Asia » Singapore » Changi April 22nd 2006

Its 1am Singapore time and I am wandering around the airport in a daze. As far as airports go this aint a bad one, it has become like a second home for me as I have travelled through here 4 or 5 times now. Singapore is the half way mark of the flight from Australia but due to waiting time and time zone changes it will be 21 hours between boarding the Qantas domestic flight to Melbourne from Adelaide Airport to disembarking in Dubai. I asked the girl at the check in counter to put me with people I could talk to instead I got a family of Slovenes who couldnt speak english so spent the whole trip by myself, to top that off the movies they were showing I had already seen. Emirite airlines has ... read more

Enough about me. Happy Songkran! Songkran is the Thai Buddhist New Year, which was just celebrated this past week. Thais are fortunate enough to celebrate three New Years: Western, Chinese and Thai. According to the Thai Buddhist calendar, it is 2546! During the holiday, most Thai revelers returned to their home provinces so that Bangkok was the quietest it would be for a year, which was equivalent to DC on a weekend. But all over the country, including Bangkok, people battled it out a in an all out 4-day water war. Children, teenagers and adults alike threw buckets of water and sprayed water guns at one another, including random strangers. I suppose it’s not a bad way to beat the heat here. April is Thailand’s hottest month with high temperatures pushing between 100 and sometimes as ... read more

With our trip into Lhasa all arranged and departure dates set we had enough time to spend a day or so more in Dali and so headed up the hill to stay at the Higherland Inn. Taking the scenic (lazy) option, we caught the chairlift up to the Inn - but the view was spectacular and it was a nice gentle ride. The Higherland Inn was great - the staff were friendly, the blankets were warm, and the family dinners each evening were awesome. Our first afternoon we set off on a short walk - about 12kms altogether but mainly flat so not too bad. We walked around the mountain to the South via the Cloud Path to the Seven Dragon Pools - a beautiful waterfall which cascades over the rocks, leaving seven pools of icy ... read more

Went out to Roppongi last night. Roppongi by night is a 'must do' if you ever find yourself in Tokyo. Went with another English from the hostel and basically got really pissed. We bumped into an American who had just arrived and was looking for somewhere to stay the night, so we took him with us. We never found anywhere for him to stay in the end, so he is possibly still staggering round Roppongi, half-cut and homeless !! The last train back to the hostel is around 12, so we had to end the night there. Unfortunate, but it was that or stay out drinking until 5.30 when the Metro resumes service. It's tricky to make it back to the station without being lured into more bars and plied with drinks by the dodgy looking ... read more

It has been ages since we last wrote, i could say that it was becasue we have been so busy we haven't had time to think. But the truth of the matter is that we have done very little other than lie about on varioyus beaches in Goa and the thought of computer related activities was unpleasant but here we are... We spent 24 hours on a floating palace on the backwaters of Kerala, floating along like indian princesses being waited on hand and foot. Our day began at 10am when we boarded the boat, all day we languished watching life go by on the banks. Women washe their clothes, beating them on the steps, whilst children splashed about and men climbed coconut plams to collect toddy. Every so often the boat pulled into the bank ... read more

As you know, I am now in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province and hundreds of kilometers from the Dragon’s Backbone and the Longji Rice Terraces. Now, I could have gotten here the easy way, by going back south to Guilin and catching a train to Chengdu. It would have taken two days and would have been very easy. However, I decided to do it the hard way. The hard way, and you will need a very detailed map of China that includes lots of small towns in northern Guangxi and southern Guizhou provinces to follow along, to make my way to another railroad town, Guiyang. Anyway, I woke up early on the third day in Ping-An, and made my way down to the bus, which left at about 9 am. The bus headed to Longsheng, ... read more

There was only one working bulb in the center of the room. It wasn't too bad during the day but at night it felt like a prison cell. I went down to ask the owner if we could move one room over. She came up to confirm the lights were not working and said she'd send her husband up to fix it. (This is the way these things are run. It's a wife/husband team. He's the fix-it guy and she takes the money, just like in America.) Anyway it's about 8:00 p.m. and ... read more

The backpacker St that is a well padded landing zone for the jet lagged traveler. Is a real eye opener, about a k long, full of bars, restaurants, pad Thai & beer Chang vendors, clothes & souvenir shops, neon signs, hippy lookin expats, fresh fruit carts, travelers and backpacks all round. Welcome to Khoa San Rd, Bangkok! I landed in Bangkok 18hrs after i left Edinburgh, tired & keen to get to Khoa San & find a guest house.
