Last night a dreamt I woke in the middle of the nightand went to the garden. the garden was dark and I could only make out grey shapes of plants and some thingsmoving amongst them. Slowly I began to notice tigers asleep in the garden....many tigers asleep ad some with cubs. and then there were lions too. I found my mother asleep mongst them all as I stepped over their fury bodies to cross the garden. Either they were giant lions and tigers or I had shrunk to the size of a fiveyear old child. as their bodies weredifficult to traverse. I watched their big chests rise and fall as my feet searched a small space between groin and belly to step. Perhaps I was sleep walking in my dream and if I was I was ... read more

While all you aussies were enjoying your easter weekend, gorging on chocolate, not working on friday and monday, holidaying at the beach and being rained out at oakbank or the clare races Marissa and I caught the shinkansen to a touristy town called Kamakura a couple of hours away for a Saturday trip. The sun was shining, the birds were singing the octopus was hot and the beach was cold. All in all what a lovely (and long) day!! Also a few random photos from driving around on Sunday ... read more

Asia » Japan » Shizuoka April 21st 2006

Have been checking out the surrounding area, the weather has been a lot nicer and everything is so green and pretty when the sun is out! In my area of Shizuoka it is mainly residential, with lots of green tea hedges on the surrounding mountains and vegie gardens that you see men and women tending. It is a quiet area, mostly families and older people so we feel quite safe walking home from tuition at night, and there are often people out walking until 10 ish at night, especially when the weather is nicer. Its quite nice to pass people in the street and wish them 'kombanwa' (good evening).... read more

The road to Sorsogon, the famed whaleshark hunters' paradise, is like a road to perdition particularly during holy week when traffic is a curse. It is a journey not for the faint-hearted- 500 km long from Manila. Traversing portions of Laguna, Batangas and Quezon, the largest province is an ordeal by itself. We have been doing this, for the past five years, partly as penance and partly to heighten the pleasure of seeing the whalesharks. This time however, we thought of dividing the trip as our tired bodies- aging as they are, badly needed a rest. We made a brief stopover in Bagasbas, Daet . This place is known for its big waves- a surfer's small paradise. I had been to the place two times before and up to now, I am still mesmerized by the ... read more

We left Mumbai for the culture rich state of Rajasthan and in the past week we've visited Jaipur, Jaisalmer, are now in Jodhpur (yes where the name of the riding trousers came from), and will be heading to Udaipur tomorrow afternoon. Jaipur, the state capital, borders the eastern reaches of the Great Thar Desert which stretches far westward into Pakistan. The desert consists of tiny tribal villages dotted about and every hundred miles or so are fortified cities which all have one aspect in common -a dramatic sandcastle-like fort perched atop a rocky hill jutting out of the barren flat landscape. Within these forts are meandering cobblestone streets, centuries old mansions called havelis with intricate stone lattice carvings, and tiny ancient houses. There is a timeless feel walking within these forts even despite the tourist ... read more

Hoian is a wonderful small town. It an old trading place that has the most French, Japanese and Chinese looking actitechure, all preserved under a UNESCO world heritage listing. With 200+ year old homes and shops, in which people still live, work and trade. The whole place is just so photographable. Another reason the town draws so many tourists, is for its craft. The ancestors of traders and craftspeople from all over Asia, India, as well as parts of Europe, created a concentration of the most fantastic food, clothing, woodwork, embroidery, pottery and so on. We couldn't resist sampling some of the talent, and had a few pieces of clothing made, and are now paying for it with the weight of our packs. The tayloring was unreal. They could complete our entire order of clothes in ... read more

The Rain forest This is the place where as you could imagine rains quite a bit and usually around the same time. The Rainforest is a thick lush green colour. This forest is believed to date back some 380 million years!!!! Pehaps older? There are indeed some very large trees, leeches and the noise is incredible. It is actually very very loud! You can here sounds from almost every species around. It was a little like Jurassic park. Bears, snakes, Tigers and so on could literally be anywhere. There is little tourism here and surprisingly most visitors that come here are actualy Germans from South Germany. Many from Munich so I have got the chance to improve my Bavarian style German.... read more

Asia » Japan April 21st 2006

This morning I slept in until 6:30am. It felt good. Surprisingly I didn't hear Dad snoring at all last night. I hope the same will be true tonight. We got moving around 8:30am or so to go to Shitennoji - the oldest Buddhist temple. We had to navigate through the subway (changing lines and everything) and we didn't get lost once! I feel like a master of the metro system :) The temple was tucked away off the main street and it took us a few wrong places to get there. One was into a Japanese cemetary - very serene and beautiful. The temple was okay -- exciting because it was the first temple I saw, but not too impressive. Most of it looked restored, except for a portion in the back that looked incredibly old. ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » South Central Coast » Quảng Nam » Hoi An April 21st 2006

Hoi An was my next step further south. Most of the people from the Hue boat trip headed south the same day I did. Since the buses dropped us off at the same place, we were all able to meet up. At Sam's recommendation, we headed over to a new hotel that had just opened up. The place was fantastic, close to the old market, and even had a pool. The pool was great for those sweltering Hoi An afternoons. Many scenes from "The Quiet American" (including the opium den scenes) were filmed in Hoi An. The city has Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese and French architecture and was a great place to spend a few days wandering around. There are some really nice historic houses. Many are in great shape, despite the flooding that often occurs during ... read more
