Because our bus had been late that morning going to the Great Wall we all got free beer that night. We also ended up trying Rice Wine, which is disgusting and not recommended to anyone!... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Kowloon April 20th 2006

As a stopping off point on our way to China, it was pretty hard to fault Hong Kong. A fusion of British capitalism and Chinese culture, the city has skyscrapers and shopping malls that sit alongside Chinese temples and food markets, whilst down in the harbors, traditional Chinese Sampans (albeit now just for tourism) ply their trade alongside luxury private yachts. We took in most of the main sites in Hong Kong, although none of them seemed to have the impact of the great outdoors we experienced in Africa. We took the cross harbour ferry, we took a Sampan ride at Aberdeen harbour, we took an old tram through Central and we took the peak tram up to Hong Kong's highest point. The overwhelming feeling you get is that Hong Kong is still an incredibly dynamic ... read more

When I finally got back up to Ernakaulam, 3 hours after I was originally there!!! I finally lucked out that day and the bus going to the ferry to get to Fort Cochin was the first one I bumped into! ok it was a 10 minute journey but simple pleasures n all that. Arrived and strudged with my backpack to the town...all in an effort to save money and get a bit of excercise. Was met by a bloke who did the usual look at this hotel line, after taking me to a few that were full we finally got to another homestay. Despite the viscious dog experience last time I had still enjoyed the experience and decided that the room wasn't bad for the price, bathroom actually had a bath...bit ropey but still it had ... read more

Trains, Thai Chi & Chinese Officials So I've promised never to fill out Dom's custom's forms for him again. After kindly filling out both our forms on the ferry from Hong Kong to mainland China, upon disembarkment our tour group were kept waiting over 15 minutes - whilst Dom was interrogated in a small room by very serious and scary looking officials for an inconsistency in his name on the paper work. Oh dear!! In my defense however, I have to say that I have never been the best of spellers and when you have 4 names with confusing Italian spelling, I can't blame the Chinese officals for giving Mr Domenico Giuseppe John Salomoni a once-over... ;) Following a one night stop off at Guangzhou, we boarded what would be the first of 6 sleeper ... read more

Asia » Japan » Osaka April 20th 2006

We had a busy day. After picking up coffee from Starbucks we got on a train to go to Osaka-jo. We got off a few stops early, but realized our mistake quickly, and got back on. We found the castle quickly and walked up the long way -- through the gardens and moats. We got to the top right at 9am, and there were a TON of students there. We went inside and got to go to the top and look out over Osaka. Very cool. The other floors had a lot of history of the castle and time period. One had these windows you looked in and they had holograms! (I think). The moving video of people were projected into these 3-D models/scenes. So awesome to watch. Afterwards we went to Tonnoji-Koen. On the way ... read more

Last night I was so tired I fell asleep before writing. oops. My 11.5 hour flight was slightly painful, but smooth, and I survived with very few complaints. I did much better than I thought I would. They fed us pretty well, and we had personal movie screens and seven movies to choose from. That helped. When we arrived we got through customs quickly, got our JR passes activated and jumped on a train to Osaka. The train ride took about an hour, and I was getting really tired - but it was great getting to watch out the windows at all the houses and buildings and people. At the stations there were always a place holding a ton of bicycles. I enjoyed seeing the school girls in their uniforms and all the business men in ... read more

... a land where you don't pay any taxes, where free health care, free schools etc etc is available for all... oh and retirement is around 50!! Sounds like heaven! The only tiny weeny downside for me (and not to give the impression that I'm an alcoholic!) is that as of 1991 you can't buy any alcohol here - so that's no after work drink, no glass of vino with dinner in a restaurant, nothing. We saw the impact of this as we got off the ferry from Kota Kinabalu at Labuan - still part of Sabah this island is at the mouth of Brunei Bay and is where you get the ferry to Brunei... and has the largest concentration of duty free alcohol shops I've ever seen!! So many I was surprised they could all ... read more

Asia » Laos April 20th 2006

So this is where we ended up for my birthday. We were thinking somewhere south in Thailand or Cambodia but extending our stay in Asia 10 days meant we could take our trip thru Laos more casually. We ended up staying at an average guest house, but for US$12 you can’t complain. We were told nothing but to “get out of Vientaine, there’s nothing to see”, so we had no real expectations. We decided to stay for the main reason that we didn’t really want to be traveling on some scummy train/bus on my birthday. Gald we did cos we’ve both really like the place. Last night we had one of our best dinners yet in SE Asia. It was this really classy joint that served Indian, Thai, Laos, Chinese, Vietnamese, Italian and Western. We ate ... read more

Asia » China » Shanxi » Datong April 20th 2006

Arrived in Datong, 7 hours on a train west of Beijing near the Great Wall. Went on a day trip to the Yungang Caves and Hanging Temple. The Yungang caves are a set of Buddhist grottoes caved into the side of a sandstone cliff built around 400 AD. The Hanging Monastery (or named in Chinese "Temple Suspended in the Void") is anchored to the cliff walls with wooden beams set into the rock. The tour group got fed a selection of local dishes at lunch time, which were really good. Of course it was only AFTER we had finished that they informed us that one of the dishes, which tasted like really tender lamb, was really dog! Ah well, it was bound to happen sooner or later... Datong is quite a small town in China (only ... read more
