Hello!!! Here's the news for yesterday: Yesterday, I spent most of the day lying in bed in a ridiculous amount of pain. I stared out the window for a long time, and as I watched an old woman with a bandage on her leg begging for change, I thought about how lucky I am to be sick and, at least in this country, affluent. Health care IS free here, but still, I thought about all the people in the world that have had shingles (or much, much worse) that couldn't lie around in a nice, warm bed and relax. Even though shingles seriously sucks, I could be in a lot worse places, and I started feeling very thankful for my situation and my life. The gratitude gave me access to feeling very peaceful. The weather outside ... read more

Asia » Japan » Kyoto August 28th 2005

We decided to go to Kyoto on Thursday to prepare ourselves for the "official" tour on Friday. It ended up being only Jim, Chris and myself, and we set out pretty late. We did manage to get to the Kyoto Museum before it closed, which was nice but kind of lacking. I thought they would have more Bakumatsu stuff, but I didn't really see any at all. I did learn they once had a Shinsengumi exhibit, which made me very jealous! After that we walked around the area near Sanjo and eventually made it up to around the Imperial Palace, which was of course closed and dark. The grounds are HUGE, though! Then we went to Marutamachi and headed home. Friday was supposed to be the tour, but we decided to go it alone by train ... read more

In some places the waves were mysteriously selective. Two houses stand while the one between is gone. In other places entire neighborhoods have been erased. A wall stands here, a kitchen sink over there; a spiral staircase leads nowhere. And where have the former occupants gone? In Sri Lanka alone 40,000 stories ended terribly that day. In many cases even the people who might have been left behind to remember those stories were washed away too. Total erasure. The survivors occupy tents and temporary huts provided by Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, UNICEF, and others. What would it have been like to be one of the first people to arrive on the scene? It must have been an unthinkable landscape of death and misery. Even now there are white flags along the road indicating that people ... read more

... read more

Is it Saturday already?! Just a week ago the two of us were in Beijing, thoroughly enjoying our tours of the capital, and now, in a blink of an eye, the three of us are here in Guangzhou - - and Godfrey and I can’t imagine life without our precious gift of baby Sarah. We are having a wonderful trip…it’s impossible to fully describe it all. There have been some quiet moments when I’m holding Sarah as she’s drifting off to sleep, and I can reflect on the journey that the Lrd has led us on. It’s infinitely beyond what I could have imagined. I know deep in my heart that Sarah is Father’s best for us, and we are so grateful and in awe of his plan in this miracle of adoption. Last night at ... read more

Asia » China » Tibet August 27th 2005

Hi again, Lhasa, "the ground of the gods" in Tibetan, is a very special city. It has a strong spiritual feeling, full of temples, monks, pilgrims, etc. And right above it all roams the Potala palace, the house of the Dalai Lamas that is currently a huge museum. This enormous structure is amazing, and when I entered the city and saw it for the first time I really missed a heart beat. It also has a long history, and is the heart of the struggle between the Tibetans and the "liberating" Chinese. I don't want to go into too much detail regarding the China-Tibet situation, because it is hard to know the facts as a visitor. It is always easy to lean towards the weak and demand the liberation of the conquered country. But there are ... read more

Asia » Japan » Okinawa » Miyakojima August 27th 2005

Sun, fun and fantastic company, that's what I've experienced over the last few days, how about you? Let me make you feel even more jealous! Where do I begin? Well, I caught a ferry from Ishigaki to Miyakojima on Thursday morning, a 6.45am ferry so it was a very early start. I didn't have any problems this time, I had doubled checked the day before where the ferry would be leaving from and I went to the ticket office to get a boarding pass and room number so all was fine this time! The boat trip took 6 hours but because I had got up early that morning I spent the whole time sleeping as did mostly everyone else. When we arrived in Miyakojima it was a beautiful day (and it has been beautiful weather ever ... read more

Asia » China » Zhejiang » Shaoxing August 27th 2005

180rmb/night got me a spacious top floor back corner room in a three star hotel overlooking lush green Fushan park. Complete with complimentary teas, a shower cap, a bubble bath and a sauna to keep me entertained while the electrical storm pelted the city centre just outside my ridiculously large aquarium windows. I hadn't planned on Shaoxing but exiting from Huangzhou's bus station, having just arrived from small-city Tunxi and its quaint surrounding villages, I felt put off by the crowds and the thought that any kind of sightseeing in the area was going to be a pre-packaged sorta deal, myself just a cog in an endless chain of tourists filing around Xi Hu, reacting as prescribed to the many wondrous pavilions and temples and nearby tea plantations. Had it been the low season... Shaoxin was ... read more

Asia » Japan » Hiroshima August 27th 2005

My first weekend at home in Innoshima was a complete success! August is festival month in Japan, and this weekend it was the Summer festival in Innoshima. My friends Stacey and Allison joined me for some island fun! On Saturday evening there was a big celebration at the beach. There were hundreds of people there, to watch dance performances, taiko drumming, fire parades, and a lot of chanting. The night started with performances by the children, who were really cute....and will probably all be my students in a couple of weeks! Most of the people were dressed in antique-style army gear. Innoshima used to be the home of a pirate naval base in the 1400s, so it probably has something to do with that. One of the highlights of the night was the lighting of two ... read more
