Geo: 38.6276, -90.199Today was our five year wedding anniversary so we took a quick trip to St Louis! We took a ride up the arch to see the view of St Louis - the river on one side, Busch Stadium on the other. The game started out with a bang ~ two homeruns in the first inning back to back!!! WHO can say they saw THAT at a St Louis Cardinals game?? We saw Fredbird, A Clydesdale, a Bald Eagle that is trained to entertain the crowd, and we spent TONS of money on drinks and food - $27 for one beer, one Diet Coke, and one very tiny no-big-deal hot dog (the hot dog alone was $9). We had a great time! The game was good and we had good seats and good neighbors during ... read more

Geo: 37.209, -93.2916I'm using this entry to explain our change in travel plans this year. As many of you know, in October 2013 we booked a trip to China. We were both strangely nervous and for various reasons (excuses) by March of this year we paid a transfer fee with our tour company and moved our funds to visit Europe. About a week or so ago our goddaughter, Molly, a mere 16 years old, hopped on a plane to Japan. She was our inspiration and we decided if she has the courage, so do we. We paid another change fee, booked a new trip to China, and paid for the trip in-full. Our tour is nonrefundable so barring any medical emergencies, we shall be visiting China in a few months! The only step remaining in the ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona May 16th 2013

Geo: 41.3879, 2.16992We woke-up to pouring rain in Barcelona early-early this morning! It had rained so hard, in fact, that the Barcelona port had electrical problems and the gangway to walk off the ship was not working. Kamie & I had to leave at 6:15am to take our Carnival transfer bus to the airport. We were delayed about 45 minutes waiting for the gangway to be fixed. We had a morning flight back to Dublin, Ireland today. We saw the last of some of our onboard friends as we were leaving this morning and it was nice to say happy goodbyes and best wishes! :-) Then... something sorta funny & sorta sad happened (but not to us, thank goodness!). I had read that last year in Europe Carnival had all sorts of problems with the luggage ... read more

Europe » France May 15th 2013

Geo: 43.2983, 5.38322Today was a lovely day in Marseille, France… the Provence region of France. We arrived and it was an interesting, mountainous area and it was also raining and chilly today. We took the Carnival shuttle to "town" and learned there really wasn't much to see or do in Marseille. We took a little touristy train around the town and up the hill to the Notre Dame and the Le Corniche area. We walked and finally shopped for just a bit. Kamie said we were like little kids today because we both decided to buy French hats. We were excited wearing them back to the ship. France left almost the same impression on me this time as the last time we visited – clean, impressive, and expensive. So, it's around 7:30pm when I am writing ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Pisa May 14th 2013

Geo: 43.7161, 10.3966Our plan today was to do what Kamie & I do best together – go out on our own and take the public buses and trains to get where we want to go and see what we want to see. Today we took a shuttle… to a bus… to another bus (our mistake for listening to two well-meaning Aussies)….to the train station….where we took a train to Pisa…and a bus… to the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It was a lot easier than it sounds and the total transportation costs for the day for 2 was 26 Euros versus a minimum tour cost of 120 Euros. And I have to say… as we saw some of our friends leaving on a tour bus… l felt so sorry for them. Traveling on your own is freeing. ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Positano May 12th 2013

Geo: 40.6299, 14.4863Our boat arrived in Napoli early this morning. Kamie & I were awake before 6am. We were showered and out the door at 7:30am. We had a private tour of 8 people scheduled for today. We met everyone in the main lobby of the ship and they were all very nice people. We walked off the ship and Tony was standing there - an adorable, short Italian man - with a sign with my name on it and a silver Mercedes van. Nice. We all loaded-up and drove... and drove... and drove. Today we went from Napoli to Sorrento to Positano to the actual town of Amalfi and on to Ravello.... we drove through the entire Amalfi Coast. We had short stops along the way for the breathtaking views and 1-hour stops in Positano, ... read more

Europe » Italy » Sicily » Messina May 11th 2013

Geo: 38.1922, 15.5566We had a beautiful day today! I was awake around 4am and ready to get off the boat before 8am. Kamie wasn't quite as bright-eyed as myself but we still got off the boat around 8am. Today we walked, and walked, and walked…. all over the town of Messina on this island of Sicily. There is history at every corner. The buildings are amazing. The cars on this island are the teeniest, tiniest cars I've seen anywhere…Fiats and Mini Coopers… we even saw what I think was a Mini, Mini. It said "Mini" across the front and it was a tiny version of my car – no kidding! They don't drive too crazy here (thank goodness) as pedestrians are everywhere and well respected. We walked from one side of the town (graffiti, old barbershops, ... read more

Geo: 38.1158, 13.3598Today was our second (and last) sea day aboard the ship. The most exciting thing to happen was our decision to eat breakfast in the formal dining room where we met six other people with neat stories. We sat across from a couple from Australia, probably not even 25 years old yet, recently engaged, and had taken six months off from work to travel the world!! They had spent three weeks in Vietnam and some other areas of Asia prior to flying to Venice and boarding this cruise… after the cruise they will go to Luxembourg and then to the Baltics and they plan to visit every continent if possible. Amazing, huh? Kamie & I had the least amount of vacation of any couple – as usual – Americans vacation time is nothing compared ... read more

Middle East » Turkey May 9th 2013

Geo: 38.4122, 27.1387Turkey had my blood boiling before 10am. We got off the boat around 9am today and walked by the Carnival tour buses straight to the Izmir City Tour bus. This bus is advertised as a hop-on, hop-off bus which stops at 17 stops throughout Izmir and is super cheap at a price of 10 Euros per person for a ticket good for the entire day. Well, we got to the bus and it was about 75% full and started to leave so I gestured to the driver "Can we get on?" and he took his finger, moved it across in a line as if to cut his neck off and said "NO!" Dangit! He left and then I saw a little ticket booth - with a line of others wanting tickets. O, Okay, I ... read more
