Lemon cake and gelato
A delectable Italian lemon dessert with genoise cake, limoncello and lemon cream. The weather this morning was a bit "iffy" when we arose from our slumbers, with overcast skies and the hint of showers, so we waited until noon before heading out. Our plan was to accompany John and Cindy on a walk to the Villa Comunale, the scenic overlook onto the Gulf of Naples, which sits above the harbor from where ferries embark for the isle of Capri. A boat excursion to and around Capri is at the top of their "to do" list on this trip, so they wanted to check with the tour operators who operate out of this small harbor, the Marina Piccola.
Unfortunately, the cloudy skies and low-hanging overcast made for less than ideal viewing conditions over the gulf this morning. Dee and I parked ourselves on a bench, while John and Cindy rode the elevator down to the promenade by the water, where various restaurants and other resort-type facilities operate. This promenade winds it way east toward the marina, which they reached after a 15-minute walk. After checking with several tour operators, they decided on a full-day excursion for tomorrow that includes a ferry ride to Capri, a cruise around the island on a smaller boat
(with an optional visit to the famed Blue Grotto), and then some free time to walk around the island before boarding a return ferry to Sorrento.
After John and Cindy returned from the marina, we all retraced our steps to the Corso Italia, with Dee leading the way. Today she was walking the cobbles like an athlete, showing strength and stamina in her strides that were quite impressive! We wanted to take our friends to the English Inn for lunch today, and we climbed the stairs to the upper deck where we sat at a table surrounded by wisteria and orange trees. The young staffer (Danielo) served us today, and he was his usual friendly and attentive self (he now knows us by our first names).
Cindy and I ordered the fish and chips platter, John had the monster-sized cheeseburger with chips, and Dee opted for a mixed salad and a bowl of meatballs. We all finished our meals, except for Dee, who was less than ecstatic about her meatballs (although her salad was excellent). To our utter amazement, when it came time to pay the tab, Danielo told us there would be no charge for Dee's meatballs
because he noticed that she had left most of them in the bowl! Wow, how often have any of you had this kind of experience at a restaurant? Remember, Dee had made no complaint whatsoever about the meatballs; the waiter simply inferred she did not like them because she had not devoured them all. We could not believe this extraordinary dining experience!
After finishing our lunch, while walking along the Corso Italia, John announced he was ready for some gelato. He did not need to twist our arms, so Dee led the way to the classy gelateria we had tried several days, Il Duomo. It was quite crowded, despite the threatening clouds overhead, and just as we had snagged a small outside table, some light rain drops began to fall. Before the rain chased us to an indoor table, John and I noticed customers being served the most delectable dessert imaginable (see today's photos). A very friendly waitress explained to us what these customers were eating, so after we scurried to an indoor table to escape the rain, we gorged ourselves with $30 worth of these decadent goodies...but it was worth every penny!
Dee's Comments: Great day had
by all. The streets were packed with tourists, but we made it through the maze to reach the beautiful Gulf of Naples. It was a little overcast, but still a beautiful vista, while we sat on a bench waiting for John and Cindy to return from the marina below. They have been wonderful guests, adapting quickly and going with the flow over here.
After they had rejoined us, we walked to our favorite hangout, the English Inn, and got a table in the upper garden area. Cindy loved the wisteria and orange trees. Had some interesting conversation and laughs with three ladies from Wisconsin before we left. Then to the gelato place we tried before, where we had another great experience. After light rain began to come down, a lovely waitress took us inside and suggested some amazing desserts that we all enjoyed.

Omg that dessert! Now you won’t be able to order gelato any other way! Great photos of everyone and glad to see the rain wasn’t too bad and you were able to get out and about.
