My address in Turkmenistan for the FIRST THREE MONTHS OF SERVICE is as follows: ___________________________________ PCT Stephen W. Smith U.S. Peace Corps/Turkmenistan PO Box 258, Krugozor Central Post Office Ashgabat, 744000 Turkmenistan VIA ISTANBUL ______________________________________ Via Istanbul should be written somewhere on the envelope. This prevents it from going to Moscow, which they say delays everything. Mail is rumored to take up to a month or more to arrive in Ashgabat. Since I leave in a month, and you ever planned on communicating, please start writing to me now! It's going to be a long few years if I don't recieve any letters. Email will be difficult and sporadic, so please, please, please, send letters, NOW. best, S... read more

Hey folks, Have got a little bit of time on the internet, so going to bring you up to date... Got on the bus to Ho Chi Minh City on Tuesday night. Managed to sleep a little bit (bit not a lot!) Got chatting to the guy sat behind me, Mark, who was heading to Saigon and then out to the Mekong Delta. We stopped off a couple of places along the way... just for locals to try to sellus a load of food! Had a couple of hours in Nha Trang before the next bus left... saw the sun rise (yup, we got there early!) and then had some bread and eggs for breakfast! Back on the bus, got to see more of the scenery, but no more comfortable a journey... think the aim of ... read more

Sorry About That I'm lazy and it's late, but I wanted to get back on the blog to let everyone know I'm not dead. I'll edit this later, so that there will be pictures. But for now. Dancing Santa Today I met with one of my conversation partners. On the way to the coffee shop, we passed a store with dancing Santa Claus robot in the window. It did sort of a hip shimmy, and it was dressed in a black sweatsuit, instead of the traditional Xmas red and white. It was like Santa Claus doing Jolly Training for the winter. I imagine a table laden with thousands of cookies, and Santa with a scared rabbit look in his eyes, as part of the training, as well as some sort of obstacle course made of shingles. ... read more

We’re here…our last stop before returning to the states. Our journey from Guangzhou to HK, a total distance of about 100 miles, took 7 hours from door to door. If my math is correct, that’s about 14 miles an hour. We could have almost biked it faster. The flight itself was only 40 minutes. The rest was traveling to, from and waiting at the airport. One of the nice things was having limousine service from HK to our YMCA hotel. Well, it wasn’t exactly a limo, but it was a nice Toyota minivan that I’ve never seen before in the states. We had purchased a bus shuttle transfer to the hotel, but when they took a look at Sarah, the manager said, “For you, Mr. and Mrs. Hom, we have a limo waiting for you!” Ha! ... read more

The last few days have been a blast! Saturday I taught at the JAC until 11:40 and was scheduled for another class there at 4:00. In those 4 hours between classes, Snow and I just hung around and did some shopping. We headed over to Silver Plaza and all the way down the street there were a bunch of mean selling these small aluminum cans. Turns out that they're crickets, and you can buy them for anywhere from 1 RMB to 50 RMB and then FIGHT them and bet money on them. We saw a couple of fights, where a bunch of men gather around a tupperware container on the sidewalk, dump their crickets in and watch them fight! We didn't stay to see if they fought to the death or not. We went to Silver ... read more

Yep, we've traded in the lifejackets, helmets and paddles for a new pair of site boots, a scale ruler and a PC... We've both started work as Development Managers with Hokkaido Tracks, a small but rapidly expanding development and property management company right here in sleepy little Hirafu village! We're on contract until the end of November before flying home for Jimmy & Isley's wedding in early December. Who would have thought it were possible to negotiate terms and land a job like this when you're wearing boardshorts, bikinis and thongs! Omoshiroi! Currently, we're overseeing two projects under construction (18 apartments in total) and working on the sketch design & working drawing phase of another 32 apartment project. All apartments are western style (Australian sheek!), including the one we're living in, Hokkaido Tracks' first project, 'First ... read more

Okay - had some complaints about not writing anything. I thought that I had nothing to write, and I still think that I have nothing to write, but being bored at work and sitting at the computer is sooo much better than staring at my desk. So, here I go. This week has been great. On Monday night Niel and I went to the beach for a barbeque. He had a couple of Japanese friends that were cooking out and drinking beers. Turns out that it was a party of 20 Japanese around the college age. And when I say cooking out, they cooked for 4 hours straight. They grilled most of the food, beef, chicken, eggplant, and sweet potatoes on the beach in a portable griller. Humm… it was good. And quite funny to watch ... read more

We have arrived in Singapore! Oregon gave us a very fitting send off, 60 degrees and raining which was a surprise after the perfect summer weather we had been having. Our flight between Portland and LA was as normal as it could be thought it was delayed a bit by the lightning and hail. I do love Oregon :-) The topper for that leg of our journey was the 8-year-old who was belching on the backs of our heads while we waited for the plane to arrive. LAX wasn't too bad. Our walk to the international terminal was quite nice due to the ocean breeze that was blowing in. After checking in for our 9:20pm flight we had dinner and waited for the plane to arrive. When we got on we were very surprisedat how nice ... read more
