This morning we bade a fond farewell to Prague, and then set out by car toward our next destination, the Bavarian city of Munich. When planning this year's odyssey months ago, the use of a hired car and driver proved to be more economical than flying the relatively short distance (230 miles) between the two cities. It's about a 4-hour drive, but we decided to make a stop along the way in the city of Regensburg, roughly the halfway point, for some brief sightseeing and lunch. The car and driver arrived at our apartment by 9:00 AM, and we soon left Prague's traffic behind in favor of the open highways through green, rolling countryside. We encountered light-to-moderate rainfall as we drove through the Czech city of Pilsen, home of the famous beer brewery, and the rainy ... read more

Today would likely be our final day of sightseeing in Prague, before moving on to Munich, so we decided to visit the area known as Wenceslas Square. Many important historical events have occurred here, and it is a traditional setting for demonstrations, celebrations, and other public gatherings. The square is named after the legendary and much revered duke of Bohemia who ruled from 921 until his assassination (by his younger brother) in 935. His martyrdom and the popularity of several biographies gave rise to a reputation for heroic virtue and piety that resulted in his elevation to sainthood. He was posthumously declared to be a king, and eventually came to be recognized as the patron saint of the Czech state. He is also the subject of the well-known "Good King Wenceslas", a carol for Saint Stephen's ... read more

The weather in Prague today was gorgeous, with mostly sunny skies and a high temperature that reached 75 degrees by mid-afternoon. Dee was in pretty good spirits this morning and pronounced herself "fit for duty", so by 11:30 AM we walked to the metro station for a ride into the Old Town and Jewish Quarter. We had spent some time in this area during our guided tour earlier in the week, but did not have time to visit the interiors of the synagogues or the Jewish cemetery. Our plan also included an ascent (via elevator) to a viewing gallery at the top of the Town Hall tower, from which vantage point there is a 360-degree view of the surrounding area. After exiting the Staromestska metro station, it was but a short walk to the Jewish Museum's ... read more

Yesterday's activities were most assuredly not planned as part of this year's itinerary; however, given the circumstances, it could have been worse. In our experiences over the years, nothing has been more unsettling and stressful than finding ourselves in a foreign country with a medical issue. In 2014, Dee developed shingles while we were in the south of France, which required a trip to the ER in Aix en Provence. The following year, while in Paris, I went to the American Hospital there with borderline pneumonia. Then in 2017, during our around-the-world trip, I succumbed to a nasty intestinal infection for which I sought treatment in Athens, and subsequently in Nice. Last year we came away unscathed, but this year we've not been as fortunate. A few days before our departure, I strained, tore or severely ... read more

Our guide and driver, Marek and Karel, met us at 9 AM this morning for the second part of the Prague tour we had booked. The weather here yesterday was miserable, with rain and gusty winds most of the day, but the forecast is for improving conditions later this afternoon. Today we are to visit the Prague Castle, a castle complex dating from the 9th-century. The castle is the official office of the President of the Czech Republic, and has been a seat of power for kings of Bohemia, Holy Roman emperors, and presidents of Czechoslovakia. According to the Guinness Book of Records, Prague Castle is the largest ancient castle in the world, occupying an area of almost 750,000 square feet, at about 1,870 feet in length and an average of about 430 feet wide. This morning, under cloudy skies but mild temperatures in the upper-60s, we embarked upon the first of two guided tours of Prague booked through a local agency. Today's itinerary focused upon the Old Town Square, the Jewish Quarter (Josefov) and the Charles Bridge. Our personal guide, Marek (along with a friendly young driver named Karel), turned out to be an impressive guy in his 40s who speaks nine languages--incredible! Throughout the tour he exhibited an encyclopedic knowledge of Czech history, while setting a pace that was easily manageable for us. The driver dropped us off in the vicinity of the Jewish Quarter, a three-block area in the Old Town that has been home to a Jewish community for a thousand years. Jews first came to Prague in the 10th-century, where they were allotted the least hospitable ... read more

We lost our sea legs early this morning, as the Serenade of the Seas docked in Copenhagen around 7 AM, and we disembarked from the ship an hour or so later. After departing Helsinki this past Friday, we'd been at sea for almost 36 hours, and except for some dense, "pea soup"-type fog for most of the day yesterday, the weather and sea conditions continued to be very calm. In fact, the entire voyage was remarkably smooth, much to our surprise and relief. The past two days we concentrated on taking it easy after the exhausting 3-days we spent in Stockholm, Tallinn and St. Petersburg. We decided to forgo the shore excursion when the ship docked in Helsinki, and from what a few of the other passengers told us, we did not miss much by staying ... read more

This morning we had an early wake-up call, as the ship docked at the port in St. Petersburg, Russia. The shore excursion this day, under blue skies and mild temperatures, was expected to be challenging--lots of stairs, walking and crowded tourist venues. It turned out to be even more grueling than expected, and by the time we limped back to board the ship at 5 o'clock, we were virtual zombies. The city of St. Petersburg (pop. 5.2 million) has a rich and glorious history going back to Peter the Great (1689-1725), whose vision it was to turn the city into an imperial capital. He was largely successful in doing so, and thus commenced the 300-year reign of the Romanov dynasty. After passing through the Russian passport control at the dock, we boarded our tour bus, then ... read more

Our ship pulled into its berth in Tallinn, Estonia, at around 9 AM this morning, after a smooth trip from Stockholm overnight. The weather conditions continue to be chilly in the morning, but reach the 50s by afternoon, with blue skies and sunshine. It seems we've left our weather woes behind us, at least for the moment. The Baltic Sea conditions during the first few days of our cruise have been unbelievably calm. Tonight, as we cruise to St. Petersburg, Russia, it looks like a sheet of glass. The shore excursion planned for today departed from the ship by 10 AM, when we boarded a bus with a tour guide (Anne) who would prove to be a real gem. What a difference from yesterday's experience in Stockholm! She is a native Estonian, educated in Britain, in ... read more

After thirty-six hours of cruising on the Baltic Sea from Copenhagen, we docked in Stockholm this morning shortly before 9 AM. It has been surprisingly smooth sailing thus far, with sea conditions calm. When we docked, the air temperature was 33 degrees, but it rose to a balmy 60 degrees by mid-day, with clear blue skies and sunshine the order of the day. We had booked an excursion, "Stockholm On Your Own", which provided bus transportation to three separate locations in the city, where participants were free to visit what they wished independently. It seemed like a flexible approach, but as it turned out, there were simply too many sights and too little time devoted to each location. As a result, we came away from today's experience both frustrated and a little disappointed. The first stop ... read more
