We opted to take a three day and two night trip into the World Heritage Site of Halong Bay. Boarded our junk in Halong City in the chaotic port and eventually negotiated our way out of the harbour. We stopped at the largest cave in the bay and some time wandering around the caverns listening to the echoes and being told some of the legends of this area. That afternoon, Juliet and I opted for a refreshing swim in the open water of the South China Sea -Sara chose to be the photographer. A jump from the top deck of the boat (after some persuasion from Juliet) resulted in a fantastic bruise on my arm from the impact with the water - I need to perfect my water entries!! We changed boats in order to sail ... read more

We got our internet access last week and our shipment from the US arrived on Friday which means that we have our computer so we can update the blog! So much has happened in the past two weeks. I will try to break it up into a couple postings. Our first day in Singapore (Wednesday) was pretty mellow since we were still adjusting to the time change. Phil’s mom took us to a local mall to show us what we might expect to see in Penang. Asian malls are not totally different from US malls in the kinds of shops they have, but their largest store is usually a supermarket instead of a department store. Some of the bigger ones have both. The particular grocery store we visited was Cold Storage. I was surprised and pleased ... read more

Our final full day in Asia…it’s been a long journey, and we enjoyed every minute of it (well, maybe not EVERY minute, but most of the minutes). At the same time, we are SOOO looking forward to going home. When the trip started on August 18, we tried to imagine what life would be like on our return flight to the U.S., and, well…it’s pretty much come true…and then some. Some things we didn’t bargain for were the illnesses and soreness. Mama and baba are still struggling with a cough (keeping us up at night) and baba’s got some various aches and pains (sore foot/ankle, mild chills). I’ve got my foot propped up with ice as I write this. Sarah was mildly intrigued by baba’s infirmed state, but hasn’t stopped her from messin’ with baba. Boo-boo’s ... read more

I arrived in Phnom Penh yesterday and I have been on the whirlwind tourist circuit ever since. I am staying at Okay Guesthouse - the sister guesthouse of the place I stayed at in Siem Reap. It's got a nice backpackers atmosphere. They assigned me a moter-bike driver right away which was nice yesterday but it's now kind of annoying me. The poor guy is supposed to look-after me during my entire stay it seems. Every time I come downstairs he hands me the menu and tries to get me to order food from the house restaurant. If decline he hounds me about where I want to go and I know he's watching my every move. Luckily I met my Irish friends here so we are all in the same boat with the over-attentive motorbike drivers. ... read more

My address in Turkmenistan for the FIRST THREE MONTHS OF SERVICE is as follows: ___________________________________ PCT Stephen W. Smith U.S. Peace Corps/Turkmenistan PO Box 258, Krugozor Central Post Office Ashgabat, 744000 Turkmenistan VIA ISTANBUL ______________________________________ Via Istanbul should be written somewhere on the envelope. This prevents it from going to Moscow, which they say delays everything. Mail is rumored to take up to a month or more to arrive in Ashgabat. Since I leave in a month, and you ever planned on communicating, please start writing to me now! It's going to be a long few years if I don't recieve any letters. Email will be difficult and sporadic, so please, please, please, send letters, NOW. best, S... read more

Hey folks, Have got a little bit of time on the internet, so going to bring you up to date... Got on the bus to Ho Chi Minh City on Tuesday night. Managed to sleep a little bit (bit not a lot!) Got chatting to the guy sat behind me, Mark, who was heading to Saigon and then out to the Mekong Delta. We stopped off a couple of places along the way... just for locals to try to sellus a load of food! Had a couple of hours in Nha Trang before the next bus left... saw the sun rise (yup, we got there early!) and then had some bread and eggs for breakfast! Back on the bus, got to see more of the scenery, but no more comfortable a journey... think the aim of ... read more

Sorry About That I'm lazy and it's late, but I wanted to get back on the blog to let everyone know I'm not dead. I'll edit this later, so that there will be pictures. But for now. Dancing Santa Today I met with one of my conversation partners. On the way to the coffee shop, we passed a store with dancing Santa Claus robot in the window. It did sort of a hip shimmy, and it was dressed in a black sweatsuit, instead of the traditional Xmas red and white. It was like Santa Claus doing Jolly Training for the winter. I imagine a table laden with thousands of cookies, and Santa with a scared rabbit look in his eyes, as part of the training, as well as some sort of obstacle course made of shingles. ... read more

We’re here…our last stop before returning to the states. Our journey from Guangzhou to HK, a total distance of about 100 miles, took 7 hours from door to door. If my math is correct, that’s about 14 miles an hour. We could have almost biked it faster. The flight itself was only 40 minutes. The rest was traveling to, from and waiting at the airport. One of the nice things was having limousine service from HK to our YMCA hotel. Well, it wasn’t exactly a limo, but it was a nice Toyota minivan that I’ve never seen before in the states. We had purchased a bus shuttle transfer to the hotel, but when they took a look at Sarah, the manager said, “For you, Mr. and Mrs. Hom, we have a limo waiting for you!” Ha! ... read more
