The proper "pinky" technique
John demonstrating the proper technique for slurping espresso after lunch at Benvenuti in Casa. Our guests have shown remarkable resilience in recovering from the rigors of their overseas flights yesterday. As we can attest from our own experiences over the years, the first day or so after arrival from the states is like being in a daze, with biological clocks and sleep cycles thrown out of kilter. But John and Cindy, our guests from Florida, are coping well so far. They managed to get several hours of sleep before waking up in the middle of their first night; sat for awhile on the balcony watching the "street action" below; then back in the sack for a few more hours of sleep. They awoke just in time to enjoy one of Chef Dee's robust breakfasts of eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes, toast and coffee.
Since there was no strict agenda set for today, we dawdled around the apartment all morning, chatting and discussing plans for sightseeing tours and activities to be scheduled during their stay. We did receive a commitment from Francesco, our good friend and local tour guide, for a day trip along the Amalfi Coast later this week. John and Cindy are considering taking a boat excursion to Capri, and we also booked a

Lunch at Benvenuti in Casa 1/2-day tour for the four of us to visit a local farm.
We decided to have lunch at Benvenuti in Casa restaurant across the street, the little restaurant that has impressed us so much during our stay. John and Cindy were anxious to try some Italian food, and we were all pretty hungry by this point, so at around 12:30 we sat down and began what would become a 2-hour feast! John and Dee ordered the delicious meatball dish served here (along with sides of fried potatoes and salad). Cindy tried the eggplant parmigiana, while I had the ravioli.
We shared a bottle of red wine, sampled two tasty dessert items (cannoli and a limoncello-soaked sponge cake served with custard), then finished our feast with complimentary shot glasses of chilled limoncello and espresso. Much to our surprise, and over our objections, John and Cindy insisted on paying the tab for our lunches today, so we were most appreciative for their kind gesture!
Since John and Cindy were in such good spirits, we all decided to take a stroll on the Corso Italia, and into the maze of streets and passages that surround it. We paid a short
visit inside the cathedral before walking to the Piazza Tasso, and then walked back along the narrow and crowded Via Cesario, where they got a sense of the crush of tourists that push and jostle their way through the tangled mess of shops and restaurants that line this tiny street.
After returning to Corso Italia, we all took a rest break on benches next to the cathedral before heading to the grocery store on the way back to the apartment. After lugging groceries by ourselves for the last three weeks, it was sheer pleasure to have the able-bodied assistance of John and Cindy as we trucked our booty home today. All in all, a great first day shared with our visitors!
