Yesterday we laid low, venturing out only to visit the local butcher for a poulet roti (rotisserie chicken); the boulangerie (bakery) for a baguette and croissants; and a vegetable vendor outside our door for some zucchini flowers, fennel, potatoes, apples, tomato, green beans, white asparagus and some shallots. Apparently Chef Dee is planning something special for dinner? Feeling somewhat rejuvenated today, we decided to try one of the designed promenades, or walking trails, that hug the coastline of the Cap Ferrat peninsula where we are located. These walks are of various distances and degrees of difficulty, so we selected one of the least-demanding of them, the Promenade Maurice Rouvier, which runs in a northerly direction for about 1.2 kilometers starting from the Saint-Jean town hall. The path we followed was very flat, with only a few ... read more

The weather here in this little corner of paradise continues to be glorious, with clear, blue skies and temperatures in the upper 60s. We decided today to take a stroll along the section of the port promenade that we had yet to explore, so this morning we did so. Along this stretch we passed numerous pleasure boats moored in their berths, a seashell museum, movie theater, a restaurant with an inviting terrace, a hair dresser (coiffeur) and a marine supply/rental shop. On our return walk, as it was approaching lunchtime, we passed Le Bar du Port, where we had eaten on the night of our arrival. The chalkboard menu displayed outside included some interesting dishes, so we grabbed a table on the terrace. Shortly thereafter, Anthony (the friendly waiter we met on our first visit) welcomed ... read more

We spent most of our first morning in Saint-Jean unpacking suitcases, and familiarizing ourselves with our new home-away-from-home, which may well be the finest rental apartment we've encountered in our many years of traveling around Europe. Comfortable, nicely furnished and very well-equipped, the apartment's location across the street from the port all contribute to making it the perfect situation for us. Our first order of business today, following a brief visit to the upscale tourist information office by the port, was to buy some provisions at the nearby grocery store, where we quickly discovered that we were now in a different world from Sorrento in southern Italy! The store itself, part of the Casino chain that we've encountered elsewhere in France over the years, stocks a wider variety of merchandise (and is much more spacious) than ... read more

Today we flew via easyJet from Naples to Nice for our 10-day visit to Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, located in the heart of the French Riviera (Côte d'Azur), between Nice and Monaco. The town of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, located about 6 miles northeast of Nice, is a former fishing village nestled in an exceptional and scenic spot on a peninsula that juts out from the southeast coast of France into the Mediterranean Sea. According to Wikipedia, Cap Ferrat was named in 2012 as the second most expensive residential location in the world after Monaco. Dee and I had enjoyed a very enjoyable stay in Nice back in 2017, when our granddaughter Ashley joined us for a few days before we took her to Paris. So we decided on an encore visit to this region of France during our odyssey this year. ... read more

The weather today in Sorrento started and ended on a high note, with the warmest temperatures (high 60s) we've experienced since our arrival at the beginning of April. It was a beautiful day to be outside (for a change), and for Dee to place sheets and other laundry outside on the balcony of our apartment to dry (there is a washing machine, but no dryer). We had no firm plans for the day, other than to go out for lunch, so we lounged around until noon. Late in the morning, Dee received a text message from a friend of ours, Cindy Pinizzotto (from Port Orange, Florida), with a recommendation for a restaurant she, her husband and son had enjoyed during their visit to Sorrento five years ago, the Tavern Allegra. We were not familiar with the ... read more

All hands were on-deck at the butt-crack of dawn this morning, as our friends John and Cindy are heading home after their 9-day-visit. Our trusty friend and driver, Francesco, arrived at 6:00AM to deliver them to the airport in Naples for their 9:30AM flight to Amsterdam. From there, they connect with a transatlantic flight to JFK, and then arrive in Jacksonville, Florida, which is about a 2-hour drive from their home. It will be a long and tiring trip, but we hope a safe and reasonably comfortable one, at least to the extent that is possible with airline travel these days. Although Dee and I were sad to see them depart, they left us with many fond memories of the experiences we shared together during their stay. UPDATE: As I write this blog entry, we received ... read more

Throughout the past week, all of us had become aware of the local excitement that was brewing over the upcoming professional soccer match between the local favorite, Forza Napoli (a team from Naples), and a rival team (Salernitana) from the nearby city of Salerno. Many shops, storefronts and apartment balconies began to sprout banners and flags with the team's name and checkered-blue logo emblazoned upon them. Sorrento city workers even strung streamers on top of the streetlight poles, crisscrossing the streamers from one side of the street to the other. We decided to have lunch at La Maison Douce at around 1:00PM, two hours before the scheduled start of the match that was to be played in Naples. This was the first time John and Cindy had accompanied us to this restaurant on the Corso Italia, ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Massa Lubrense April 29th 2023

Today we had booked a 4-hour tour of La Masseria, a family-owned and operated farm in Massa Lubrense, a village located about 5 miles to the southwest of Sorrento. The pick-up point for our group of 20 people was about a 10-minute walk from our apartment on Via degli Aranci, and we arrived slightly early for the scheduled 3:30PM rendezvous with the minibus and driver that would deliver us to the farm. Our driver today, a grumpy-looking guy who looked to be in his 60s, turned out to be quite a character. Dee noted straight away that his fly was at half-mast (so I quickly dubbed him "Flyboy"), and he was clearly agitated at a few late stragglers (and some no-shows), while all the while muttering expletives in Italian. But the real fun began during the ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Amalfi April 27th 2023

Today was the day we had arranged with our old friend and guide, Francesco Ruggiero, to visit the Amalfi Coast and its popular tourist haunts of Positano, Amalfi Town and Ravello. Dee and I had made this day trip 7 years ago, and we were excited to share the experience again with John and Cindy during their stay. We could not have hoped for more ideal weather conditions, with clear blue skies and temperatures in the upper 60s throughout the day. The so-called Amalfi Drive, the two-lane road that meanders its way from Sorrento to Salerno, hugs the southern coastline of the Sorrentine peninsula adjacent to the Gulf of Salerno (part of the Mediterranean Sea, as is the Gulf of Naples in Sorrento). The breathtaking views along this route are world famous, while the switchbacks and ... read more

Editorial Note: Our friends, John and Cindy, wanted to visit Capri during their 9-day stay with us in Sorrento, so they did just that today. Dee and I decided to forgo the walking that would be involved in this excursion, so we stayed close to home. Cindy prepared the following commentary and provided the photos regarding their adventure. After our intel gathering at Marina Piccola with Mitch and Dee on Tuesday, John and I decided on an 8 am ferry departure on Wednesday to Capri. At 7 am we trekked along the path where Mitch and Dee had helped us leave breadcrumbs the previous day. We were feeling very cosmopolitan and successful until we arrived at the gates leading to Villa Comunale where the lift delivers tourists down to the docks. It all came to a ... read more
