i dont really have anything very exciting to tell you people.... well we did rent scooters which was so much fun... after we got the hang of it. The lovely man that we got them from spoke very little english, needless to say his instructions for how to work the damn thing were minimal. "Gas here , break here" and we were off. we are still at the same place in koh chang, we are here for one more night then off to Bangkok. It was nice to see some of you guys on the webcam!!! we should do that again. I'm going to need some dance lessons when i get back grampy. Raj thank you for the comment and ratting me out about your car!! just so you all know i was allowed to take ... read more

Just managed to find an internet which would let us access this page, so here goes for the last few days........... our second day in phuket was cool, cruising around on the bike and chilling out. Here are a few more photos of the sunsets, they were amazing! LEft phuket early morning, and the bus was on time for a first! woohoo! We then got a ferry to Phi phi island, which only took one and half hours which was good. we arrived here before our hotel room had even been checked out, so we dumped bags and headed for the shops and beach. It is beautiful here, loads of little places to explore and the water is clear and blue - great for snorkelling. We headed back to the hotel and cooled off in the ... read more

Geo: 33.9184, 108.719The highlight of this job is the panda conservation project and sometimes I have the very difficult job of visiting it! The project is set in absolutely stunning scenery, at the base of green mountains dotted with magical countryside huts. The government wrote this area off as 'too poor' for foreigners but in reality a foreigner couldn't see a better side of China than this place! It's a bit of a step trek up the mountains but well worth it. It's also possible to ride a horse up but I trust my trusty walking boots more than a possibly tempermental horsey! Panda conservation is amazing especially in the morning before the pandas take to their usual slumber positions. I was accompanying Mark, a visiting journalist from the Telegraph and got the chance to experience ... read more

I flew from Hanoi to Hue to cut out a 15 hour bus journey through what is not the most exciting area of Vietnam. The main reason I visited Hue was to see the imperial citadel. Most of the citadel was destroyed during the 1968 Tet offensive, when the Viet Cong flag flew over the citadel for weeks. Though it has been heavily renovated, you can still see bullet holes in a few places. The citadel was quite interesting and the government is carrying out extensive renovations. It looked like a smaller version of the Forbidden City in Beijing. The constant harassment of the moto and cyclo drivers is annoying, but you just have to be firm and ignore them when they follow you. On the second day, I took a boat trip to the imperial ... read more

Zum anderen gibt ... read more

The southeastern coastal state of Kerala is known for its tropical landscape and laidback atmosphere, so when the opportunity came to spend a week there with my friend Emma, I didn’t hesitate to join her. Our itinerary was seven days long: traveling by train, we would reach the village of our friend Mini in time for the Keralan New Year, Veeshu. After spending a few days in the village, we were to visit some Americans volunteering around the city of Cochin. The train journey, one way, was a long and tiresome 26 hours. Being the cheap ladies Emma and I are, we booked tickets in second class ‘sleeper’, wherein you share a small compartment with 5 other travelers. During waking hours, three people share a long seat and at night we each have a bed mat ... read more

It was late Friday night while I was blogging away at the internet, 2 seats down from me was a man, swatting at mosquitoes, cursing at the mouse that sticks, and performing a series of dramatic huffs and sighs. I wasn’t paying too much mind at first, but as he grew agitated with the ever-present fluttering and buzzing creatures of the night, I reached into my bag and handed him some repellent. I looked over, late 40s, nice clothes, nice shoes, good watch, well-groomed, but what stopped me was a very sad face, one that looked like it hadn’t really smiled in a very long time. I stopped typing and asked him one question, "so where are you from?" ...a green light to proceed into a mini-life story. Joe is in his mid-40s from San Francisco. ... read more

We signed up for the Secret Wall Tour, thinking that it would be the best way to experience the Great Wall. We got loads of recommendations off people about it, "there is a little bit of a hill" they said. Jaysus, it's a big hill, a dangerous climb down, especially when Eileen dislodged a boulder and sent it flying down to hit Irene on the back of the knee! Was very funny though, was a brilliant day, you trek up to the Great Wall, it's not restored at all - it's undiscovered part of the Great Wall, so you will see the wall literally as it was built. There is no ticket entrance or cable car, and there are no peddlars!! You don't see any other tourists until the end. After, we had done our trek ... read more

"Go jump off that high cliff" he told me. "Okay!" It sounded like a stupid answer but that was what it felt like, being in another culture, having to follow the every beck and command of those that one has made closest friends with. It's what I feel like I'm doing sometimes. "I want you to translate this for me." "Okay what is it?" I asked her as I continued to pedal. "Hang on, I'll get it for you." She went and showed me the sheet. It was all in characters. I recognized some but knew I would never be able to translate it how it was. "Can you read it to me and then I'll translate it?" "Um, okay." She looked at me a little skeptically. "I can't read it." "Okay" she told me as ... read more
