So after another taxi ride, surprise surprise, we arrive in Tangalle and we immediately see more effects of the tsunami, as well as the continuous temporary shelters by the coast and the Red Cross aid centers, it's quite easy to see boats simply where they shouldn't be - on land for example - I really cant imagine what it must have been like to have been here when the tsunami hit - absolutely shocking. Fortunately for us the hotel we arrived at which was nice enough also had a posh hotel across the road, the posh hotel however was designed and built in the seventies and made to look like a boat - it was so tacky you just had to love it - especially the pool with ocean views - all is forgiven... That night ... read more

I had had enough of the blistering heat of the desert and Delhi so where to go. Most locals go to the hill stations in the north at the foot of the Himalayan ranges. On the grape vine i heard that Darjeeling is nice and cool at this time of the year so off i went. i heard they have good tea too! As some of you out there may have gathered, jill had to return to work and hasnt been with me in India. I managed to pursuade a friend to come out and join me for a tea drinking week in the hills. The week was far removed from drinking tea all day. we took a 4 day trekking expedition up to the highest point in the region to get a great view of ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Vientiane April 21st 2006

A day probably isn't enough to truly appreciate Laos' capital, Vientiane, but that is all we spared for it. Due to our laziness on the beaches of Railay (Thailand) we've sadly left our time for Laos too short and already I'm feeling that this was a mistake. Laos is a wonderful country. Some people say that Vientiane is a dump and not worth spending much time at but I disagree. They say that the infrastructure is bad and the city not aesthetically pleasing enough but this is exactly what I like about it. It is the least capital city-like capital city I have ever seen. There are few paved roads though new paving is under construction. Most are dirt roads and the city is fairly undeveloped, though I saw a construction site for a shopping complex ... read more

No sooner than we had left Singapore we arrived in Bangkok, collected luggage and successfully avoided all the transport touts offering VIP rides and limousines. We took a ride with a very cheery guy driving a metered taxi into the city and arrived at around 10 pm at the KC guesthouse situated just off the back of the Khao San Road. Once checked in and settled it was decided it was best to leave the exploring until daylight and so a very welcome early night was had - even if the fan continually blew hot air around the room and the noise from the Tuk Tuks on the road outside made it virtually impossible to sleep! Inevitably, we were drawn directly to the Khao San Road in the following days for the unbelievable shopping. Our bags ... read more

Waaaay too many pictures taken the past few days. Three castles and a trip to Inari to ramble around the sacred mountain there. Lucky enough to snag some standing room only tickets to see the Dance of the Cherry Blossoms performed by Maiko (geishas in training) and then spent the rest of an afternoon walking along the Philosophers Path with all its greenery. The last night of the tour we headed for drinks at the Westin and then off to dinner followed by karaoke. Now here in Japan, karaoke is done in private - as in, you rent a room to accomodate your crew by the hour. They charge per person but drinks are unlimited....and it seems the whole objective is to make goood use of that unlimited bit within your purchased time. Note to self: ... read more
