After thoroughly enjoying my time in Vietnam, I headed off on an eneventful bus ride to Phnom Penh, the capitol of Cambodia. The city suprised me by being a normal big city, and even more suprising, I learned from the people I was traveling with that there is more American food available in a Cambodian grocery store than in London. However, before I explain the places I visited in Phnom Penh, a brief history lesson on Cambodia might help explain the two main museums. After a civil war that ended in 1975, Cambodia suffered under the ultra-communist Khmer Rouge regime, which stayed in power until 1979. Under the leadership of the paranoid Pol Pot, the goal of the Khmer Rouge was to "turn the clock back to year zero" and instate a rural utopia consisting of ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sarawak » Bario April 20th 2006

I loved this place sooooo much! I saw and did so many things that it's very hard to know where to start so it's quite likely that this will be a very disjointed blog. As a rough outline though: Bario is set in the middle of primary rainforest close to the border with Kalimantan and home to the Kelabit people. I stayed with a friendly family who I became very attached to by the end. They fed me constantly with unlimited amounts of Milo and copious amounts of food - including wild boar, deer, porcupine and python! Without road access things become very expensive and the community seems to be living mostly off food from the jungle - both meat and veg. There is heaps to do in Bario if you don't mind rain mud and ... read more

At the end of my last entry, I was pulling in to Amritsar, home to the holiest temple of the Sikhs. This was a bit of an unexpected detour - I had thought I was going to go straight for the mountains, but I figured that the Golden Temple had to be on the cover of the Eyewitness Guide to India for a reason. After some inquiries, I learned that it could be arranged to make it a stop on the route to the mountains, and it's always advisable to make a stopover on a bus trip that would otherwise take 24 hours. I had to bring the full force of my bargaining skills to bear to get the autorickshaw driver to take me to my hotel for the perfectly-reasonable price of 30 rupees. He started ... read more

We went along to the Summer Palace today - situated in the western outskirts of Haidian District, the Summer Palace is 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) from central Beijing.…we met Danny and the Danish girl Lisa at reception and ended up getting a taxi with them over to the Palace. Danny had a massive argument with the driver cause he switched off the meter when we were in the bank…can you imagine the problems trying to explain that to a Chinese taxi man?! Constructed in the Jin Dynasty (1115-1234), during the succeeding reign of feudal emperors; it was extended continuously. By the time of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), it had become a luxurious royal garden providing royal families with rest and entertainment. Composed mainly of Longevity Hill and Kunming Lake, The Summer Palace occupies an area of ... read more

The traffic noise is deafening, yet I find myself crouched behind the counter in the lobby of my door-less hotel-come-brothel, a finger in one ear and a phone to the other, struggling to conduct an interview with my future boss in Korea. Luckily neither of us can really understand the other in the din, so it is decided the best thing for me to do is write an essay on 'The teaching of English as a foreign language in Korea'. During my 45 minute flight from Cebu to Palawan the following morning, I eat my airplane snack, drink my coffee and put the finishing touches to my essay. I know nothing whatsoever about teaching …or Korea for that matter. So after completing my three page plagiarized master piece, I feel pretty pleased for myself. I'd arrived ... read more

So yeah Meir PROPOSED TO ME, this is actually relatively old news I just haven't writen in a while. And when i say relatively old i mean 2 weeks ago, but by now all my close friends and family know. It happened in a weekend away in Ooty, in a beautiful hotel which we paid about as much for as we pay rent in mysore. But it was so lovely, and it had a bathtub (first i've seen in india) and big screen tv, so basically we spent the whole weekend lazing around doing absolutely nothing. We went and saw the botanical gardens and I did some shopping but that was IT!. We're planning on a spring wedding next year, two actually, one in canada and one in israel. Telling my parents was interesting, i don't ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » North » Siem Reap April 20th 2006

Chenelle and I vegged out for a day and did nothing at all, except drink beer and use the internet. Siem Reap is a full-fledged tourist town near the Temples of Angkor. Away from the cheap tourist town is the Rodeo Drive of hotels. Apparently, there is a huge influx of Asian tourists to the region, so there are lots of people getting in on the market (blah!). I'm staying at a nice hotel with Chenelle b/c my dad knows a hotel owner in Cambodia. I'm delighted. Chenelle and I agreed to wake up at the crack of dawn to watch the sunrise at Angkor, but despite our efforts, we got there at 6 a.m. and we managed to beat the thousands of tourists, but not the hundreds who apparently had the same plan as us. ... read more

Asia » China » Beijing » Great Wall of China April 20th 2006

The Great Wall of China, one of the greatest wonders of the world, was enlisted in the World Heritage by UNESCO in 1987. Just like a gigantic dragon, the Great Wall winds up and down across deserts, grasslands, mountains and plateaus stretching approximately 6,700 kilometers (4,163 miles ) from east to west of China. With a history of more than 2000 years, some of the section of the great wall are now in ruins or even entirely disappeared. However, it is still one of the most appealing attractions all around the world owing to its architectural grandeur and historical significance. After having a rewarding experience getting to Chichen Itza on our own via public transportation, we decided that we could do it again in China from Beijing to Mutianyu. From our guest house near Wangfujing we ... read more
