including some lemon and orange trees, and a children's playground occupies a portion of the site. The park was virtually empty when we arrived, and would be an ideal place to relax or bring a picnic lunch. After visiting the park, Dee wanted to find the housewares store ... read more

We had hoped to do some more exploring around town today, but the weather in Sorrento has turned chilly and windy, with overcast skies and rain in the forecast for this afternoon. The temperature this afternoon dropped to 47 degrees Fahrenheit! So we decided to stay in our nest rather than struggle with the inclement conditions. Sorrento is a small coastal town in southwestern Italy, facing the Bay of Naples on the Sorrentine Peninsula. It sits atop cliffs that separate the town from two small marinas, and is known for its scenic water views and Piazza Tasso, the cafe-lined main square. The historic center is a maze of narrow streets and alleys that are usually clogged with visitors during the tourist season. Sorrento is the jumping-off point for tours of the famed Amalfi Drive, the coastal ... read more

Yesterday was a day of rest and recuperation, as we're still struggling to recover our "mojo" after a tiring day of overseas travel. Our diurnal rhythms are way out-of-whack, with sleeping schedules completely disrupted. So we decided to lay low all day, occupying ourselves with unpacking, organizing clothing and personal items for a two-month stay, and familiarizing ourselves with the apartment. One of the benefits of extended stays when traveling is the lack of urgency to see and do everything as quickly as possible, so we have far fewer deadlines and time constraints with which to contend. Late this morning we finally ventured out, the primary mission being to forage for groceries. First we scouted out a butcher shop just a block away from our apartment, where Dee found some basic items and very friendly service. ... read more

Playing practical jokes on April 1st is a tradition in Italy in the same manner as many other countries, although in Italy the day is called Pesce d’Aprile (April’s Fish) rather than April Fools’ Day. The most common trick apparently involves sticking a cut-out picture of a fish on the back of an unsuspecting ‘victim’, and then watching how long it takes for him (or her) to discover the prank. However, as it turned out, Dee and I were "pranked" in an altogether different way as we embarked on Odyssey 2023. We had an auspicious start to our journey, as the Delta flight from Daytona Beach was a piece of cake, with TSA's Security screening a breeze. But after we landed in Atlanta to make the connection for the Delta flight to Rome, things began to ... read more

After a four-year hiatus during the COVID pandemic and its aftermath, it's finally time for us to wipe the dust and cobwebs from our passports, and embark upon another odyssey to Europe. The tentative plan for this trip, which was a surprise birthday gift to my lovely wife and travel partner, is to make Sorrento in southern Italy our home base for two months, taking side-trips wherever the winds and our whims take us. At this point, Rome, Madrid or Barcelona, and Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat (on the French Riviera, not far from Nice) are among the destinations under consideration. We'll spend the final two weeks of our journey in Paris. During previous trips, in 2016 and 2018, we enjoyed visiting the Amalfi Coast/Naples region of Italy, including Sorrento, Positano, Ravello, the Isle of Capri and the impressive Greco-Roman ... read more

As the saying goes, all good things--including this odyssey--must come to an end, so today we packed our suitcases for tomorrow's flight from Paris to Orlando. Our direct flight departs Paris's Charles de Gaulle airport at 2:40 PM local time, and is scheduled to land in Orlando around 6:30 PM. During the past sixty-four days we've traveled thousands of miles (with over a hundred of them on foot), taken almost 1,100 photos, and blogged more than 32,000 words. Of course, we suffered our fair share of aches, pains, and bumps in the road during our journey this year, but the memories of so many amazing sights--and especially the moments spent with dear friends--more than compensated for any setbacks and disappointments we encountered along the way. This final blog entry is mostly an attempt to highlight some ... read more
