Felicia’s been working on a grant for the past week, so we haven’t gone out at all except for food. Today we went to the Chinese Embassy to get visas, but the visa section was closed. We took a taxi to see the Ananda Samakhon Throne Hall, which was commissioned by Rama V. Its design is heavily influenced by St. Peter’s Cathedral and is a truly magnificent piece of architecture, a blend of Italian Renaissance and Thai styles. Unfortunately, you can’t take pictures inside…We also perused the “Royal Paraphernalia” - carriages, thrones, the royal tuk-tuk, etc. After the Thrown Hall, we stopped in for a look at the Royal Elephant National Museum. Then we walked to Khaosan Rd. for a late lunch at United Travelers Center, our favorite place to get Israeli food. ... read more

Today we went to a section of the wall in Mutianyu, where it's a little less crowded, but more importantly....it has a cable car to get to the top. If we walked it would take over three hours. To reach the cable car you must first pass many street vendors all yelling for your attention. HEY LADY, T-shirt only $1, then it's 2/1.00. On the way up they say, OK see you later. On the way down it's, Hey I remember you....... T-shirt 3/1.00. It's unbelievable they could build this wall on such rocky and treacherous ground. This section of the wall dates from 1368 and was built upon the foundations of the original wall during the Northern Qi dynasty (AD 55-577). This section also has a series of watchtowers which served as signal towers, forts, ... read more

hehe... good one. :) Well, yesterday we went on a crazy adventure to Kyoto in search of Geisha. This involved catching a local train to Shin-Yokahama, then catching a bullet train (or shinkansen) down to Kyoto. The shinkansen travels at around 300km per hour, when one travels through a station without stopping, the ground shakes, and a 15 carriage train passes in like 10 seconds... very cool. So we got off in Kyoto, then caught the Japenese subway to Shijo, where our hotel was (very nice, very central, very cool). Unfortunately, we had gotten used to the warm weather in Tokyo, and hadn't thought to bring much warm gear, and it was rainy, and quite chilly in Kyoto, so that was... interesting. Yesterday afternoon we went and checked out the Golden Pavillon, this temple covered in ... read more

Written on Friday Hey! Lots to say. I'm trying to adapt to the lifestyle here, but it is a lot different and a lot harder than I expected. Trite, yeah, but damn - this is going take some time before I'm used to this. After a scant 4 hours of sleep, my sister kindly drove me to SFO and managed to get through the U.S. end of the passport deally without any real difficulty. You know that big suitcase, though, the one we thought was less than 50 lbs for sure? Yeah, 'twas pushing 80. Turns out there isn't a charge, though, for overstepping the 50 lbs limit as long as it is under 75. So after a minor reshuffle, all was good. The plane ride was long but marked by brief periods of acute and ... read more

A slow day in work, I’ve finished an inconclusive study into why wheelnuts occasionally drop off certain buses on certain routes, always the nearside rear wheel. There doesn’t seem to be anything particularly odd about the vehicles or route, but there’s plenty of evidence to suggest there’s a problem somewhere. The highlight of the day is Japanese for lunch… Walking home from the train stop before my own, the number of street beggars in this part of time struck me, often older men and women holding bowls. It seems that beggars in the UK are rarely older, although perhaps the colder winters kill them sooner? I know a crisp evening took the life of one of Bath’s homeless community last year. In the evening I meet my brother’s godfather, Ronald, and his wife for dinner in ... read more

Generally the food is good in Cambodia. There are some cuisines that you must try. They are such as amok in coconut, lok lat fried beef, amok grilled in banana leaf, chicken in palm sugar, sour soup, green curry with vegetable …etc. Most of the curry cuisines are not spicy. The best reasonable price of this food is at local restaurant of Old Market area. We spent 3 nights at Pub street’s bar. The drink is cheap compare with Malaysia, USD 2.50 per beer or cocktail and buys 2 free 1. The fresh fruit shake is good also cost 2000 Riel (around RM1.80) ... read more

Interesting Beijing facts of the day: there are 13 million people, 3.5 million cars, 10 million bicycles. Motorbikes are not allowed in the city. Traffic is so intense here and such crazy driving, but I only saw one accident. Of course we had to make a pit stop at a jade factory. After much negogiation we picked up two pieces. We went to an Opera tonight also. Food included, yuck. First bad meal this entire trip.... read more
