Sadly, the stretch of glorious weather we've enjoyed so far came to an abrupt end, as we awakened yesterday morning to dreary skies, intermittent light rain, and much cooler temperatures (the high today just barely reached 60-degrees). On account of the inclement weather, we decided to rest most of the day, but did venture out amid the sprinkles to partake of a fabulous lunch at a quaint hotel and restaurant, named the Hackteufel ("-teufel" = "devil" in German), located on the Steingasse, the tiny street leading to the Old Bridge. The Altstadt section of Heidelberg was mostly deserted today, compared to the throngs of people we've experienced since our arrival, and the tables, chairs and umbrellas along the popular Steingasse were nowhere to be seen. But a fair number of diners had already filled the Hackteufel ... read more

The glorious weather we've been experiencing is forecast to deteriorate starting tomorrow, so today we decided to take advantage of the last of the nice weather by booking passage for a 3-hour cruise from Heidelberg on the Neckar River. The cruise line Weisse Flotte operates a fleet of boats offering various cruises on the Neckar and Rhine rivers. We opted for a 2 o'clock sailing that cruises eastward (upriver) to Neckargemünd (6 miles), then a few miles further east to reach the four-castle town of Neckarsteinach, before making the return voyage to Heidelberg. We sallied forth from the apartment around 11:30, walking along Hauptstrasse, the main pedestrian drag through town, past numerous eateries and retail shops of every imaginable kind, that stretches for a mile through the Altstadt section of Heidelberg. We made a brief stop ... read more

We walked from the apartment to the nearby Kornmarkt shortly before noon, then decided to have a light lunch of paninis at the Cafe Grano, a tiny place on the square, before heading to the funicular station for a ride up the mountain. While visiting the Heidelberg Castle yesterday, we were intrigued by the funicular railway that delivered us from Heidelberg's Kornmarkt to the castle. We discovered that the Heidelberg Mountain Railway (German: Heidelberger Bergbahn) system is a two-section funicular railway, with the first section running from a lower station at Kornmarkt in Heidelberg's Altstadt, via an intermediate station at Heidelberg Castle, then to an upper station at Molkenkur. Here passengers may change trains to the second section, which runs a considerable way up the Königstuhl, a nearby mountain with good views over the city and ... read more

After breakfast this morning, Dee made a solo sortie to the local grocery store, toting her haul in our little carry-on travel bag with wheels. Then we decided to have lunch at the Cafe Gundel up the street before making the journey by funicular train to reach the Heidelberg Castle, which is located 260 ft. up the northern part of the Königstuhl mountain. Although the castle can be reached on foot, most visitors ride the Heidelberger Bergbahn funicular railway that runs from Heidelberg's Kornmarkt to the station at Königstuhl (almost 1,500 ft. above the city). Our train ride up to the castle was pretty slick, although we had to wait for crowds to disperse before buying tickets, and we reached the castle grounds around 3 PM. Today we rendezvoused with our dear friend from back home, Danielle, and her lifelong German friend (more like family), Sigi. For the past two weeks, Danielle has been staying with Sigi, who lives not far from Heidelberg in the town of Plankstadt. Sigi, who celebrated her 78th birthday on Easter, graciously offered to drive the three of us to the nearby town of Neckargemünd to visit Bergfeste Dilsburg, the ruins of a fortress dating back to the 12th-century. It was but a short drive from Heidelberg before we reached our destination, where Sigi dropped us off to return later in the afternoon. The Dilsberg fortress ruins (Burgfeste Dilsberg) occupy a prominent position on a hilltop overlooking the Neckar river valley, near the picturesque former imperial city of Neckargemünd. Built around 1150 by the counts of Lauffen, ... read more

We ended our short, whirlwind stay in Frankfurt yesterday morning when a pre-arranged car service met us at our hotel at 10:00 AM for the 50-mile-drive to Heidelberg. Although the time in Frankfurt was short, we take with us pleasant memories of this city, with its mixture of old and new. Both of us were impressed by the tidy and well-ordered nature of this vibrant metropolis, and our hotel experience was an unexpected plus (probably the last generation of small, family-owned hotels, where personal service is still a priority). We had a bit of a welcoming committee when we arrived in Heidelberg (pop. 160,000), a city on the banks of the Neckar River that is famous for its university (founded 1386), and for the castle ruins perched upon a hill above the Altstadt (old section of ... read more

Today we had booked an excursion to visit one of the most scenic and romantic stretches of the famous Rhine River. The tour combined a bus ride from Frankfurt to Wiesbaden, then continued through several small villages along the east bank of the river until we reached the small villages of Rüdesheim and Assmanshausen, where we boarded a ship for a very pleasant cruise. Many vineyards and castles dot the landscape along this stretch of the Rhine. These fortified castles provided great strategic value back in medieval times, so most of them occupy the high ground on both sides of the river. The mighty Rhine (spelled "Rhein" in German) is the second-longest river in Central and Western Europe. From its sources in Switzerland, the river flows 760 miles in a mostly northerly direction through Germany and ... read more

After a late breakfast in the hotel's buffet dining room, we ventured forth on foot to see some of the sights in the inner city. We walked in an easterly direction from our hotel, through very nicely maintained residential areas, until reaching the Opera House. The original building was finished in 1880, but it was gutted in the bombing of World War II, which devastated much of old Frankfurt. The current structure, rebuilt in the original style, dates to 1981, and sports statues of Mozart and Goethe as part of its entry facade. Present day Frankfurt, on the banks of the Main River (pop. 750,000), has become Germany's financial hub, and it is home to the European Central Bank, Deutsche Bank, and many others. In fact, banking and finance are such pervasive and dominant forces in ... read more

This year's odyssey officially began with wheels-up at 8:30 yesterday evening from Orlando International Airport, when our Lufthansa jumbo jet climbed skyward as the sun started to set in the west. A little over 8 hours later we touched down in Frankfurt, slightly ahead of schedule, although by the time we exited the plane, walked for about 20 minutes to reach customs, and then baggage claim (where our suitcases were the last ones on the carousel), our pre-arranged taxi driver believed we were "no-shows". Fortunately, the driver returned to the arrivals area to check again, whereupon we made contact. Thus all ended well, as we were delivered in short order to our small hotel in the western section of the city. After checking into our hotel we walked to a nearby pizzeria for a bite to ... read more

Our next odyssey, which is now in the final planning stage, will mark our 6th major journey in as many years. Although not our longest one in terms of duration, we'll be departing on April 16th for a 70-day-trip to Germany, Scandinavia, Prague, Munich and Paris. We'll even set our feet upon Russian soil during a brief stopover in St. Petersburg! Our journey will begin with 3 days in Frankfurt/Main, Germany, where I spent a year with the U.S. Army 50 years ago(!), in 1969-70; and then another year working as a civilian from 1974-75. We hope to take a Rhine River cruise during our short stay in Frankfurt, then we'll travel an hour or so south to reach Heidelberg for a 10-day stay in this famous university town with its medieval castle on the bank ... read more
