Hello from Guangzhou! Stace and I LOVE reading your comments! It’s a lot of fun, and a great way to end the day! :) We’re sorry we can’t answer them individually, but keep sending them our way! It’s like camp mail call all over again for us! This is our second to last stop on the Adoption from China Tour. We took an early flight this morning and had to miss our hotel breakfast buffet, so there was the potential for crankiness (and not just on Sarah’s part). But thankfully, Sarah did really well on the flight (her first airplane ride!) after munching on leftovers and rice cereal. Mom and dad just survived on adrenaline until we got to McDonald’s in Guangzhou and to our new room for a 3 hour nap! The air is thick ... read more

In my last report i forgot to mention the fortune teller that came over to Xuan's familys house and read my future. There where about 12 people in the room and im sure all of them know my future better then me. Let me explain. He looked at me, looked at my hands and then commenced talking for about 10min, then Xuan would look at me and said "28 is good age to get married", then he would talk for another 10min or so, pointing at his heart and the sky and waving his hands, then Xuan would look at me and say "next year will not be so good for you", this went on for about 40 min or so. Some how i think there was something lost in the translation. He did mention that ... read more

I was quite fortunate to meet Michael from Germany in the bus line up from Bankok airport. Sometimes arriving in a new city can be a confusing start, so it was a relief to traipse the areas near KoSan Road looking for accomodation with somebody elses' input as well. The last thing I expected was to share a room with him, but when a twin works out cheaper than a single-why not? We started the next day jumping on board a ferry up the Chao Phraya River towards ChinaTown. Walking into the maze of market traders was a loud and smelly experience that for some strange reason is a feature within Bankok. Why do we love it so? It's certainly not home and that's a big plus, but I suppose it's just a shopping haven. Yes, ... read more

16-8 Blog This afternoon we visited some rustic markets; small shops selling a mixture of authentic and counterfeit goods. There was even a street dedicated to undergarments and flip-flops! After buying some new socks, we met up with Michelle’s sister for Chengdu’s most famous dish, hotpot (literally translated, fire pot). It was not as hot as I thought, and served with a garlic and coriander dip, it was quite a delicate balance of flavours. Served with a Chinese flower tea that was topped up using unusual teapots and methods. (The picture explains it better.) 17-8 Blog A group of 5 of us travelled to Leshan to start meeting Michelle’s extended family, and some sight seeing. I met her uncle and auntie, two of her cousins and her fathers parents. We were treated to a delightful meal ... read more

Here is some information on Shanghai from Wikipedia and Travel China Guide. Flight to Shanghai It seems the word got out about my abuse of the First Class lounge privileges in Xi’an. When I walked in to the lounge in Guilin, they looked at my pass, then at me, and made clear that I was entitled to only a single soda and snack. Our tour guide in Shanghai was Wu, a middle aged women that we never really learned much about personally. Wu was conservative in her behavior like Rose, but seemed to be a little sneakier in her behavior. She honestly didn’t seem all that interested in keeping to the tour schedule…pretty much showing disdain for most of the sights. Made us all wonder why she was a tour guide in the first place. We ... read more

We arrived here the day before yesterday after at least 20 hrs of travelling, it was a long one and once we arrived we were ready to sleep forever. So we have been having a good few lie ins. Malaysia is so different to anywhere else, there are so many different cultures and religions here. Its unbelivable how much can change in so little space. It feels good to leave Thailand as we felt we had done enough there. We managed to find the lovliest little guesthouse ( Its called stardust, if anyone reading this is coming this way) the man that runs it is so helpful and friendly. It feels more like we are staying at someones house than in a guesthouse. We found the nearest shoppign mall and its very westernised we had a ... read more

On just the third day, Sarah has already earned a nickname. As if she isn’t already confused enough with the new language and new names (Sarah Michelle, Lai Jing - her new Chinese name), now we’ve gotten to calling her “Ah-boo-boo”!  She’s got this incredibly cute manner of bubbling with her lips when she’s pouting. I suppose it’s our way of finding faces in the clouds during a thunderstorm, and this girl sure does rain tears a lot. Sarah’s still very needy and clingy, and will rarely sit or walk on her own. So, when mama or baba are tired and/or busy, and can’t hold her…she starts to cry. I think it must have been a baby like Sarah who was the object when the term “cry-baby” was first coined! Stacey and I both agree ... read more

Wednesday (I think...) I settled myself into my 4 berth, air conditioned sleeper destined for Hue. I was sharing with a Vietnamese family of 4. Mum and Dad worked for the Vietnamese Governement and spoke almost fluent English, their 7 yr old son could speak and pronounce better english than what I could, and their 2 yr old son who was just sooooo cute... (he couldnt speak english, but we'll let him off cos he couldnt speak Vietnamese either!) I had THE BEST nights sleep on the train ever! Until I was woken at 6am by some wailing Vietnamese woman's singing being piped through the speakers! We were served Beef noodles for breakfast (hey... I'll eat anything at any hour... not fussy!) Well, it was kinda like a pot noodle. There was a big tank of ... read more

Jiuhuashan, nine brilliant mountains, is one of China's great Buddhist peaks, and was founded in the XII century when a Korean monk believed to be the reincarnation of somebody holy and revered met his end. After a five hour coach trip from Nanjing, up along the bank of the wide Yangzi, passengers disembarked to pay the steep park entry before boarding the complimentary mini bus lift to the village of Jiuhuashan. Shrouded in mist, the village is encircled by a road connecting the temples and guesthouses, small hotels and eateries and countless shops selling overpriced wood sculptures, dried foods, teas, umbrellas, music, instruments, pendants, everything but postcards. In the late afternoon I settle into the pension, accept a cup of hot oolong tea and shower before strolling to nearby Dabei Lou where monks young and old ... read more
