Jiuhuashan, nine brilliant mountains, is one of China's great Buddhist peaks, and was founded in the XII century when a Korean monk believed to be the reincarnation of somebody holy and revered met his end. After a five hour coach trip from Nanjing, up along the bank of the wide Yangzi, passengers disembarked to pay the steep park entry before boarding the complimentary mini bus lift to the village of Jiuhuashan. Shrouded in mist, the village is encircled by a road connecting the temples and guesthouses, small hotels and eateries and countless shops selling overpriced wood sculptures, dried foods, teas, umbrellas, music, instruments, pendants, everything but postcards. In the late afternoon I settle into the pension, accept a cup of hot oolong tea and shower before strolling to nearby Dabei Lou where monks young and old ... read more

Once again I'm playing catch up with my travelblogs! James and I spent about six days on Perhentain Kecil Island, one of the two main Perhentian Islands. We arrived in early July and we would probably have spent longer there if we had not had to make our way up to Bangkok for mid-July. Nonetheless, six days was time enough to recharge from the exertions of mainland Malaysia and to generally just chill out on this small isolated beach. I doubt I'll ever find a beach and sea that I like more than this one. In the six or seven weeks that have passed since my time there I haven't found a place that can challenge its number one spot on the 'Chris List', although some have come close. It's also pleasing for me to have ... read more

LEH BY ROAD. The mountains of the North Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir have always facinated & enchanted me. Over the last three years I have been travelling to Srinagar very frequently on business. In June 2004 I was in Srinagar on business and invited four of my college time friends to come for a holiday. My friends were from the plains and were mesmerised by the natural beauty. We went to Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Pahalgam, Baramulla, Kupwara and many more beautiful places. It was then we decided to go to Leh, Ladakh for a vacation the next year. I had been to Leh once by Air but after seeing the moonscape thought driving to leh will be more excieting. JAMMU TO SRINAGAR. 25th July 2005. We leave Jammu for Leh in our car. On arrival at Singapore Airport, we were greeted by the cutest baby you have ever seen (we may be a bit biased - but she is gorgeous). Gill finally got to meet her niece Chloe face to face. We were staying with Jenny and Simon whilst were waiting for our Vietnamese visas to be processed. Our first stop was back to their appartment and then off to the pub to catch up with Simon (who was in dire need of Gill's physio services as he had slipped a disc!!!). The next day all the girls went shopping on Orchard Road - including a stop at Marks and Spencer! Jenny had organised for us to have breakfast at Singapore Zoo - which involved sitting down with the orangutangs, whilst they too enjoyed a fruit buffet. Gill decided ... read more

Arrived in Mersing to catch the ferry. The coach drive from Singapore was a little hairy - we think the driver was behind schedule, leading him to overtake at the most bizarre times (no visibility, blind bends etc). It was iether that or it's the Malaysian way - we'll find out later. As soon as we got off the bus we were herded into a travel agents, along with 20 other westeners, by a couple of persistant locals. We came out thee quarters of an hour later, and a host of Malaysian Ringits lighter. Unfortunately (we found out later) we'd managed to be talked out of our original plan to go to Salang and into a resort called Panuba - as the later was 'quieter' and still had lots of facilities and restaurants etc. In actual ... read more

Was will man mehr? Da bleibt einem nur ... read more

Hello everyone! Here's a quick update from McLeod Gang. I basically did nothing today. Okay, I officially HATE doing nothing! :-P I've been pretty cranky today, and not nearly as flexible as usual. I'm realizing that I want it my way, and ONLY my way when I'm sick, and that could really change at any moment;-) And yes, I do get the humor in that comment because I'm probably a little like that all the time. So basically I was in bed all afternoon, but this morning I got up and went to another cooking class and learned how to make several kinds of Tibetan bread. The high point of the class was when Sara from Belgium was telling me about her 87-year old grandma who drinks a raw egg mixed in with her beer every ... read more

And it's time for the weekly news report. Today's been frustrating.. figuring out schedules and hours, etc. I taught my last "After School Activities" class at the JAC to the class I love so much. I was sad to see them go.. I might see some of them again in other classes, but a lot of them I won't and they are such sweet kids, always giving me little gifts and watching my face turn upside down when they give me sour candies. Though today they picked on me a bit, told me I have a bastketball belly (!!), a long nose, and thick fingers. All very attractive features (haha hello self-consciousness!). I'm done for today (thank god) and tomorrow was supposed to be a full day off, but because of the way my hours worked ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Vientiane August 25th 2005

It took me some time to update this blog as I’ve been busy moving from one place to another. I joined an Intrepid Travel group tour in Laos, and our group has been shuttling from one city to another for the past few days. Our journey commenced August 16 in Chiang Mai and ended August 24 in Vientiane-Laos’ capital. All the while I spent most of my time packing and upacking, listening to my discman while sitting in cramped buses and vans, jalan jalan in Lao villages, snapping pics with my new digi cam, writing entries in my (paper) journal and bargaining at the night market in Luang Prabang. But today is my first free day. And instead of joining my group mates (who left for Bangkok today), I decided to stay in Vientiane for ... read more

Asia » India » Uttar Pradesh » Agra August 24th 2005

The Taj Mahal (meaning crown palace) is situated in the industrial town of Agra about 200km southeast of Delhi in Uttar Pradesh. I was compelled to get up early and see the Taj Mahal at sunrise as this is the best time to see it apparently, I was not disappointed. I entered through the east gate at 6.30 am. The Taj Mahal is the resting place of Emperor Shah Jahan's second wife, Mumtaz Mahal who died during labour. The white marble building houses her tomb and is surrounded by very well kept gardens and a red sandstone perimeter wall that makes an wonderful contrast to the white marble of the Taj Mahal proper. To the west of the tomb is a mosque and to keep the symmetrical balance on the east is a guest house of ... read more
