Today marks a special occasion, as our very own Ashley Faith Kubel celebrates her 19th-birthday in the City of Light! Her only birthday wishes were to eat escargots, and to watch the Eiffel Tower "sparkle" at night, so we did our best to make them happen. I had made a reservation at the Bistro Saint Dominique, a short walk from the apartment, for 8 o'clock. The plan was to walk toward the Champ de Mars after dinner to watch the hourly illumination of the tower at 10 o'clock, or at least we believed it would happen at that time. However, as it turned out, the show did not take place until 11 o'clock, so the timing caused us a bit of confusion; more details below. With no sightseeing planned for today, the girls slept-in until 9:30 ... read more

Today we made another late-morning start with the goal of visiting the Louvre, the Cathedral of Notre-Dame, and some other sights along the way. In an effort to bypass the local transportation bottlenecks, which will continue through the weekend, we decided to use the metro instead of the buses. But we were soon to find ourselves stymied yet again! The metro line we rode from the École Militaire station blew right by our intended stop at Place de la Concorde, and the next one as well, before making its regular stop at the Place de l'Opera. As a result, Ashley got some unexpected glimpses of the ornate Opéra de Paris, the "bling-bling" on display in the shop windows along the rue de la Paix, and the world famous Hôtel Ritz on the Place Vendôme as we ... read more

A welcome surprise greeted me when I stepped outside at 6 AM this morning. The sweltering heat wave we've been suffering in Paris vanished mysteriously overnight, as it was a cool 60-degrees, with the high temperature for the day reaching a comfortable 75-degrees! By the time our group staggered out to the bus stop at 11:30 AM, Ashley began to complain about being chilly! What a difference a day makes. The original plan for today was to take the #69 bus to the Louvre, but we discovered that some local bus services (including #69, of course!) were curtailed or canceled due to special events taking place at various venues around the city today and tomorrow. It seems Paris wants to show off its sporting ways in its bid to host the 2024 Olympic Games, so as ... read more

The scorching heat wave that has been plaguing Paris continued today, with temperatures soaring into the mid-to-upper 90s. Quite ironic that we're having Florida-like weather during our stay, but as the French say, C'est la vie! Thankfully, the weather forecasts are predicting cooler 80-degree-temps for the next several days, so perhaps the worst is over. Time is now becoming a precious commodity, as we have only a few more days to show Ashley the sights before our long odyssey comes to an end. Today we had made arrangements with Serge, our trusty chauffeur and comrade, to make an afternoon trip to visit the Château de Sceaux, located about 6 miles south of Paris. But first, we made a short stop at a small communal cemetery in the suburb of Kremlin-Bicetre, where we hoped to find a ... read more

Following are the details of Ashley's visit to the Eiffel Tower this morning, in her own words: This morning I put on my "Big Girl Panties" because Grandma and Mitch had arranged a special tour for me to go to the summit of the Eiffel Tower. After eating an early breakfast, we left around 9:15 to go to the tour office, where Mitch left me for the rest of the morning. I learned at the beginning of the tour that every person in our 20 member group was from America, mainly a large family from Wisconsin and a mix of others from Philly, Georgia, and St. Louis. We all sat and chatted a little before our tour guide, a young British dude named Sam, introduced himself and we set off for the Jardins du Champ de ... read more

When one of our tour participants, aka 'Sleeping Beauty', decided to stay in bed until 11 o'clock this morning, today's schedule took a bit of a hit. Truth be told, however, the rest of the group were dragging their derrières after yesterday's struggles with the heat and humidity. High temperatures in Paris are now reaching the low-to-mid-90s, and our energy reserves are just about depleted after 67 days on the road! However, by noontime, we summoned enough ambition to do some window shopping along rue Cler, and then walk to the nearby Hôtel National des Invalides where the tomb of Napoleon Bonaparte is located. After we munched on panini sandwiches the girls bought from a bakery around the corner, we set course for rue Cler. Although we ate lunch on this market street on the Sunday ... read more

We made a late-morning start today by catching the #69 bus, exiting at the Pont des Arts on the right bank of the Seine. This iconic little footbridge, which crosses the river between the Institut de France and the Louvre, was formerly festooned with thousands of monogrammed padlocks (known as "lovelocks") that were deposited on the railings of the bridge by visiting "lovers" from all over the world. It became a major problem over the years, as tons of padlocks had to be periodically removed by local officials. Finally, several years ago, the decision was made to end the practice by removing the railings and wire fences lining both sides of the bridge, and installing a wall that has no means of attaching locks. Now, for better or worse, the bridge is shorn of its "lovelocks" ... read more

We said a fond farewell to Nice and the French Riviera this morning before winging our way to Paris on an Air France jetliner. The 90-minute flight was a smooth one, but our experience at the Nice airport was not so nice. We've experienced many security checks, at many different airports, on our journey around the world. Inexplicably, Nice was the worst! For reasons unknown, the protocol required me to remove the toiletry items I had packed in a zip-lock bag, and then re-pack the items in one of the bags they provided that was half the size of mine. It was like trying to cram 5-pounds of dirt into a 3-pound bag, and I ended up tossing some items just to be done with it. Overall, it was the most time-consuming and frustrating security screening ... read more

Paris will be the last stop on our 74-day journey around the world, which began on April 16th when we departed Daytona Beach for San Francisco; then on to Tokyo, Beijing, Hong Kong, Sydney (Australia), Singapore, New Delhi, Athens (including a 3-day cruise in the Aegean Sea), and Nice (on the French Riviera). We documented our exploits on another travel blog platform that regrettably ceased operations during the trip, so our "Paris Finale" appears on this site. Our granddaughter Ashley joined us for a few days in Nice, and then accompanied us to Paris. It was her very first visit to the City of Light, and judging by the entries and photos that appear above, I think it's safe to conclude that she and Paris got along famously! Truth be told, we owe Ashley a debt ... read more
