I am here! I have survived the famous 13 hour bumpy bus ride from the depths of Hades from Bangkok to Siem Reap. Complete with a collapsed bridge and passengers with diarrhea (not me, thankfully). I am staying in a lovely guest house a bit out of town. But I couldn't resist the $3 a night price for friendly service, a soft double bed and my own bathroom. What luxury. I have also had the wonderful fortune of being adopted by three of the funniest, good-sprited Irish girls who are staying at the same guest house. We are sharing lots of laughs and stories. Good company! And I hopefully will be able to meet them later in Phnom Penh for more adventures. Siem Reap is a wonderful little town with lots of character and friendly people. ... read more

19-8 Blog Waking up at 6 with the banging of bhuddist gongs, we got ready efficiently and after a breakfast of steamed bread, we set off at 7.15. there was lots of stepping ahead of us this day. We started off with morale high and legs strong, taking in some magnificent views of the cliffs that faced us. We knew that they would get even better as they went on. But they didn’t. We soon hit the cloud base and visibility was down to about 50m or so. Our view of our path was not hindered, but the scenery became just a cloud of mist, and we could only imagine what amazing scenery they were hiding from us. Later in the morning it started to rain. I suddenly became aware of how precarious the steps could ... read more

From my notebook that I had on the planes with me: So, I had promised that I would write an entry before I left for China but as it turned out I didn't have time - even for sleep. A few of my friends and I stayed out late on Thursday night as I hadn'ts een some of them in quite a long time. I then spent the rest of the night packing. I hope I brought a lot of things I need, I already know I left behind my Chinese notes (for whatever stupid reason) but hopefully what I do have will help me. My flight from Raleigh/Durham to New York went well but then my flight from New York to Beijing got delayed an hour. Fortunately I met a nice young man in the ... read more

Yesterday I was downtown in Beijing for some shopping. My roommate was bored so she took me there by subway whcih was an interesting experience. They don't seems to be very effective the lovely chinese...for example, they dont have rubbish bins instead they have people collecting all the tickets. And you have to have different tickets that you have to change for other tickets if you change line. Anyway I found a bookstore with some english books so I bought the new Harry Potter for the times when I feel to lost. In the evening we had porridge to eat...nothing I recommend! It's rice and alot of water and doesn't taste much. I have som nuts in mine wich didn't make any difference, but I only paid 0,5 euro so I really shouldn't complain. The smog ... read more

It’s amazing how quickly we fall asleep these days. I (Godfrey) used to lie in bed awake for up to an hour before I would slip into unconsciousness, but ever since the arrival of Baby Boo-Boo, we’ve both been conking out in a matter of seconds! Stacey and baby just fell asleep on the bed, and it took about as long as for me to write this paragraph! Sarah is tiring us out, even though the only other responsibilities we have here in China are (1) to exchange dollars into yuan (which we’ve had to do four times already because we underestimate how much money we’re going to spend) and (2) to find the next great restaurant to eat at. (BTW, tonight we had an awesome buffet dinner at the hotel restaurant…all-you-can-eat seafood, sashimi, sushi rolls, ... read more

Preparing for this journey is a daunding task. Since I am going alone, I only have myself to rely so I better be prepared. Last week-end I went to Wichita and bought a tent, stove, camping mattress, water purifier and some other things for the trip. I found out that my new bike will not be in until Sept. 8th. I am anxious to try out all my new gear and especially the bike. I am reading about every biking blog there is on the internet.... read more

I really thank God for the privilege of today! Sitting in front of the window of my residence room I’m starring out at the 7am traffic. My body is still jet-lagged and so I wake up really early ( 5 or 6am). The residence I’m in is said to be the most luxurious res. In Hong Kong ! They just built it but charge the same price : ) Thus far I’ve been learning some Cantonese, most are so shocked when I speak the little I know. However, Mandarin is what I really want to learn and thus far my Japanese friend who speaks little English has been teaching me some Japanese so that we can understand each other and so in all I might get really confused very soon with all the languages. I’ve been ... read more

OUF! Puis, ... read more

Oh my gosh. This is super-embarrassing, but I know it was the amoxycillin that had me break out because.... it's actually happened before! When I had mono in 1998, interestingly, the last time I took antibiotics, I broke out in the same exact rash. How did I forget that?????? And every time someone asks if I'm allergic to any medications I say no. Ridiculous. Anyway, I'm SO happy to know what this rash is all about, and also to know that it will probably be gone by the time I get home. Phew! All is well:-D Love, Jess... read more

Hello! First of all, I'm okay. Seriously. You really need to get that before you read on. Okay, ready? Secondly, I will never, EVER, EVER!!!! say the phrase, "Well, at least it can't get any worse." I was thinking that as I almost started to laugh and cry at the same time after slipping and falling on the marble steps leaving my hotel. But not to worry, because you can hardly even see the bruise through my full-body (including face) rash. The details: Yesterday I started to see a rash on the inside of my wrist and a little bit onto my thenar eminence (the big fat pad between your thumb and wrist). It was bilateral and on the wrong dermatome, so I knew it couldn't be the shingles. I figured I must just be having ... read more
